Here's a tip from a relatively consistent winner: you need to use your map. First second of the game, pick a house with a high concentration of candies. Go toward the edges, the usual players go for the nearest houses. To avoid dry spells, check the map for the highest concentration area once your first house is cleaned. It's much more effective to run across the map for a full house than to dig around for well-hidden ones in a picked-through nearby building. Like you said, the roofs are quite handy, and so are the basements, as few people find them. And whatever you do, stay away from other players. You're better off going to any other concentration than fighting for one house and getting half (or less) candies. I hope this helps!
