The legendary 'handshake interrupt' induction... There seems to be much interest in this in the worlds of Hypnosis (Hypnotism) and NLP, but what many people don't realise is that what is most often shown as Milton Erickson's handshake interrupt, is actually NLP co-founder Richard Bandler's version (Derren Brown often uses a variation on the Bandler version, that is a little more abrupt than the handlings shown here). In addition to that, almost nobody realises that Hypnosis Legend Dave Elman also had a handshake induction all of his own!
Develop Hypnotic Mastery: www.hypnosiswit...
This video discusses the difference between the three, and also demonstrates the handling for the Erickson and Bandler versions.
Note: hypnosis is NOT mind control - it is the subtle utilisation of psychological and cognitive factors. Influence but not control.
This clip is taken from the forthcoming Rapid Induction Rituals Home Study video set: www.hypnosiswit...

Enjoyed the inductions. There are a number of different Erickson handshake inductions I've heard him describe or seen him demonstrate - 1. Ambiguous touch induction - going in for the handshake then ambiguously releasing whilst talking (and gazing through) with the subject as he slowly taps the hand with his fingers and releases the hand so gently the client doesn't notice the point he has let go and their arm is cataleptic. 2. Arm catalepsy version where he introduces himself, normally a little way into the interaction as if it is an afterthought of something he forgot to do, as the hands are about to meet he takes the hand gently with the other hand and ignores the handshake so that the subject ignores the handshake, and slides his hand out gently. I love the video where he does this to a volunteer subject, asks her if she is hypnotised, she responds with 'I don't think so, I don't feel hypnotised', he replies saying her words back to her, and then follows up with 'so do you normally keep your arm up in the air like that' and then directs her attention to her arm and notices following the handshake it is still in the air. I've known some sales people who like this specific version. 3. In a paper Erickson wrote about pattern interrupt inductions he described a man heckling from the audience about hypnosis is all rubbish and how Erickson couldn't hypnotise him. Erickson agrees and gradually encourages the man to come up on stage to 'prove it'. As the man paces across the stage towards Erickson, he paces towards the man, puts his arm out as if to shake hands, the man does the same, just as the hands are about to meet Erickson drops to one knee quickly not completing the handshake, looks up at the man and says 'that's right, and you can continue going all the way deeply and comfortably into hypnosis' (or a similar sentence, I'm not reading the article at this moment) and the man drops deeply into hypnosis standing there on stage. His main use for the induction outside of demonstrations was with 'resistant' clients where he would 'try' to do the therapy, would fail, would then see them out of his office, at this point they would assume he has failed and therapy is over, just as they left his office he would say 'thank you for coming in' and put his arm out, do a handshake induction, before walking them back into his office and doing the therapy now he has got their resistance out the way... There are more descriptions in his dozens of hours of video footage, audio lectures and thousands of pages of articles etc, but these are probably the main ones. I like them (mainly for demonstrations) because they are very quick and not as 'shocking' as other rapid inductions...

I appreciate how you teach that the handshake interrupt does not have to be a shock induction and needs to be pre-framed to be most effective. Most importantly, it can be done in a gentle way. Well done, James!

I think it is imortant to share: 1 ) In general don't get into hypnotizing friends and family. Not that it can't be done but unless you are confident and capable you are much better off working with other budding hypnotist. 2) There are many depths of trances. Don't be intimidated by the concept of inducing a trance. People are in various levels of trance all day long. Explain to potential subjects that they are in a trance when watching a movie, reading a good book etc. The challenge is in the next step: deepening the level. All hypnosis is SELF HYPNOSIS. Things is HUGE. If you are really interested start with self hypnosis so you know what you are trying to accomplish with another person. Next , join a group or attend a seminar so you can practice on other willing, serious individuals with similar goals. Bottom line: All hypnosis is self hypnosis. We all go in and out of trances continuously. Not the Dracula movie myth.... I do this professionally and assure you it isn't Rocket Science but it definetly requires practice of what you learn and the confidence to instruct others. Hope this helps!

I learned the technique from Bandler and Grinder. Helped a friend in Santa Fe win $24.000 on a slot machine at a casino about 15 miles from Santa Fe. When I was going thru NLP TRAINING 34 years ago, one of the doctors from a very famous college brought six MD'S from the college, they were lined up, I went to each one did the induction, they asked when is it going to happen, I said try to lower your arm, they couldn't, then I walked over and touched each one's arm and they were able to so. To make a long story short, IT WORKS,

Hi Stoney. I think I mentioned in the vid that this kind of thing tends to work best in situations where the pre-framing is taken care of, like seminars etc, and that it is less useful 'impromptu'. That said, it is not the 'induction' that hypnotises, it is the hypnotist! Also, remember, hypnosis is NOT mind control, it is an influence art and it is imperfect (this is why stage hypnotists are stage hypnotists and not world leaders or super villains... or both :-) )

In my opinion, you shouldn't even use the name Erickson when discussing these induction methods. There was absolutely nothing shown here even close to Erickson's technique. Saying that his was "a little subtler" is a ridiculous understatement. It was supremely subtle and complex -- on a totally different level. No one these days has the time or inclination to learn about it, let alone do it. It is true that he didn't lift the hand and direct the subject's gaze to it, though. That much you got right.

@StephanieConkle
@StephanieConkle 9 жыл бұрын
+CR Green I have studied Erickson's handshake induction from his own words in his books and videos. And even though he uses breadth of trance instead of depth of trance, you can certainly learn it in an afternoon. The basis of what he does is to intentionally make the subject uncomfortable with the handshake, so as to confuse him. It is a pattern interrupt but Erickson is relying on the subject's confusion of it, and not on bypassing the CF like Bandler. For instance, Erickson would begin shaking hands with his patient and at the point he where it would be socially acceptable to let go, he hangs on and doesn't let go until he induces that feeling of awkwardness, then he slides in his commands at that point. Erickson was a master of confusion and used it in every technique he did. I've added a lot more confusion in my practice since learning this. I had been taught to use confusion sparingly, only to come to find out I wasn't using it nearly enough.

Your "what not to do" is actually the closest to how Bandler does it, just a hint less abrupt and as he holds your wrist with two fingers he points to a point on your palm and says "look here" - as your palm gets closer to your eyes he plays on you losing focus and tells you to close them as your hand drops.
@TheTrippnotist

Heracles Sakalis Very possibly. Bandler has been a driving force in the creation of so much of that is of value Changework/hypnosis-wise. But there is a lot about his facilitation style that is, in my view, not so great. maybe it’s just a matter of taste!

James Tripp - Chaos Wave I'm not judging good or bad, I've seen Bandler do it and I just thought funnily enough, it's not quite as abrupt as your (slightly exaggerated) "how not to do it", but that's the closest one in this video. He comes around close to the subject's left shoulder and points at a point on their right palm, holding the right wrist with two fingers in an Aikido like grip.

people respond to confidence. If you look "afraid" then the person will pick up on it. Stand up straight, look like you do this all the time, stay out of your own head (pay attention to your subject, not your internal voice/doubts) and do some of those ambiguous touches, like James does, and they will just assume you are in full control of the situation and will respond. One tip is to say about how well they are doing eg "Your doing very well at relaxing even deeper now" (never mind the bad grammar, it's confusional and commanding.

K so i tried the one where you bring the palm of their hand close to their face and you pull it out and forward till it touches their head and i think it worked on my brother--i did not tell him what i was attempting to do but when i had his hand close to his face he was laughing but as i was pushing his hand out and in he slowly stopped laughing (which is rare because once he laughs at these sorts of things--he doesnt stop) but he stopped laughing and i said "Sleep" and he literally collapsed to the floor without giggling or anything and i said "oh shit wtf" and then i told him "okay listen to me, wake up" and he woke up, i just don't know if it was real or not, i asked him if he was acting and he said no he first felt "Dizzy" and then he felt like he was "Power out" (Hes 10 years old) so idk what to believe, anyone have ideas or so.?

My biggest fear is that when I say "sleep" that they will not fall in trance and than it will be very awkward.

Ive been doing magic tricks (mostly card magic) to show friends in school. Id really like getting into hypnosis and i was just wondering if the handshake induction is a good place to start. Its pretty much exactly the type of thing ive been looking for and this video was very clear. Is it possible to do this induction just by watching this video or do i need to start somewhere else? thx in advance for anyone who would respond

+UbererSK It is possible to do this just from copying it, and you may get a result. I recommend watching my 'How To Hypnotise Without Trance' series here on KZbin to get a bead on some subtleties that will help you with hypnotising in general.

Should i tell my friend im going to attempt to put them in a trance before doing it, or just ask them to shake hands to try a magic trick? Is it hard to make them sleep while standing up? Will they stay standing or drop to the floor?

Hi! Great video! I have a question. I am trying to learn how to hypnotise people using this "hand shake induction" method. However I do not understand how do I know if the person has actually been hypnotised when I do it? I tried it on a friend. I told him I was gonna hypnotise him, and when i said sleep, he closed his eyes. Buy how do I know if he actually got hypnotised or if he was just closing his because that seemed like the right thing to do when I said "sleep". Thank you!

I have no experience in hypnosis whatsoever, could I do this to a friend? The richard bandler pattern interrupt without practise? Or would I need to practise? If so, how?

How much of his trance is social pressure? Or is a foil?

Social pressure? Not much in this instance. A foil, absolutely not. Buying into a reality? huge factor.

Personally, I don't make much use of it at all, but then I don't use inductions (at least by my definition) full stop. In my view, inductions (especially 'rapid' inductions) best serve as ritual forms of communication - it's the meaning that gets attached to them that matters (like placebo - the effect isn't in the sugar pill but in the meaning attached to the receiving and taking of the pill - that meaning shapes expectancy). Whilst I have undoubtedly nuanced my views since back then, here is an old video (2012) that roughly outlines them: kzbin.info/www/bejne/j6a7qGaFnNB9ftU
