5w-30 for winter is the way to go ;) KIA Cerato 2005 with 1.5 CRDi cranks up @ -25 like in summer.

Who ever told you that cycling the power will help you has no idea about how modern diesel engines work. Basically what you are doing is heating the glow-plugs, then letting them cool down by turning the power off, and then heating them back again. In short- you are draining your battery pointlessly. Once you turn the power on, glow plugs will heat up to required temperature and engine is ready to start up, and glow-plugs will still work even after the indicator is off. So, friendly advice - just wait until the indicator light is off and start cranking. Engine will start in 10-15s. (Don't worry about overheating the starter motor, if it's cold outside, it's cool too).

yep indeed if u turn the key once then its warmed right so yeah in minus twenty it l likely weaken the batt

10w40 yağ çok kalın. 5w40 yada 5w30 kolay çalişma sağlar

I had my opportunity to test this engine in -20°c (at 245.000) and this seems to take way too long. This car needs a new battery, so the rpm under cranking is higher. And 10W-40 is not exactly the best choice in the summer, let alone in harsh winter. Put in 5W-40 next time.

Why would you use 10w40 oil when it's -20C outside ? For that temperature i would use at least 5w-30, highly recommended 0w-30, what i use on my 1.6 CRDi.

Yeah, but oils and times have evolved. You can safely use 5w-30/5w-40 oils even on older diesels. 10w weight is pointless.

Have you found out what was the problem for such a long start? Last year at -22 my i30 CRDI started smooth and nicely, but today at -12 I had almost the same problem, I just pushed the accelerator pedal at the second attempt to start engine and seems it helped - on that attempt I got the same result as you on 2:25. Some people say that the glow plugs might be worn out and need replacement...

I just had my i30 serviced 3 times due to cold start issues. First they changed the plugs (3/4 were dead). Didn't fix it, tho. Then they replaced the battery (it was about to die as well, discharged itself within 24 hours after being removed). Still didn't fix it. Then I took it to another place, they immediately discovered it had a faulty engine thermostat. It was stuck so that it couldn't detect temperatures below 20C and obviously it's way different to start a diesel at 20C than what it is to start it at -6. Today the car started much smoother (+1C) so hopefully that was it and it's good to go for the next 92k km...
