6:44 The POIs for highway stopping areas got a major glow-up in the September software update. Before, every single stopping area had an icon of a big “R”, no matter what kind of stopping area it was. Now, the icon communicates clearly exactly what kind of stopping area it is: Scenic overlooks with no amenities get an S icon. Rest Areas with minimal amenities (just bathrooms and vending machines, no fuel, shops or dining) get an R icon. Service Plazas get an icon that lets you know at a glance if it has restrooms, dining or fuel, all in a single P icon. It’s surprisingly useful to be able to see at a glance what amenities the upcoming stopping area has.

I took a trip and pre-planned my stops at particular locations. Stopped on the way at 50% and charged to 90%, arrived at destination at 30%, stayed at my destination for a few days, charged to 80% for the return trip, stopped at 40%, charged to 80%, and made it home with 20%. EZPZ, no anxiety, no problem since I'd rather take a little more time and arrive with a little extra in the pack rather than needing to look for a charger because I didn't want to wait literally 3-5 more minutes for the charging session.

I totally agree. I used it a couple weeks ago on a drive from New Mexico to Oregon and it worked just as great as you described. You HAVE to limit it to chargers >50kW because it insisted on stopping at a Level 2 charger, which obviously doesn't make any sense. Also, I would argue that it is actually better with road closures and the like than Google Maps. I had it happen TWICE this year that it knew about major road closures that caused me major diversions that Google didn't display and routed me right through, which was a huge pain. On the second occasion I started listening to the built-in navigation and it saved me a major headache! So yes, little things here and there as you said, but other than that it is working very good!

Google only lets me know I am going to be stuck after I am already stuck! ROFL It is kind of funny that I have an old stand alone GPS with road data that gives me status better about delays ahead on the planned route than any of the in car stuff I have now. If they have that data which I am sure they do then they aren't displaying it.

We are new to EV's , both my wife and I have EV6 GT-lines. We don't have anything to compare it to in regard to route planning or EV car in general since these are our first ones we've owned. Recently we've taken several long-distance trips from Bucks County PA to Gatlinburg Tn. Bar Harbor Maine and Williamsburg Virginia. On each trip we used the in car route planner and found it very decent .We did have to learn on the way how to use it and eventually we felt more at ease with the system. But like you said there is room for improvement .

I like how the charging planning works. It seems to calculate an even distribution of charging across all the charging stops I add to my route. With some aritmetic in my head, I can decide how much charge I’ll have at the end of my trip if I skip a charging stop. One big improvement I’d like is more transparency on when the battery conditioning will turn on, like as status message that says, “Battery conditioning will start 35 minutes / 30 miles before next charging stop”. As it is now, I don’t know if I didn’t program the route correctly for battery conditioning, or of the car is intentionally delaying battery conditioning because it’s not needed yet.
@arniesea

I agree on the not getting the most out of the battery pack. I have road tripped several times with my 2023 I5 SEL. One problem with your advice to just blow by the "near" charge stop you don't want and let it recalculate is that the NAV system will be using preconditioning unnecessarily for the stops you don't use. It is a PIA but I pull over and go through the route deleting the stops I don't want. Then I have to say "no" to it recalculating the route as it will put them back in. Very frustrating. Again, I would prefer to just manually start preconditioning myself. And yes, it won't precondition the battery if it is below 15% or 10% SOC. (Depending on outside temps.) I do appreciate the rest-stop feature for when I am traveling with my and / or dog. When solo driving, my charging stop are about the same distance as my bio needs. ;-)

If you start the other mapping appl first, like waze that appl will continue to run in the background while you are using the build in navigation system. And you can briefly switch to the waze appl. If you stay in the other appl too long the car navigation system will pause your route. The build in system does provide a button at the bottom of the screen to resume the car routeing, when you press that button the car will recompute the original route.

Man that comment about ABRP… spot on. I used it for a trip to Phoenix from Denver, and I LOVED being able to customize the arrival SOC, and being able to connect to my OBD…but it would constantly suggest “alternate routes” that would be +20/ +30 min - I even saw one that was + 2 hours! Who ever wants that? It’s frustrating how all these different options have different benefits. Built in navigation gives you auto pre conditioning, ABRP lets you customize arrival SOC (even suggests limiting speed when pushing the battery)… why can’t we just have it in ONE place. Maybe someday 🤷‍♂️
@Tazdeviloo7

Cars need an API that the apps like ABRP and Google maps can use for preconditioning. Ford and Apple did something like that where Apple Maps will plan the charge stops and precondition.

I know you know this but it isn’t anxiety about no chargers available, it’s just the wait and delay involved. I just did a minor road trip this weekend probably in a worst case scenario (drove from MA to North Conway NH) and I’m not sure what happened but they got rid of the electrify America stations that were in North Conway and there really are no fast chargers anywhere around there. Ended up with lots of extra time to detour and charge and I would have rather taken a gas car for this trip

I started trying the onboard navigation recently on my '24 Limited and came to the same conclusion - it's quite reasonable and I also like some of the UI features better than carplay and Apple maps. With my wireless Carplay adapter, I'm able to run car CarPlay and an Apple maps route in parallel no problem, and I verified that preconditioning starts up as it should. Everything I've read says that shouldn't work but it does.
@TrueLink00
@TrueLink00 Ай бұрын
The problems with the built-in navigation are not with the EV functions. The preconditioning has always worked well for me as long as I’m not dropping below 20% state of charge. And if your efficiency isn’t as good as expected, it’ll automatically adjust charging stop planning accordingly and notify the driver. However, where it does fail is regular navigation. Off highways its routing is atrocious and occasionally dangerous. I’ve seen it take unusual routes, demand I go the wrong way on traffic circles, and take me to the wrong locations. When it reads out turns, it is using a different catalog of names than what’s shown on the map. The names it uses appear to come from scanning street view images in Google maps. So instead saying “turn right on Fulton Rd,” it’ll say “turn right at hospital.” It says this if there is a sign somewhere pointing to the general direction of the nearest hospital (miles away). Or instead of “turn left onto Highland drive” I’ll get “turn left at Erie, PA” because there is a sign saying that that is the direction to get to a highway that eventually reaches Erie, Pennsylvania after 100 miles and a state crossing. Another example is it telling me to take exists 19 when there are multiple exists on mile 19. Which is it? 19A or 19B? All of this is a real shame because I WANT to use the built-in navigation. I want driving directions in my HUD. I want preconditioning when going to charge. I want my range to calculate considering my route (something that happens with onboard nav). But unless they can get regular navigation to work, it’s a non-starter outside of simpler road trip routes.

Ever since I took delivery, I've thought that my Ioniq 5's navigation system is pretty good. The only time it irritated me was driving from Placerville, CA, to Bridgeport, CA. The system "insisted" that I stop to plug in at a ChargePoint station in Garderville -so I did. However, when I arrived at Bridgeport, it was clear that I could've arrived without making that stop. Tsk. On the other hand, I have had the system deviate from my intended route, and I trusted it, but later learned that it knew there was construction that it helped me avoid. Good job!

a little hello from France. it is true that the hyundai planner does not seem the most modern. But it works pretty well. It has the advantage of being connected to practically everything. He saved me from problems more than once. I use it very often. because I make two trips of more than 500 km each month. This summer I was surprised to find that there had been an update on the charge percentage calculations in the night just before I left on vacation 700 km away: I entered the destination and then I noticed that the calculations charging times are very different from the day before. the load amplitudes are different with lower values and the same for higher values. I decided to follow him. Everything went very well. It saved me from a big blockage due to an accident and on the way back a load that became impossible. because the station was completely blocked by VTs. because there were fuel shortages at the other stations before and after. For me it will be enough to be able to define the percentage of charge on arrival and at the station just like the world of terminals expected. So that it is very good.

Overall, the built-in navigation solution is great, but I really wish the charging provider filter would also work for route planning. It seems like the filter only applies to chargers nearby, not along the planned route. Hmmm. Just finished a road trip to MN (from Colorado) in my 22 ioniq 5. Definitely used the car navigation for the pre-conditioning (around 10-15 F most of the time outside). I’ve used it numerous times for pre-conditioning reasons, but I found myself constantly battling it. Some sampling: (1) It would choose chargers that were suboptimal (slow or poor ratings), and not let me adjust, (2) It would find chargers then forget they exist and then find them again in a 30 minute span (3) It would ignore the directest route even when I was on it (this seems to be more true off interstate) (4) It could not figure out how to precondition early enough. I actually used the conservative tendencies to my advantage here. I would let it precondition for an earlier stop so that I could have a better battery temperature for my intended stop. All in all, I just feel as though it doesn’t allow enough user intervention.

Very largely agree! I drove 8500km across Europe in September/October - and it worked flawlessly throughout! Very much agree with most of your criticisms, and probably another reason for the conservative early charge stops is in case you miss it. I missed a stop going down south on my way down there (Sometimes along the highway in Europe they are placed in strange locations on the rest areas, so woopsie) and was very happy that I had more than enough to just go to the next one along the way. Speaking of combining google maps and the built in, turns out you actually can have both running. You just need to start them in the right order, which is still stupid but doable - I didn't bother on my trip though. - this might work with Waze as well, but Waze is pretty lackluster in Europe, so I can't really say for sure

Thanks for your experience with this. You've convinced me that I won't be trading in my 2022 Ioniq5 until the infotainment system is converted to the Google tech. I thought that with NACS, a preconditioning button, and a rear wiper I would pull the trigger. But the lack of up to date charging stations is still a deal breaker for me. I'm still using our Model Y for road trips. Going to a charging location with 24 chargers and knowing on route how many chargers are free and preconditioning even at 7%, it's a much better experience... except for the extra stops because I don't want to charge past 50% because of the charging curve.

My three issues with the built in your planning is that a lot of local roads it doesn't show a speed limit (Google maps does), the timing of announcements for turns is poorly timed (sometimes too early and sometimes too late enough to miss a turn or turn into the wrong road), and the exits that it announced are not necessarily what is on the road signs (I was in the DC area and the planner told me the road I was going into by name but that road name did not appear anywhere in the exit signs).

Agreed - the possibility of having battery-conditioning below 20% is a must - especially since it is in winter time it is needed and also here the efficiency is the worst. The conservertive planning is for me easier to work around since you can just ignore the charging station and drive past it. Agreed, then you could waste electricity on preconditioning. But that can be turned off quite easily.

That was my hang up using other routing is having to on the fly manually input the station so you can get conditioning. Unless they allow the button like they have in the EV9 I’d use the Kia route planning but I was on a trip and I just wasn’t sure I was going to make the next charger. Seems like it was calculating the arrival charge % right and when your temps are getting into the negatives I don’t want to lose charge on the side of the road in the winter. In those situations I’d much rather them under estimate. There’s just not enough charging stations online yet in rural America to chance it. Large gaps between fast chargers maybe when Jan 15th rolls around I may try again.

My understanding is that for Li-ion batterys its best not go below 20% (for longer battery life). For most li-ion battery manufactorers, the battery will charge faster with low SOC, and will charger slower as the SOC on increases. (So 1 hour of charging starting with initial at SOC of 20% will add more miles than 1 hour of charging starting at 50% SOC. The ABRP app allows you to set how low of SOC you are willing for the battery to go to. ABRP gives you 3 choices in planning stops - mininum number if stops, minimize time charging and short but many stops.

I haven't understood what all the complaints were about. In the almost year I've had my Ioniq 5 here in the Bay Area, I've gone on 3 longer trips, 2 1500 mile trips to the PNW and one 800 mile trip to LA. I just put my destinations into the built in route planner and had no difficulties. I did keep the EA app open on my phone so I could see how busy upcoming stations were, because I didn't see that the route planner was getting current information. I'm not trying to do a trip out of spec style, so I just looked ahead on the EA app to see what was available and sometimes skipped a stop that the car was proposing because there were at least 2 more EA stations in range. I do have ABRP, but I don't much care for its interface, and to be really useful (live data updates), I would have to subscribe.

I just got a JD Power survey about my 2023 IONIQ 5 and gave them a good review, but slammed the route planning. Recently, I signed up for Auto Charge+ via EV Go and wanted to try it out at a fairly new install at a Flying J. It had no clue this charging station existed and would not pre-condition. It wasn’t a huge deal because I was merely testing (yes, Auto Charge did work) and had time to spare. However, this particular stretch of highway is a charging desert and this cool drink was desperately needed in the area. Unfortunately, users of Hyundai’s system would simply be passing it by. Oh, and the built in system wanted me to turn around and charge near home as it saw no places for me to stop on the way to the destination I put in. It was driving me nuts bugging me to turn around, so I shut it off. On a summer road trip, I used Google Maps and planned my charges with Chargeway. I’d love to have that manual pre-conditioning option come to my 2023, but I fear the software is too old for them to implement this function. Please ask them the next time you get the chance. Thanks!

This is like an additional 7% in my EV6 GT. I have pushed it a 2% BMS before but never again. I won't go over 0% anymore in any car. Don't trust your BMS. 😊

I’ve used the built in route planning in my EV6 quite a few times and don’t mind it overall. I always find myself looking at the wrong line

The rerouting to a different station can be double edged, mine decided I was drawing too much power while conditioning to arrive above 20% so it wanted me to stop at an earlier exit... to use a 6kW L2 charger for 14hours. Oh and it turned off the conditioning so when I did reach my stop with ~15% I was treated to slow and cold charging.

I did notice on my last road trip a couple months ago that the estimated SoC numbers on the route are actually pretty good! They're even a little bit conservative, which is nice. The nav UX is clunky, but my on major complaint is preconditioning is a huge pain. Having it not work correctly can end up wasting a ton of time with slow charging.

I find in uk and Europe that the built in navigation works better than google (except I would like the satellite map view). It provides the lane info and re-routes for incidents quicker than google. Also no problem running google maps or ABRP and built in at the same time just start built in first it first then start the car play app then resume the built-in. That has worked since 2022 when I used it to do a 4000 miles trip, you can have the built-in running in the side window.

Using the phone is not a distraction at all.

I just got this magsafe phone holder for my EV6 a couple of months ago and I don't know why I waited this long. It's a suction cup type and I placed it right above the shifter in front of the heated seat and steering wheel buttons. It's so nice to run the EA app before getting there to see the status. Having a phone like my Pixel Fold and Z Fold 6 provides me with really a large second screen. It really doesn't interfere with anything else that I would need in the car as well. I could always rotate it sideway if it does. It's the perfect fit really. 😊 I recently did a long 1,500 mile trip and was running a similar setup. I mainly use ABRP just for planning but but so much for routing. I also have an Android box so pretty much I could use it on screen for routing without premium. 😊 I usually use Google Maps for routing though. So on the top it would be Google Maps split with my music. On my phone it would be up to two apps at once like EA and something else.

I just went in and tried route planning in the EV6 again and I got to say it’s still leaves a lot to be desired my BIG issues are still: 1) I can not find a way to turn of auto route start very annoying 2) no option to set limits of how much you want to charge the one I tested it set up where you’d have to charge to 100% each time you stop 3) if you add charge stops it removes the others so instead of adjusting the SoC at each stop it just removes them. 4) once you edit your route to add a stop it won’t let you edit again 5)when looking to add a stop you can filter charging stations At this time ABRP is far superior with the options however as you’ve pointed out there is no way to manual start battery conditioning. Until they get better rout planing and adjustments I will continue to rent a gas car for trips. This is not because you can’t do it in an EV it’s more so why would I put wear and tear in my personal owned car and the route planning is still lacking. Kia’s apps do not have all the stations I know are available but ABRP does. The route planner IS still very bad in the Kia cars. Honestly it’s number one flaw and it’s a big one I warn others about.

Reading between the lines it sounds like Hyundai is not happy with TomTom which is their base map provider today. You're likely right on the nose that Google Map data will allow for better/faster updates to the nav system. I'm guessing they had to do an internal pivot which is why the current nav updates have been less frequent and slow to release. Second, I listen to Pandora which requires AA. When I run AA, Google Maps comes along as a primary app and won’t go away. Any voice commands given to the NAV are intercepted by Google Maps.

It does work fine for the most part unless you know exactly which charging locations you want to stop at. I do wish they'd make it easier to define those stops or to just navigate directly to a charger that's more than 20 miles away. I've found out if you try to navigate to a charger any other way than from the list of charging stations directly, either by searching for a POI or by using the MyHyundai app and sending it to the car, it won't activate pre-conditioning. The only way I can navigate directly to specific long distance chargers is to set my destination to something nearby and then add a stop and then look for chargers near the destination and then re-route to that added stop.

I agree. I did one or two write-ups on the Ioniq forum about my likes & dislikes on the NAV. The interface is way better than Google Maps, especially when driving east. Why does Google put me at the right edge of the map and leave over 3/4 of the map behind my current position? What's so important about where I've been? I want to see where I'm going. Someone else already pointed out that you can use other apps at the same time as the native nav and toggle back & forth quite a bit. I did that a lot on our last trip. I had to resume the route each time I switched, but that just took a second. The two main drawbacks I see are, as you said, outdated data (It got totally lost due to a new road in Austin, TX.) and the car's insistence that I get to my chosen charger with 30% SOC. And there's no way to make it stop nagging and trying to steer me off my chosen route. Fix those two things and it would be outstanding.

I tried this tonight myself while doing a longer drive but I hadn’t read this first so I didn’t try muting guidance on Waze or Google maps… however, I can confirm that split screen works as long as you don’t start the route guidance on either Waze / Google Maps / Apple Maps (tried all three). You can use the search functionality to check your route for traffic and you can run Waze with sound enabled for enroute warnings, you just can’t start the actual route guidance itself - the moment the route guidance is started it cancels the in car navigation system route guidance which in turn stops battery preconditioning.
