I have one correction. I live a about 2 miles from an EA DC fast charger. I can tell the car to navigate there and it will start to precondition. Obviously 2 miles isnt enough to warm it up, but I can go inside and eat breakfast or whatever and then hop in 20 minutes later. Specially since I can leave the garage door closed and not worry about fumes 😁

I can confirm this. I forgot to use the onboard nav this morning until a couple miles from a charger, and noticed that it activated conditioning. Still didn’t do much due to limited time, but better than nothing.

I live in Canada and based on my last winter experiences, preconditioning can start at more than 60 miles of the destination charger when the temperature is below -15 or -20 Celsius. At such temperature, on the highway, it’s very long to wam up the battery. Because of that I « cheat » and I often target in the navigation system a charging station 15 or 20 miles before the charging station where I really want to stop. If I don’t do that, the coldest cells won’t be at 21 Celsius. The algorithm is probably not conceived to manage such very cold temp.

Regarding cabin heating / cooling while charging at home: I use the scheduled charging function under the EV screen to both schedule the charge session and the climate system when traveling on a road trip. It is based on departure time so I can set it for the date of my road trip, change the AC change setting to 100% and have the car both fully charged and comfortable when I leave. The 100% charge allows me to go further on the first leg of my trip without using the battery to make the cabin comfortable.

Wish I would have seen this before a test trip yesterday. A DCFC just came online and I wanted to check it out. The charger is an Electrify America rated at 350 kw and is located about 100 miles away. The ambient temperature was around 40F. I noted the pack temperature decreasing during the drive and was around 45F when I arrived at the charger. Charging speed was initially 50 kw and rose to 130 kw once the pack got to some higher temperature with the heaters raising the pack temperatue. So much to learn with these cars.

Also - it’s not just that you need to be above 20% to activate - it will turn off below as well. Mine turned off at 19% - 10 miles out from charger. At least my experience on a recent trip where I was stretching to a new and so likely fast EA charger in fairly low temps. I didn’t lose tons of heat but I definitely arrived with not a fully warmed battery. Better than without.

Thanks for the fantastic video, which is extremely useful... as always. I got the Battery Conditioning update done for my 2022 AWD Ioniq 5 at my dealership in Nov 23 thanks to your info. The main reason I wanted it was for the side-effect of allowing cabin pre-heating to be successful even when the battery was at its maximum level as set and the car plugged in. I live in Norway, and it was really frustrating not to have the car cabin pre-heated on icy mornings because the battery was already full (to its 80% preset limit) and the heater was thus inactivated. When I got the car back after its BC update, then I was so delighted to see that the cabin heating worked flawlessly even when it was plugged in and the battery was at max. A real success, thanks to The Ioniq Guy... But... A couple of weeks later, an OTA software update was implemented. Since then, 2 strange things happened. 1. I was on a long drive in freezing conditions. I stopped at a beautiful scenic viewpoint overlooking one of the most beautiful fjords in Norway. When I restarted the car, it wouldn't go into gear to drive. I struggled like that for about 30 min. I got out of the car, locked it, waited 10 min, unlocked it and tried again. Still, it wouldn't go into gear... I noticed that an immobiliser dashboard icon was lit, and also that the battery conditioning icon was on (the battery was below 40% as far as I can remember). As a last ditch attempt before calling a rescue truck, I went into settings and deactivated the battery conditioning setting. Then, I restarted the car, and... Hey Presto! it went into gear and I could drive off. Total relief 😌 2. The next time that I charged the car, I noticed that the cabin pre-heating was behaving as before the update, in that it turns on but then turns off again within 30 sec if the battery is at its max set level (80% for me normally). Obviously, I'm pretty disappointed that I thought the issue was fixed but now it's back again, and I have to do the silly work around of increasing the max battery level before I start cabin heating when the car is plugged in. And the whole immobiliser thing was rather scary and disconcerting. Have you heard of anyone else having a similar situation of the heating limitation apparently being resolved but then returning to the previous factory setting? Sorry for this long-winded comment! And thanks again for your fantastic channel! Cheers Charlie

I have a question and an observation: if I am going on a longer drive, does it increase the effeciency of the battery if I use battery preconditioning--not to charge, but to increase battery effeciency? 2. Is it crazy that when we precondition the cabin the seats don't warm up? It is frigid cold and I get in and even w/ the heat and stering will warming, the seat is like ice🙄

Also is there a way while driving to enter a charger that is more that about 30 miles away as a waypoint. I just did a road trip where I wanted to add one but the nav system would only show me nearby chargers and I had to wait till I got closer to add it so that I would get preconditioning.

I just bought a used 58kwh '21 which should have gotten the update for preconditioning in June but it didn't work. My hyundai dealer was actually not sure my car had the battery heater installed since not all german registered cars do, which would be a bummer since all here in Denmark do. But they also said that maybe the update had been done in the wrong order, so they would do the updates again and behold now it works although it never shows in the instrument cluster, but I can see that when a charging station has been entered in the navigation the energy consumption for battery management goes up to 4+kw and it charges much faster now.

Hi, I know an old thread. I have a Ioniq5 purchased in 2023 March (Australia) 77kw version. I don't have the option appear at all. Could this be because I'm on an older version or because of Australia they don't send them with the heaters?
@StormKleist
@StormKleist 17 күн бұрын
@@SeanInnes-d9t Good question. Best way to find out is starting navigation for an ev-charger and see if it starts using around 4kw for battery management. It takes 1-2 minutes to begin after navigation has started. Also it needs to be cold enough, there must be more than 20% on the battery and the chosen charger must be far enough away from your current location. It takes up to 50 minutes to preheat the battery if it's very cold.

I just put in a 350 EA charger that's about 30 minutes away. Effectively an ON switch. For Nav I always use Google Maps anyway. Of course it's annoying that I can't do that through AA while using the on-board Nav for pre-conditioning. Car will precon until I reach charger or batt temp is optimized

Question that I have seen no one answer (and I have not taken a road trip yet after knowing about the severely dorky way to precondtion to try this): I live and take road trips in nice, warm California. Does preconditioning cool the battery if it is above optimal temps? Or is this whole dance only useful for cold batteries in places with this thing called "winter"? My sense is that this only is useful for batteries colder than optimal, but haven't seen anyone confirm.

It the car is in my driveway or garage it’s charging or charged …. If it’s 20f outside I’m starting the car 15 min early and letting it draw power from the house to run heater/defrosters. And then I have a nice warm defrosted car when it’s time to leave. Fast charging is many times more expensive than charging at home. It is also harder on the battery. So unless you can’t charge at home, you reserve DC fast charging for road trips or high mileage days. And yes I got free DC charging with the car, but my time is worth more than what free DC charging would save me vs charging at home. (It’s not worth spending 20-40 minutes to save $7-9) Now, it it was not a driveway where I can charge then yes absolutely preheat both the car and battery because again I value my time & comfort), and will gladly use few KW to both warm the car and save me 10-15 min charging.

I have an EV6 Really wish they would let us turn on conditioning like they do in the new EV9s. I hate the navigation system on the car and use an ELM and the ABRP app because it does a really good job letting me know what my SOC will be. I was on a winter road trips and never really knew if I was going to make it to a charger or not. ABRP does a better job tracking that. So I use that for my route planning but then you also have to go in put in your charger destination so you can precondition it’s really annoying.

It was a fairly recent change and apparently intended to reduce the number of complaint calls EA receives when people go over the 30mins and get charged. I added the $10 and now the app works fine and I still get the free charging. (The app must show that you're using the 'Ioniq Plan' of course)

I have a question. I have been searching best charging practices to prolong battery health. What I found was slow frequent charges is best, eg. Level 2 at 30amps. Does this carry over to DC charging? If I have the time, and it's a free DC charger, am I not better off leaving it charge at 75kwh instead of trying to get 350kwh? I do realize on road trips I will want the fastest charge rates to continue on. If I am just topping up to 70% for Day to day driving and I want to use DC fast charges is it better for the battery life if it is DC charging at a lower rate. I am not planning my charging sessions on this just looking to understand traction battery charging and health better.

Great video. Thank you. So i understand how this will work for DC charging. But what about AC charging when the battery is cold. If you charge eg with 11kw AC or from your normal power outlet with 2,3kw, what will happen? Do you need to preheat the battery? And if yes, the charging AC will take many hours, so in time the battery will cool down again i guess? Nobody really talks about AC charging in winter although most people who own an electrical car will mostly charge AC. Can you help?

They don't say anything because it doesn't need it. The battery can accept 11kW at low temperatures.
@WiljanWiljan
@WiljanWiljan 26 күн бұрын
@@TheIoniqGuy if you watch eg Bjorn Nylands test videos, you can actually see that certain brands (tesla, hyundai, volkswagen etc) behave differently when charging with 11kw in cold winter (temperature lower then 3 degrees celcius). He shows that from the 11kw charging station only about 5kw goes into the battery (you can read this from the obd dongle). The remaining kw is used by the car automatically to heat up the battery. And since AC charging takes several hours (eg charging from 20 to 80%), its even possible that during the charge session, the battery cools down again and the automatic heating repeats itself. So the 11kw AC charging is not efficient in low temperatures (not even that cold) and manufacturers are not talking about it. Also unfortunate many channels do not report about this, since many believe that AC charging is not temperature depending. However real tests will tell a different story....

This precondition complexity is what will drive the average little old person to stay in their ICE car. The makers need to find a way for folks to not need to worry about it. Ah well that explains something in my trip. I stopped at one station and thought it was likely cold enough to need preconditioning but it didn’t turn on - but I ignored cos it was borderline. But when I was 20 mins out from next station and it was definitely cold and still not engaging I checked and lo and behold it was off. I had changed the charging limit by blue link the night before.

Two quick questions: The 20 minute time required is for the amount of time it takes to warm the cells or is it to avoid overheating cells? In other words, if I’m 10 minutes from a charger, will the cells have enough time to warm up? Secondly, more of a statement but if the cells are conditioned but the EA charger sucks, I’ll probably still only get max 125 on a 350 kW charger

Thank you Corbin for all of the great videos. I just purchased an ioniq 6, and so far, I really enjoy it. My question is about service departments at Hyundai dealerships. I live in Mystic, CT and I could go to one of several dealerships for service. I would imagine that some dealerships are better equipped to service electric cars than others. Is there a way to figure this out, other than looking at service department reviews? I purchased the car in the midwest and drove it home to Connecticut. So, I have had very little interaction with my local Hyundai dealership.

Outside of reviews the other metric I use is how many EVs the dealer sells. Some near me don't sell EVs at all and some sell very few, which unless I see otherwise in reviews leads me to avoid them for EV service.

I recently had a very chilly day and was below 20% so no preheating. When watching the temps as it charged, I noticed a huge ramp in charge power when the battery min temp hits 20c. It might get a little faster at 25, but might also overheat faster (and have to slow down) if it starts at 25 vs 20-21. It seemed like 20c was the magic point where the faster rates unlock as the pack warms

@@ChuckvdL yes it's on stages 15,20 and 25 degree's all have higher level of charging speed. Also remember to turn off a cooling and heating in car when charging at this speeds because AC have not enough power to cool both main battery temp and inside of the car and then charging speed gonna drop faster to the end when battery getting hotter.
