I picked up a decent deal just a few weeks back on the outgoing 2020 1.6T Highlander and it's such an impressive machine. "spirited" is the perfect way to describe the turbo models, few other competitors in this segment offer as many smiles under your right foot. New styling still looks like it wants to chew your ankle off, love it, great review.

My wife just bought the runout model kona fantastic car for the price. No rear air vents would have been an absolute no from me, but it's not my car. She tested the toyota yaris suv, better car but no storage space in cabin and less in boot. Also the sales lady made it quite clear that price negotiation was a thing of the past with covid. I really wanted to test drive the ford escape but after 8 years of dealing with ford's so called after sales service having owned the fiesta she gave that a massive thumbs down.. Overall ,very happy with the price and drive of the 2020 kona.

I booked Kona Elite 2.0L 2021, I test drove Ford Puma ST-line and Skoda Kamiq 85TSI but Kona 2021 is better.

I like it, Hyundai Kona N Line in Korea have option with built in dashcam, too bad Hyundai Aus didn't bring that option here

Really thorough review, thanks. It would be great to see a review one of the 2.0L models (mauve the Elite?) pitched up against some of the new crop of similarly sizes compact SUV's, such as the Skids Kamiq, Ford Puma ST & Volkwagon T-cross Style or T-roc.

Fantastic review Tom. Kona N line as a small SUV, is well proportioned & looks great. However, the i30 N line represents better value, with a full panoramic sunroof and importantly (for a sun-baked nation like Australia), rear air vents, if hatchback is an option.

Is the 7 speed DCT a dry type? Kinda a shame that the AWD N-line didn't get the new wet 8 speed DCT, as it sounds like the Kona N will only be FWD.

Yes, it’s the old dry DCT that Hyundai have been using for a long time, which is probably why it isn’t great. The new eight speed wet DCT is good - I’ve now driven it in the Santa Fe and Sorento and have come away impressed. Have driven it on track in the i30 N but that isn’t really a fair assessment for daily use.

Excellent presentation. How long does a CVT last? Why don’t large vehicles have them? Is there an emergency manual release for the fuel filler door? What tyres does it have?

If it's a Nissan they usually fail after 120k ,pular , X-Trail , pathfinder etc But Il be fair a mate that's got a maxama wth 190k never had a issue with the gearbox in fact the whole car has been trouble free excellent carpet ride .But their has been a lots of horror story from disgruntled owners requiring about 6+ K to rebuild rubber band trans

Not wrong about that dct , it is a horrible a bloody thing.laggy and programmed wrong for the car. Standard box would be much better.

We (mainly my wife) have done 1500kms in the 2021 Kona Active so far. Does the 2.0 set the world alight? No. But it is certainly efficient. Is the rear suspension lacking? Yes, but only when the rear is loaded with a couple of adults over some rough roads. For what it is, I think it's pretty good. If you want something sporty: buy the i30 N or the Kia Stinger. 👍

I think you need to do a review on space saver spare tyres?. It should be a first requirement for selling cars in Australia. Any car without one, should loose a star for safety.

I agree with you, I have a i30 with the space saver & it has been a real pain when damaging a tire and travelling say a good distance to work, also I have the 1.6 turbo in mine, the output specs are higher in the kw, has he quoted the correct specs?

$42K to USD is $32K here in the States. I would seriously hope before we spent $42K or $32K depending which country you’re from on this car that you will consider the Tucson, or Santa Fe’

We pay a lot more for cars here in Australia. A bmw m3 drive away is nearly $170k aud, my Aunty in LA said they are under $80k USD.

Great review as usual. Question, is this the same 7spd DCT gearbox to be used in the new i30 N ? I was hoping the new DCT would provide more pronounced gear shifts (up and down), almost manual like. A bit concerned you weren't impressed with the new DCT gearbox.

No - it’s the old dry clutch 7sp DCT, not the new wet clutch 8sp DCT. No relation. Thankfully.

@chasingcars why would you choose a Kona over an i30? i30 is cheaper, base spec has EFI rather than multipoint in the Kona, conventional auto rather than CVT. It also seems more spacious. I don’t get how the Kona exists with such a decent hatch in the lineup already

Tom But a kamiq only got 110kw and the karoq when u go to 140kw you are looking at $50+. So what’s a 43ish car you will get over the n line premium? I’m in market and keen to hear your thoughts??

Test drive the CX-30 2.5, Kamiq 110TSI (almost as much torque as Kona turbo) and the Karoq 140TSI - see if you can get a deal. I’d have any of them, but the dopey DCT in the Kona let me down a bit

Noticeable omissions. Dual zone climate control, memory seats, electric tailgate, paddle shifts and no rear air vents,. Also why can’t they just have a sunroof with the black roof!

@@slow_rednline4874 Not on the base models. You have choice of a dodgy CVT or a suspect dry clutch unit in the turbo. Ugly looks and a google search tells me to avoid.

I hope you will review the updated Kona electric when it gets released next month. I agree with you Tom no rear air vents when spending 42 grand is very disappointing. Rear air vents should be standard across the range for vehicles sold in Australia.

I’m sorry that you were disappointed. Australia isn’t getting the hybrid, and I think it’s fair to say most people here think of the Kona Electric as a separate model, quite different to the combustion Kona and 25-30k more expensive. Needless to say, when the new Kona Electric arrives we will give it the coverage it deserves.

If people think of them as separate it is in part because not discussing them as part of the model lineup perpetuates that. They are ridiculously expensive, true. That $$$ difference should gradually disappear, but that is going to be several years.

And when the Kona Electric isn’t essentially double the price of the Kona, reaching an entirely different demographic, I’ll consider them to be part of the same model range. At the moment they basically share a name and a basic shape and not much else.

lier, regular torque automatic work perfectly and the added benefit of being able to climb a mountain with it. The only advantage to CVT is giving the company a much needed global consumption boost. If my Canadian 2021 had a CVT, I would not have bought it.

@@chasingcars A small package that can scamper up the mountain is bigger selling point then on-road ability. Duel-clutch and CVT will overheat or not be able to put down the power. The regular transmission with 2.0L (with more piston travel instead of bore) is better suited for the tuff stuff. My 2021 Luxury (Canadian) does a prefect job at putting down the power, in Toronto's core, even in 1/2 foot of snow, on the cities most challenging hills (on stock Hankook). With the regular transmission, highway merging can be done at under 3000rpm and shifts while tooling around town in seamless. If Hyundai was smart, they'd put an even smaller crawl gear on the regular automatic to make the Kona even more off-road capable.

All cars are following same trend now of making high mount DRLs and having another set of headlights lower. It looks like double vision, and derivative. Hyundai, Kia, Mitsubishi does it now too, and I've seen Jeep models also the same design. Yuck

Yes. Well, to be fair it's $25k~ because I'd say the performance is most similar to the turbo models. Still, that's like 17 years of electric running before you'd break even with the petrol. Prices have gotta get more affordable before EVs will make sense to mainstream customers - but that said, I see a LOT of Kona Electrics around Sydney. Mostly retired folk driving.

I test drove Yaris Cross, way to underpower and noisy compared to Kona. The only advantage is less fuel consumption in Yaris Cross.
