I replaced my 2017 Soul EV with a 2020 Kona EV and one of the things that was really surprising was how much louder the Kona is than the old Soul. They have the same Nexan tires (different name than what is on the Kona you're testing). The Soul was an excellent highway vehicle, ironically considering its short range. The Kona is a big loud and the suspension is a bit firm. It's notably louder than my 2019 Bolt with Michelin Energy Saver (self sealing) tires. The Konas acceleration is limited by the fact that it ramps up the power really slowly, even when it doesn't spin the tires. It's especially noticeable when you have a lot of weight in the vehicle (like 4 adults). The power delivery off the line is much more like an ICE vehicle, again, even when the traction control does not intervene. The Bolt is better off the line and the traction control is not as intrusive (it allows some wheel spin rather than immediately cutting power and applying brake at the first sign of slip) but slows down at higher speeds since it is a physically much smaller motor with more gear reduction.

The Korean manufacturers are underreporting acceleration in all their EVs -- The Kona, Soul and Niro are all significantly faster in the real world than on paper. My guess is that they're doing that to avoid EV's getting overly noticed (i.e., more $$$) by insurance companies.

I personally think that they are reporting performance with a lower SoC. That way it meets official specs all the time, not just at full charge. Saves people complaining that the car can't meet the specifications for a lot of the time.

@@mlee6050 Yeah, should work great there. It's weird though that some tires are quiet in some cars but then they might be more noisy than competitors in other cars. I mean even with same size/profile/speed class. And even when taken out and being installed again (so not because of bad installation to rims). This must be something to do with the structure born resonances being different in different cars.

I got the Firestone Roadhawk on my Kona 64KwH (2020 Advanced Premium), and the wheel noise is audibly lower compared to the Nexen. Likewise, the grip is significantly better. And then there are a lot of features that you have never mentioned. If, for example, you have Break Hold applied, the hope brake is activated automatically when the car is switched off.

nim ajji . As far as I know it is the same. Some models are made in Korea and some in Hungary or Chezk Republic (I think it is) and there can be a small difference. for example on the standard tires fitted. But otherwise 2 battery capacities with 3 models in 4 equipment variants. And some use choices. Leather seats, bluelink, Onboard Charger upgrade and so on. And the 2020 model with 64 KWh battery can be mounted with tow hook for trailer.

Even if I understand what we are trying to explain when talking of torque, I can assure that the actual numbers don't give much clue. The only thing that counts is to get down as much "power" to the road as possible. n a petrol engine you normally measure torque on the engine shaft (why diesel cars usually have a higher torque but lower revs). On an electric car it makes no sense to even talk about it. Better would be to mention "Force" in kN. It's not a criticism to you Björn as I know you are very scientific in your test. No, it's more meant to the other s.c. motor journalists and their followers. I was lucky to drive a Kona for 200km around Umeå last week, which was my first experience of driving electric. Stepping back into my rental car was literally as entering a steam engine after that. Thanks for good true tests
@bjornnyland
@bjornnyland 4 жыл бұрын
I partly agree with you. But torque is in fact important. But not too important to onlyl mention motor torque. What matters is wheel torque after the reduction gear.
@jonasrosengren9093
@jonasrosengren9093 4 жыл бұрын
@@bjornnyland Yes, wheel torque is more or less equivalent to Force with similar wheel diameters. Do you by any chance know how and where the torque on an electric car is measured? What if you have two motors (etc etc)? In the acceleration test it appears (by only watching the video) that you have constant torque/force/acceleration up to around 70 km/h. Above this point it probably reach is max power. The car weights 2 tons and has a constant acceleration of 4.5 m/s/s up to 70, which means 9kN. If you convert it to wheel torque assuming wheel radius of 0.3m, you would get 1350 Nm per wheel. No exact numbers but ballpark..

@98dizzard
@98dizzard 4 жыл бұрын
Why would that make any difference?
@TwentsHoarau
@TwentsHoarau 4 жыл бұрын
Depending on the software. It could be faster because at level 0 and sport mode, you switch to another map to deliver max power. But at 100% acceleration pedal you go to this map anyway. So during the 0.001s between 0 to 100%, you will lose a little of power... Technically, it would be faster BUT no way to measure the 0.000001s difference ;)

If I didnt drop the KW V3 to its 1.5" it actually was less comfotable, as the KW V3 perloads the springs when you set ride height, so its smart to try out the 1.5" drop. nim ajji look at the power gauge on the left, even at 100% throttle it starts with at least 3 power bars short then they increase as the speed increases. You can wheel spin with 60bhp. It’s the problem with FWD cars.

Daniel I it’s measuring how much power from the battery it’s delivering of the potential 100%. I have the same gauge in my Ioniq. It won’t be showing HP as it cannot measure it just power from the battery. Many FWD cars limit power under 30 mph or so to increase stability / traction.
