One of the best reviews of this car I have seen. Well done. I've had this awesome car for 2 months and I love it. Re the range, if you drive it in eco mode around town you can well exceed the 480km range. I have had it report 564km at 100%. The regen is brilliant on this car. Great control and I love the feeling of charging the battery when going down hills and slowing in traffic. I barely use the brake pedal.

Walked on a Hyundai lot last Thursday, test drove Kona demo, was offered the car two days later. Got a $5000 provincial tax credit in BC, federal tax $5000 credit in 4 days, so we will buy it May 2nd, just one week after the test drive. Not bad for a one week wait.

I can tell you from personal experience, you can use the Kona's amazing acceleration generously thanks to the equally impressive regen capability! The car recovers on average about 0.30 miles per stop, which means in town driving, it's adding back about a mile per three stopping events. Drive for awhile and you can easily recover 10 miles of range! Acceleration is so quick, that you're actually up to speed with very little total power used. I have been routinely averaging over 5 miles per kWh in town driving, and that includes using AC as needed, switching into normal mode for some "fun sprints" and then back into ECO mode for maximum efficiency. Based on my previous driving, the car now shows around 305 miles "anticipated" range available with a full charge. Because the EPA really has no clue about EV capabilities, the established range of 258 miles is based on having the car in normal drive mode, and averaging 4 miles per kWh. On the highway, at speeds below 60 mph, it's possible to get 4.2 mi/KWh. At speeds around 65-70 mph, efficiency drops to around 3.8 mi/kWh. Driving a solid 55 mph the car can potentially achieve over 260 miles with no regen or coasting considered. However, even freeway driving can work for the car when other traffic is about due to slowing - regen, and drafting - less power used, and coasting. While each event may seem to only make a tiny difference, it adds up. Even with my normal 80 mile per day commute, when combined with city driving, I can average between 4.5-4.8 mi/kWh for 288-307 miles absolute.

I love the in depth review, what would be really really interesting subject to cover if you had the time, would be the charging situation in this country, from what i gather there a numerous companies offering charging bays, but you have to have a seperate app on your phone for each company, and there are no universal charging stations were one app does all, so not only do you have to have multiple apps, you must also have multiple adapters for different charging ports. So a really in depth review would be great, as i think lots of people are put off buying an electric car for the lack of charging bays, but the minefield of companies using different adapters would be good, and also the cost of charging at charging points time speed, compared to a home charger. and bare in mind 20% of people in the UK live in Apartments, and would not have access to home charging.

Yes, I wondered about the landfill claims as well. The source seems to be news articles stating that a lot of lithium batteries end up in landfills. An example is an article from The Guardian from 2017 with the title 'The rise of electric cars could leave us with a big battery waste problem'. Despite the headline the article ends up telling the reader, who read past the headline, that the lithium battery problem in landfills is mostly due to consumer electronics using this battery type, it does however also tell that the current battery recycling technology does leave waste and that the lithium usually is lost because it will cost to much to extract from the melting waste. This waste can however be used in construction, according to Umicore.

@Noah_E3 жыл бұрын
I WAS seriously considering buying a Kona EV until I noticed that the charge port is in the front of the vehicle with no real bumper to speak of. Why on Earth did they do that? Other manufacturers put their charge points on a fender or quarter panel or higher and back more like in the Leaf for obvious reasons. Street park it once and someone “parking by touch” will destroy that cover and possibly the connection behind it. It’s just a bad design. Do they offer any kind of support or solution for when that happens or is it unchargeable and scrapped following what would otherwise be a minor bump?

You lost me 2 seconds in! "NO manufacturer is more invested in the whole concept of clean automotive mobility than Hyundai." Excuse me???? What frickin' rock have you been sleeping under? Ever heard of a company called Tesla? They've invested absolutely EVERYTHING into clean automotive mobility! And just one of their models outsold BMW's entire fleet for the month of March. I guess you don't consider them a manufacturer???? I've owned a Hyundai (best vehicle I ever possessed) and we currently drive a sister Kia (also great so far) which happens to be a Hybrid. But it's still not the "Cleanest" vehicle in the world.
@michaeldawson63095 жыл бұрын
Clean automotive mobility..... who gives a damn about clean automotive we have endured 100 years of ICE machines so far. This revolution could have come much much faster but has been held back just like alternatives to Gas and Oil / Coal for electrciity production. There is a lot of money invested in carbon fuel and they want to sweat their assets. Tesla has done more than most to make this happen give them credit. Hyundai like so many other manufacturers are playing at EV at the moment just lip service. Unlike Tesla that has actually delivered and is increasing its production. Its going to take the competition a few years to catch up with Tesla around performance / range and autonomy.

I have tried the e kona and I was quite underwhelmed by the vehicle. It does have all the tech underneath but at £35 k it is quite a Spartan car, most other cars in this price range have a vastly superior spec and quite frankly closely look the money, this car unfortunately doesn’t. It looks basic, feels basic and that is what let’s an otherwise good car down. Would I buy this car in its present spec for the asking price, the answer has to be NO.

A good informative video, you are missing the elephant in the room though, you are reviewing a car you can't buy! Have a look at Hyundai click to buy, the waiting list was a year, now you just can't buy one at all. Apparently the UK was allocated 1,000 vehicles that allocation has been used & with a world wide shortage of batteries, no sign of anymore soon.

Hi Paul, thanks for the feedback 👍 You are correct, no more new Kona EVs will be available in 2019. Sadly, this was not the case when this video was made.

I live in London so hone charging is not an option
@michaeldawson63095 жыл бұрын
I bet no one buys an EV for planet saving reasons so lets stop going on about that its just not true. People will buy EV's becasue they drive much better than an ICE car and will have similar if not better range. That said its hard to get one at the moment due to the shortages of batteries or so the manufacturers claim. Plus they are at the moment at the top to middle end of the car buying price lists. This too will sort itself out when more manufacturers bring their EV variants to market post 2020. I will be buying an EV as my next car but not before my current lease expires in 2022. Sure I hope to have a good selection by then and also maybe the charging infrastructure will have matured in the UK. However if we have the option of a 300 mile range then off street charging will be almost 99% suitable for me having to visit a roadisde charger very infrequently. The future is exciting and more EV's cannot come fast enough. I am also awaiting mass adoption of commercial EV's for delivery vans etc.. as this will provide a great chassis / engine for an EV Motorhome :-) Diesel is so crap.
@michaeldawson63095 жыл бұрын
@Pete Coventry makes 100% sense. ☺
@michaeldawson63095 жыл бұрын
@Pete Coventry we just need battery supply to increase to allow mass adoption. It will happen but may take a few year's maybe 2022 will be the year oft the EV I love them. But have a lease on my CH R which i love. But it would be much better if it was an EV. I think i am in the position that a lot of people are in i.e at the precipice of the transition. For me that's 2022

Depends on the relative prices of gas and electricity where you live, and how far you drive daily. In some places it's a net win to go electric.

Great review, very in depth lots of good detail on the car itself which is great. My only bugbear is the emphasis on "single speed gearbox EVs HAVE TO HAVE". They don't have to have it, it's just better that way. Someone's already converted an old range rover into an EV and retained a manual gearbox on it kzbin.info/www/bejne/f3jNgIxqf6egr5Y

@cardude53235 жыл бұрын
Whats to hate? Smoother, frugal, quiet, more usable power. If you're going to buy a modern white goods on wheels car anyway. Why not? As a mechanic, I can tell you internal combustion engines are a stupid idea now. The emmisions regs and amount of parts to go wrong etc.
@kp18045 жыл бұрын
@@cardude5323 You are right. But they have to make better batteries with greater capacity and endurance especially when all electric car systems are on. I think internal combustion has a lot to give in terms of technology. But obviously EVs will finally prevail.
@cardude53235 жыл бұрын
@@kp1804 an EV with 250 mile range I think would be fine for a lot of people. It would suit me for 363 days of the year, bar the 2 days I drive London to Cornwall at 315 miles. I think it's the age old "right tool for the job" scenario. I know of people who do with a Nissan leaf 99% of the year. Then hire an E class for the weeks holiday for £200.
@matpat26365 жыл бұрын
@@cardude5323 Assuming you don't drive the whole way non-stop, the 64kwh Kona would do the 315 mile journey just fine. With a 98% charge my car is currently showing a 273 mile range, which in my experience is achievable (although you wouldn't risk running the battery down to 0%). Stop for half an hour for lunch or whatever and put the car on a rapid charger. On a 50 kw charger you'd get another 100 miles. On a 100 kw charger it'd be nearer 150-200 miles. The reviewer doesn't touch on the fact there is a 4th 'economy plus' drive mode which extends the driving range, but with careful driving you may even be able to do the whole journey in one hit (if you like to live dangerously!!)

An option many will face with the lack of Kona availability in the UK 👍
@randallscott-key8025 жыл бұрын
It will also come with zero warranty, a near clapped out battery, and poor fitment and mechanical issues common to a car manufacturer who has only been making cars for about a decade. $40K for a used Tesla or $40K for a brand new Kona? I'll take the Kona everyday of the week. The Kona battery warranty is LIFETIME. Tesla's? We both know the answer. Tesla markets a low base price, then options the car up by $20 or more. Not to diss Tesla because they are the drivers of the slow, but gaining speed conversion toward electric cars, but quite Frankly, with Hyundai and a host of others finally jumping into the pool, Tesla is going to have a hard time keeping up. What seems to get left out by all the Tesla fanpersons is that even COLOR is a multithousand dollar option, as is a white interior, as is any sort of extended warranty. And thanks to the snobby mentality of most Tesla buyers, they've all jumped right off the diving board into the deep end of the pool and paid the rather high vig for "autopilot," which really pushes the Model 3 into the price range of the Jaguar i-Pace. If I were considering the the i-Pace versus Model 3 for $70K, it would be the i-Pace hands down, everyday of the year. Also, the Kona is capable of MUCH greater range than the EPA spec 258 miles, and when I say capable I mean, easily so. I've been averaging over 4.5 miles per kWh which equates to 288 miles range, and my car is currently showing an average of 5.3 miles per kWh which equals almost 340 miles absolute range. Unfortunately, none of the "reviewers" who make these videos have actually driving the Kona enough to know this.

The most cost effective to this day EV is still the Model 3, also bigass batteries never go to land fills. I'd be more concerned about the tiny batteries from your airpods and their recycleability, I guarantee those are going to be the real problem at land fills. The smaller the battery the more difficult it will be to re-harvest and reuse. EV batteries will never be found at land fills.
