Richard ,allow me to share my expertise with you : When new, automatic transmission fluid should be red, The red dve is added so the assembly plant can identify it as transmission fluid and distinguish it from engine oil or antifreeze. The red dve, which is not an indicator of fluid quality, is not permanent. As the vehicle is driven the transmission fluid will begin to look darker. The color may eventually appear light brown. @ob1Katoby110 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the very informative video. Looks like it is not easy to actually 'flush' these transmissions. I think the capacity spec for the AT is 7.5qts and you are adding 4-5 qts. so your leaving about 1/3 of the old ATF in the transmission each time. So it might take 3-4 times to get the transmission fluid really clear.
@richardlloydusa10 жыл бұрын
You are right. It will take several drains and fills to get the fluid nice and clean. Really it's my fault for believing that it did not require service until at minimum 60,000 miles. I will now change it every 30,000 miles along with the coolant. I am sure I will do a few drains and fills every time too. Thanks for commenting and watching.
@michaelpistilli58237 жыл бұрын
It's not clear in the procedure if the if the engine is off or running it does not specify so I would assume the engine is running which would make a difference in the amount of fluid used since some fluid would drain back into the pan when the engine is shut off

thanks for letting me know. My son has a 2006 Sonata. I think I will install an inline filter. I find it hard to believe a steel mesh filter can stop those particles from going through. I have a Dodge Caravan and I installed a dorman pan and change the transmission fluid once a year + I have an inline filter and oil cooler. 200,000 miles and still shifts like brand new. 4 quarts xosts about the same as synthetic engine oil. A transmission is almost as expensive as replacing an engine for why people wait for 100,000 miles beyond me. I'd would do it once a year for the little work involved.
@richardlloydusa8 жыл бұрын
Agreed. The inline filter can only help to keep it clean and changing the fluid on a fairly regular basis should keep the transmission working well. I will be changing it every 15,000 to 20,000 depending on what I find in the future. Thanks.

Hi Richard, I have complete appreciated your videos on your Sonata! I have a request. You're engine bay always looks clean. Is there a way you could do a video of how to clean the engine bay and what components on the Sonata that are sensitive to detailing with water? Thank you again! AC
@richardlloydusa9 жыл бұрын
I would like to take credit for the engine bay being clean but it is primarily because I live in Texas (a very dry place). I am hesitant to make a video on washing the engine compartment because of the potential for damage that could possibly happen. For the most part the electrical parts should be sealed against water penetration but I am sure they are not all water proof. For example the fuse box is water resistant but it is not water proof as it does not have an O-ring seal. For the most part if you use soap, water, towel and a low pressure water stream (shower setting on a garden hose) to rinse it off you should be fine. Here is a forum I use as a resource. www.hyundai-forums.com/yf-2011-sonata-i45/153338-do-you-guys-wash-clean-your-engine.html It's been a great source of information for me and well worth the free membership. Hi ,Richard L ,I watched all your videos presentation it helps a lot,I am a GM mechanic for almost 20 years and I owned many Chevrolet Caprice , Lumina ,celebrity ,two Impalas and I AM TIRED OF TRANSMISSION problems in GM since they start to built front wheel drive every time you change transmission oil the transmission start to slip shudder etc ...so I recommend not to touch it and it last longer it is amazing , so I bought a 2012 Hyundai Sonata of course different concept and engineering than the GM cars ,so I went to Hyundai dealer bought the Genuine Hyundai ATF SP5 ,they recommend semi synthetic oil now for hyundai YF 6 speed transmission it is much more expensive than valvoline it cost 4 liters 41$ Canadian dollar ,I drove 1400 Kilometer transmission change faster ,feel slip and I am freaking out I wished I didn't touched it ,it doesnt have much mileage 94000K only Hyundai recommend to change it at 96000K wich in american 60000miles sorry for my metric values ,so what do you think I did wrong ,is your transmission changed behavior after flush ? should I change it second time may be it will be better after ?please tell me if yours changed behavior you feel it different in driving like 5th gear goes on 50 kilometer by the speedometer it is to soon don't you think? it feel slipping sometimes? I ask you that because I am used to GM cars with 4 gears and I never driven 6 speed before ... tell me your opinion is it normal I am feeling that in driving or it is really normal ? best regards . Danny
@richardlloydusa10 жыл бұрын
I have never owned a GM so I can't comment on that. I used to be a Canadian so metric is not an issue for me. LOL. The transmission behaviour after the many transmission fluid changes has not changed at all. It was silky smooth before and after the four changes. I have left it alone since the last change but I will be swapping it out on the next oil change which is about 700 miles from now as the final drain and fill for the next 30,000 miles. As far as what you did wrong I really can't comment on that as I was not there when you did it. A few things to note are the temperature should be in the right range 50-60C or 122F-140F I used an infra-red temperature gun on the transmission housing drain bolt. The car needs to be level to drain the fluid to the right level. Remember this method only drains 4 litres of the 6+ litres in the transmission so some of the old stays behind. Be sure that you follow the Hyundai procedure 100% www.hsguide.net/repair_procedures-231.html. Looking at my drain plug from the first drain (lots of metal) to the last drain (very little metal) the original oil was heavily contaminated see my last video at 5:50:kzbin.info/www/bejne/jmGymKZ3qLSSmqs I would get your car level and check the level by pulling the level plug and seeing what happens. It should just dribble out. If it does not you need to put more in. If it spurts out heavily you have too much in there and you should let it drain until it dribbles out again. Also remember the human factor. You have had issues with other transmissions and maybe you are hyper sensitive to the operation of the transmission. I know I was a little paranoid about the operation of the transmission after the first drain and fill but after seeing it's performance over a period of time it seems to working just fine.

But when you read what they call extreme you will see that most driving conditions described are by Hyundai's definition are extreme. BTW my transmission never slips. My bet is that new fluid in your transmission might stop that behaviour. Your transmission should never slip. Thanks.

Hyundai says that the ATF should not need to be serviced until 100,000 miles and then they don't mention doing a flush just the service I do in the video. I have to leave it in your court whether you want to or not. I have changed the fluid for a total of five times and it cost me $16.99 each time for a total of $84.95. Richard, Thank you so much for your time and hard work showing us the results of two drain & fills and the results. I believe this is a first ever shown with a comparison on the sonata yf model. What great information. This definitely helps us choose what method we want to use when choosing between a drain and fill & a flush. Great work! 1 question...that original price your dealer quoted is close to what my dealer quoted 289. for a complete machine flush. The service advisors have very little knowledge in my experience and they could have given you a flush price...Yes Hyundai does not recommend it but the dealers are doing it. & after seeing your videos what i would personally do is pull my drain plug, hold the fluid in with a finger clean the magnetic bolt then bring it to the dealer for a true flush.
@richardlloydusa10 жыл бұрын
You are welcome. The hard part was coming up with a way to show the difference between the color on all the drains. I think you can see it well in the split screen as it pours out and somewhat with the sample tubes. I will do it the same way again next week as well. I am not sure what they were quoting me as the lady did not go into detail. She just told me it was $300.00 because of the "special fluid" the transmission takes. Going to have to talk to Hyundai Tech and see what they tell me. I am digging for an exploded view of the transmission and maybe something that shows me where the filter in the transmission is and how much is involved in replacing that too. My transmission is shifting silky smooth at this moment and it is under warranty to 100,000 miles so I will stick to the drain and flush method until at least then. I will follow the, "if it's not broken don't fix it" philosophy for now. If you're going to get it flushed ask if you are getting a new filter and if you are ask if you can have the old one (I would love a picture of it). I am thinking that if they are not replacing the filter it would really not be worth it to me. Thanks again. Keep me posted. I will post the next one in a week or so.

Hi ,Richard L ,as you said is wright I am sensitive to change in transmission behavior I developed that by working and testing cars over the years ,and about changing the oil on my 2012 Sonata I did it by the book same way you did it and for the transmission oil temperature I connected the scan for it and it show you exactly by the temperature sensor how much is it ,you should get a scan they are not expensive I paid that 270$ it has a lots of features ebay has it ,it is affordable and it has power train and transmission live data ,you will like it ,So thanks a lot for your effort answering me,today you are not going to beleive it ,I went to the dealer ship Hyundai and the guy who sold me the trans oil he sold me the wrong trans oil,because I went there to buy new gallon of the same oil I said I will give it another try ,he gave me different type of oil Hyundai genuine SP4 it is 18$ for one liter ,I freaked out because I did put in the transmission the wrong type of oil ,they start apology to me with no end and they gave it to me for free after they spoke to the sale manager I got 10 liters I drained the wrong oil poured 3 liters from the new one I removed top transmission hose from cooler ,start the engine for like 30 second you can see the new oil coming put engine off I flushed the old wrong type of oil it took almost 6 and a half liters ,take the negative battery cable for 3 and a half minutes and put it back again because the module is adapted to the old oil behavior.. bottom line go tested the car Richard totally back to normal from first test ,amazingly worked again, normal smooth changing ,slower changing and stable as new,and no slipping ,the SP4 oil has less viscosity than the semi synthetic ,the semi synthetic is used in Hyundai vehicles 2010 and less ,I did the test hopefully everyone will learn to put the wright type of oil as specified by the maker . Thanks Richard and happy to share and exchange knowledge with you . Danny.

I was going to mention the adaptive database the computer builds to control the transmission but it's adaptive so it should not need to be reset unless of course an anomaly was introduced. In your case it was the wrong fluid that was the anomaly . Wow, I would be so pissed if they sold me the wrong stuff and told me it was the right fluid. Glad you got it sorted out and that Hyundai took good care of you once they realized they screwed up. Happy motoring. By the way they did the right thing by wiping the computer data.

I bought a 2006 Hyundai accent with 23-24,000 KM. It is over 9 years old and did not come with a service history. Should I have the transmission fluid (and or brake fluid changed) - or should I still wait until the 100k mark? Or 50k at least? (Might take me 2-3 years to reach 50k from my current 27k though). I did my oil already since that was easy, but I don't have the tools or experience for transmission/brake fluid change...
@richardlloydusa9 жыл бұрын
+GenericShirtNinja You should be fine with the fluids. I would follow the recommended service intervals with all the fluids but if you are worried about it you could always just change them so you know you have nice clean fluids but that's an OCD thing more than a required thing. I like knowing all my fluids are as clean as can be (within reason). Fluids are pretty easy to change and quite cheap to do. Bottom line for me and my suggestion to you do not let the fluids go any longer than the (extreme service limit). I am not sure what that is for your accent but on my Sonata they had one spec for "normal" use and "extreme" use limits. In the case of my Sonata they recommended never to change the transmission fluid under "normal" use but to change it at 60,000 miles under extreme use. As you can see from my first change it was very dirty. Thanks.
