I-15, Historic US 395 South - The Temecula Valley, Escondido Fwys - Temecula to San Diego, CA (END)

To tell the story of this section of I-15, we must first start with US 395. Today we start at the northern city limits of Temecula, where we immediately stumble upon Winchester Road. Winchester Road is former SR 79, relinquished in the city limits of Temecula, but is noteworthy for being a newer addition to the system; That segment was added in 1966. Historic US 395 parallels us through Temecula, running along Jefferson Ave and Old Town Front St which it used until its signage was removed in the 1970s.
At Temecula Parkway, US 395 and SR 71 switched sides of the freeway and split for the last time. SR 71 continued east on modern SR 79 while US 395 followed Rainbow Valley Blvd (and, later, Old Hwy 395) through the canyon. US 395 paralleled I-15 through the canyon to the north side of Escondido when it branches off onto Centre City Pkwy. It then rejoins modern I-15 to cross Lake Hodges as the original bridge is no longer traversable. We enter San Diego proper and US 395 branches into two main alignments. Prior to 1951, US 395 took Pomerado Rd into Poway then back into San Diego near Miramar. The 1951 alignment was built almost entirely as a divided expressway, which rejoined the old alignment near Miramar, and ultimately connected to the 1948 Cabrillo Freeway through Balboa Park.
When I-15 was set to be extended, however, Caltrans opted to avoid using the Cabrillo Freeway. This was most likely due to its lack of expandability going through Balboa Park and sub-standard design. This led to the new Interstate being pushed east away from downtown, heading almost directly south from Miramar. US 395 and I-15 would have parted ways south of Miramar, but due to the freeway being built so close to the base it was impossible to expand the freeway and people were discouraged from breaking down near the base. As such, California opted to re-align the freeway and push it further east as well to avoid any issues with the base. This was the perfect time to create the new interchange for I-15 and US 395.
Until the new alignment could be decided, US 395 was the through route for the freeway. Traffic wishing to continue on I-15 South would have to use a regular exit onto Harris Plant Rd and use a frontage road to reach Kearny Villa and jump on the remainder of I-15. This was fixed in the early 1980s once the bypass of the base was completed. By that time, US 395 had been removed and became SR 163.
Before the interchange was built, the rest of the freeway was. This route was planned in advanced as Route 103, and was partially built as such before I-15 was extended. This is why, south of I-8, I-15 becomes SR 15 as it was built below Interstate standards. While Caltrans has plans to upgrade it, they have still not been completed in full.

I'm almost always going the speed limit, but because of the way I edit the video's speed it's hard to pin down. I'm averaging about 570 MPH throughout the video with the cuts however.
