It works until you get one semi then it's all screwed up again because of how long they take to get to merge speeds

This will only work if there are gaps in traffic during rush hour.

40 minute drive to go 12 miles? That sounds downright speedy compared to Boston traffic, where 12 miles from I93/I95 to the city can range from 30 mins to 1h 10m at 8am inbound. I'm honestly wondering why I'm hearing so many complaints about the traffic. Is it because the onset of the traffic congestion was so rapid?

Boston has worse traffic overall vs Denver. It's like someone that lives in LA telling you that an hour and ten minutes to go 12 miles sounds quite speedy.
