The _real_ solution would've been building a brand new freeway from scratch. Northern Virginia has too few freeways compared to the average suburban area.

While I do love the idea of a new freeway, it’s not going to happen, because now Northern Virginia from DC to Fredericksburg is far too developed at this point. The time to have done it would’ve been 20-30 years ago, but even by then, the area was already pretty developed by the 90s/early 2000s, and that would’ve been very expensive even then. Now in the 2020s, any new freeway route that would be of actual use/help move traffic would be astronomically expensive, particularly if it spans more than one county. The right of way acquisitions alone would account for a disproportionate amount of the budget, then you’d have to deal with opposition from every locality that is affected. Any large expanse of green space still left in NOVA that could be developed is either protected, very expensive, or backs up into heavily developed areas.

@@austinvenable63 There enlies the biggest problem(s). Northern Virginia let sprawl get out of control, and is one of the most poorly planned areas in the nation.

All of this has been a waste of money, 66 is worse than ever, Expres lanes are not designed to ease traffic congestion they're designed to make more money for the state.

More lanes equal more traffic and in a few years; it will be as if nothing was ever done.
