Video from Rainbow and Troy, California along I-80 showing the icy/snowy roads, traffic accidents, and chaining stations as heavy traffic flows slowly by. The snowfall there caused extensive traffic headaches. Some motorists were stranded on the roads.

This is on Interstate 80 between Calif and Reno, Nevada. The chain up area is at a lower altitude for safety. The highway reaches elevations of over 7,000 feet and at the higher elevations everything is frozen solid and there is frequently over 12" of snow. CalTrans has learned the hard way what is needed to safely negotiate the Donner Summit, particularly for tractor trailers...
@fun2beme66
@fun2beme66 6 жыл бұрын
Oh, and by the way this road is a grade all the way up to the summit - for you Foreigners - that means it is uphill for about 15 miles and then all downhill for about 15 miles, and there is pretty much a solid line of tractor trailers in the right lane. You have to bring your own chains, and the chain monkeys(as they're called) are paid by the driver to put the chains on - they're independent contractors and they charge to put the chains on. No, we don't salt roads in the West, it rots the underside of cars. And it's so nice after a day of work in San Francisco to go skiing up at Lake Tahoe, and have someone else kneel in the slush and put your chains on for you.

I was a freaking rookie there were going around me and flying. Ever since I came back to the D.C. area these people don't know how to drive in the slush, snow, ice. My wife that lived in Milwaukee are telling these people in the D.C. area to get the F out of my way. Learn how to drive or stay home, LOL. We never used chain as long you got the right tires. I can drive in this weather with a RWD and FWD vehicle with no problem. Having a 4wd or AWD vehicle it's like icing on the cake

56 426 225 so let's say they get 3 feet of snow, the roads still get plowed on mountain roads and they get plowed rather well. Unlike northern and midwestern states mountain road crews are strictly there to maintain those roads not highways, side roads and alleys like here. I've driven on plenty of mountain roads while snowing and it's never been more than 6 inches on the roads.

People who are making negative comments about California snow don’t live here. This is the Sierra Nevada, that little snow you see is not what chains are for. It’s the 4-10 feet of snow ahead of you for why you are asked to chain up on 2wd vehicles.

@Dovenpeis 7 жыл бұрын
dark Schneider I would have understood your objection if this was a once in a century occurrence, like in an anomaly, but as I understand this is quite an expected risk of driving on the I-80 during winter season. Just the obviously planned apparatus in operation tells a story of very high risk for snow and ice conditions. So, ya, someone should tell the Americans of the greatly improved safety benefits of proper winter tires. And this is not really about bashing Americans, I would be very surprised if the Alaskans do not agree that it is horrendously ignorant and stupid to set out on a journey, with a high risk of snow and ice conditions, in all-season tires, which is basically summer tires. I live in a region similar to the Alaskan climate. Of course, here everyone and their mother use winter tires during winter season, but this is where it starts to get interesting for you. In the early fall people still drive around with summer tires, or as you call it, all-season tires, but if they are setting out on a journey across the mountains, where winter tends to come early and there is a very high risk for snow and ice conditions, they will either be packing winter tires along for the ride or change to winter tires from the start. So as you can see, I do not see how you have a legitimate excuse for driving on the I-80, with what is basically summer tires, during the snow and ice season. To me, the very idea is just horrendously ignorant and stupid from the get go.

People in France don’t know how to drive. In 2018 for 3-4 days there was some snow on the roads and it was a tragedy. People left their cars and slept in the nearby shops. If you have winter tires, traction control and some experience you need neighter chains nor 4 wheel drive. Good luck watching youtube. Improve your skills in winter in a safe area.

The chains arent for the area that they are in, they're for the higher elevation up ahead. That's why chain up requirements are only on one side of the highway. The other side is chains off because they are headed downhill (less snow) It is normally snowing pretty heavy on top to require chains and the plows cant always keep up with the snowfall and the visibility is very bad between the snowfall and the high winds over the pass.

You have to get the cars off the road first, otherwise the plow sits in traffic and you have accomplished nothing. Been driving over Donner as a truck driver for 12+ years now and was I ever so happy when they tore down the old bug (agricultural) station down which gave us big rigs lots of room (and lighting) to chain up at. My '72 Ford F-100 is 2 WD, but got my hands on busted chains, cut/repaired 6 of 'em down to size for it. My other 3 vehicles have 4 WD and I use the same tire size on all 4 vehicles. Made 6 sets so WHEN, not if, a chain breaks, I can slap another on it then and there.

I've skiied and worked and drove over Donner Summit for 40 years. I have a CDL, if you run chain control check point or speed it's a work zone and fines double $600, vehicle impound plus towing $950 reckless endangerment ticket and you can be jailed. Progression of semi truck metering state law requires that trucks must have chains and know how to install them most don't and they lie. Storms develop without warning over 100 mile area with 5-7% grades, snowplow run in packs of four they sand and salt and plow in five mile laps. The idea is to get the refugees out, keep the roads open and without chain control they couldn't do that!

I'm a truck driver and I have experienced this first hand. First I get pulled in to "CHAIN UP" when there is only 2-3 inches of slush on the road, and the miserable trooper ORDERS me to chain the damn thing. So I do, then he comes back and I have the chains on the DRIVE AXLES and the moron says down there your supposed to put them on the rear axle...and run on lockers??...WHY would I???? Then I get to through all this traffic crawling up the 80 into the pass, I get up to the top, and NOTHING!!!! JUST SLUSH.....so I pull off tear off the damn chains chewing the crap out of my nice Michelin snow tires, and the TROOPER ( remember him) comes by and asks what I'm doing...By that time I'm not a trucker I turned into some red eyed alien people eater, and I screamed ripping these &^%$#^&*&@#$!!!! chains off my truck....So he checks my license plate, and sees I am from B.C. Canada, and he smiles, okay he says, you know what you doing....end of story.

well, California makes the big rigs chain up with a 1/4 of snow on the road, if a car had slide off, before the chain up went int effect. with heavy loads trucks don't have a problem, if you was in Wyoming, you wouldn't chain up, but California is weird

Dennis Mckown Here in Colorado, they'll make big rigs chain up in any ice condition and little or a shit load of snow. A dusting or 2 inches if snow makes traveling a hazard. Why, ice build up and the little snow will build up in the tires causing slippage.

That's on the uphill to go up another 5000 ft... Getting the chains on in the transition from cleared to you cant clear that crap. You need a certain amount of snow/ice/slush to prevent the chains getting chewed up (and prevent chains chewing up the road)... they move the chains station up and down the mountain as needed. The chain installer guys get really mad when you want to put your own on instead of paying them...
