Ditto! Ice is tough on all drivers f they do not have the correct tires on their autos and still some may need chains, cables, straps to assist in gaining traction Problem is people in general think they sneak by without any of these things and most do fail miserably. Here's The best part, If folks want to go ice skating they buy ice skates, right? Yet when they go driving on ice they do not prepare by buying ice rated tires for their autos! Priceless.

Needless to say, I sympathize with those drivers who have to brave those road conditions.

@Lup3r6 жыл бұрын
Most of these are in my city. There are multiple reasons that so many of these people can’t drive in one of the snowiest weeks we’ve had. Reasons: 1.) It hit faster than expected. We were at school that morning, sent home early, then at around 3pm all roads were completely covered with snow. It kept snowing. And snowing. And snowing. 2.) More than expected. Normally we get 24-72 hours of snow on the ground, and maybe 12 hours of it actually falling. It’s normally spots of ice, and that’s it. This time, overnight, some of the snow melted and was refrozen into ice. Then, more snow fell. This was thicker/more ice than we’ve gotten in a long time. 3.) Ill-equipped. We have I think 1 snowplow for a 25 mile radius of hills and valleys. Plus, your every day joe, not the best with anything past normal conditions in the heat, is not going to know the first thing about driving his front wheel drive light sedan with summer tires (all season at best) on a hill that’s iced over. That’s a lot basically to say “we ain’t never seen dis much snow”

I’m late, but I’m from Mobile, AL and am going to college in Birmingham, AL, the city featured here. Mobile gets any wintery weather once every 3 years and birmingham gets an inch of snow on average per year. It is February and I have yet to see a flurry. We have *absolutely* no idea how to drive on ice. Laugh all you want, it is funny ill give you that, but no matter how much wisdom you give us from driving on snow all your life we will not budge. This is because if you spend 5 months out of every year driving on snow or ice, you get pretty used to it. You know how to react instinctually, because driving is an instinctual course of action that you build up over time. Well, when you drive in these conditions once every 10 years, you don’t exactly develop the instincts for it. When your car is sliding, you do what is intuitive, not what someone told you 5 years ago on a youtube comment section that one time. And what is intuitive to us is to try to correct our course of motion, because that is what works in non-icy conditions. We end up being equivalent in skill to a 16 year old who has been driving for two weeks. Also, the roads aren’t salted, we don’t have that stuff here.

Have Americans ever heard of winter tires?
@snowrocket7 жыл бұрын
Yes, but in the southern USA, snow/ice is so rare that it's not worth buying them. Better to just stay put for a day.

Better to purchase tires chains online and be prepared.

What are these “winter tires” that you speak of?

winter tire i guess it has special jacket wrap around the wheel so it won't get hypothermia

sazuma .. Ever heard of Alabama, smart-aleck? Mild winters and long hot summers? Not cold enough, often enough, to justify winter tires.
@affordabletowing32107 жыл бұрын
If folks want to go ice skating they buy ice skates, right? Yet when they go driving on ice they do not prepare their cars by buying ice rated tires and or chains! Priceless.

I live in Alabama and we we were stuck on the highway because people couldn't get up a hill, and this was the first time we got snow in like 8 years or so.

Don’t they have ABS (Antilock...) down there?
@sonofagun5305Ай бұрын
That's why I always use snow tires WITH studs and change them out with regular summer tires when it doesn't snow. I also carry cat litter and traction boards with me.

I drove my Camaro through 8 Canadian winters and never got stuck. Car was base so open differential no traction control no assist of any kind abs was somewhat present and it was 5 spd. Always had a good set of winters and extra weight around the rear axle and drove smart. When ice hit the road I travel to work i've never seen so many awd cars in the ditches and fields lol. You just gotta drive smart and not get overconfident and be ready for it or it'll own you.

what most people do not know is abs only works if there is a turning wheel say if you brake and all four wheels lock up near the same time abs will not work and your car will lock all wheels up and skid over the place(happens on ice or sand or mud) why it doesn't work is because the abs system doesn't know the car is moving as the only way it detects your moving is the abs ring on each wheel(3 wheel abs has 1 abs ring on the diff or drive shaft and 1 on each front whee hub) do note all these newer cars all have very advanced abs from the early 90's on most cars yet they still lock up all 4 without the help of abs now to avoid this you slowly apply pressure on the pedal or if you locked up take your foot off the pedal slowly and lightly and the abs will kick in as soon as one wheel(abs ring) turns and activates the abs system if 3 wheels lock on and the 4th wheel is spinning the abs system will work but if all 4 wheels or 3 on 3 wheel abs systems lock don't panic release pedal

genmaxpain I tend to think of it as mashing is only fine if you're fine with sliding that way. Otherwise you should be pumping or not braking and trying to steer until you're ok with going straight again, then you can mash it.

I don't understand. Isn't ABS a standard on cars in the US? No advance driving courses available?
@WTMNNJR3 жыл бұрын
ABS doesn’t halo with stopping. Only helps with control.
