Essentially, the difference is at the atomic level. A ferrous magnet achieves its properties due to the molecular arrangement of its atoms. When you heated the magnet up, it causes the atoms to expand and potential shift out of the alignment that causes magnetic force. Then once the magnet is placed into that device, a new magnetic field is exerted on the ex-magnet, rearranging the molecular positioning again.

TL:DR magnetism is part of quantum physics and heat only effected the metal's ability to be strongly magnetic more along the line of the metal's structure alinement that effect it's magnetic force. magnetism is part of quantum physics it goes down to the atomic level. everything is magnetic just some materials have strong enough fields to be noticed by us. magneto controls magnetism. think of it like a onion its layers of metal but these layers only form a strong magnet if all the parts of the layers are facing the right directions and heat can make them not do that as they arent as compact as before so they move and face which ever way they want till cooled. that machine forced the layers to face the right way to a much greater degree as neodyminum is just a very magnetic element but some can have impurities that can effect it slightly so the that machine basically forced out those imperfections. so it became stronger as a result.
