I Accidentally Saved The Farm $40,000

Harvest is wrapping up on Cornstar Farms. The video starts with bin fans being shut off, filling diesel tanks, and checking on augers in the big machine shed. After heading to the main heated shop with the 1995 Dodge 3500 Laramie dually, we filled the 2001 Case IH 2388 combine with diesel fuel, cleaned the windows, and greased it.
After cold starting the 1981 John Deere 4840 and the 1991 Case IH 7140, I brought the case over to the main farm to fix a plugged auger. In the mean time, Cooper and Chuck got started combining. Once I got the auger unplugged, I ran out to the field to join Chuck and Cooper. When I was waiting for the combine to fill up, I got out to inspect the job the combine was doing and evaluated if we should change settings on the combine.
After lunch, Cooper was having some power issues with the combine. We were not sure if a fuel filter was plugged, if the rotor was plugged, or if the air filter needed replacing. We tried cleaning out the rotor first. Although cleaning the rotor helped, it did not solve the issue. We ended up changing fuel filters.
After combining for a few hours, I decided to talk about what I think about while I am in a field. One of those things is how I can improve a farm. I highlight a few things I would improve about the farm we are currently on and about how we implemented no-till corn on corn into our operation and plan on continuing to do so in the future. I discuss how we plan to manage residue and the things we are doing in our operation right now for no-till corn on corn to excel.

You and cooper need to learn the grain setup job from your dad, a year or two is fine while you learn all the ins and outs, but you should take pride in giving your dad the easiest job possible. His body will last longer, and I’m sure you want him helping as long as possible. Great job on the vids

I agree with you.....Sure Dad has taught them all they knew, Cornstar can do many things....I was impressed when he was cutting limbs from the tree.....he did a good job....but Dad was near by to make sure he stayed safe and gave him orders if he thought he needed it....his Dad is Funny :) So glad I found these videos? Just what I don't need another video to get hooked on....but this might be my fav....I do like the cooking videos tho....I usually don't watch the dumb videos....I like to see everyday things going on.....:)

My grandson Jeffery who is 6 going on 21 loves Cole and his family. He is a born mechanic like his dad, always has his tool belt on ready to take things apart. When you say you would like to turn the three fields into one large field by removing the trees surrounding the fields, what will you use for a wind block? The best gardens we've ever had were covered by and planted within a 'compost' layer of waiste plant materials ! Tilling and/or plowing was usually optional. Our uncle tried all manner of really old methods on his farms; blended with intelligence guided by experience. I hope he passed his findings down ! GO FOR IT ! Happy New Year

Thank you for the video ride along. I use to rent a small house on a active farm. So I got to watch the super long hours the farmer put in during harvest. He litterally was harvesting by himself & would work until he couldn't stay awake, shut down the machine and take a nap in it until the cold woke him, than continue on. It actually scared me for his safety. I'm so glad your family works the farm together. Why I bring up, you talking about flattening out your low spots. Choose wisely. The farm house I rented was surrounded by a creek & every year there was some flooding, the creek filled up and spilled over into the farm fields. One year it was so bad, I couldn't leave the property, bridges were not passable. The basement always had a little water running across the floor in flooding rains, but the bad year, my s10 pick up had water up to the I bar and it was only 10 feet from the house. The standing flood water was within 4' of the corner of the house. The well had to be shocked that year. So think long and hard about where the flooding rains will go when the Earth is saturated. You'll likely loose that much more yield , if it doesn't have any place to pool.

A friend of mine has a farm in Penn., and they've done no till for quite some time. Tilling releases nitrogen from the soil, no till holds it in, and reduces the amount of applied nitrogen. Great to see y'all working with the microbes from decomp!

Ok, since your always thinking of ways to improve your farm when bopping around on the combine, how about looking into high priced specialty and exotic corns that sell for a huge premium. Popcorns, nutrient dense corns, heritage corns, native american cherokee varieties, colored corns, flavored corns, etc...you can run a test bed of say l0 acres w 4 varities per acre to see how they yield or what they need in your soils, climate, etc...

Very little corn grown in America is used for food. Most of it is used to feed cars and cows. The other leading use of corn is whiskey and Coke.

The entire state of Iowa, if allowed to grow at maximum yield, could feed the entire planet! Of course, that was back when the Earth's population was only around 4 Billion.
