You can also partition a database on time. If your data typically pages by month, you can get the next month's data from a new server. If that doesn't scale you'd split it by weeks, then days, and so on.

hmmm that could work. I think the only thing to consider is what if you update a page a year ago and you're adding new content now. It might be a bit to find out where your data is and which partition.
