I've been debating watching it. I saw Kathy Bates doing a recent interview that I enjoyed, and they showed a clip of the show. I've always liked Bates' work. She regards it as probably her last job before retirement. So it would be nice to end a great career on a high note. I'm glad to hear you approve, knowing it had a high bar to hurdle with you. In essence, it is a reboot and recasting with the genders switched. It would have been better if it was a continuation of the original with it being Ben Matlocks daughter/granddaughter following hks footsteps. Even bring in some original cawt members as cameos. It to me, a slap in the face of the legacy of the original and Andy Griffith.

I agree with everything that you said Dave. Even watching the pilot, and I love Kathy Bates, but I was like...."I don't know"....until the end! Wow what a twist of a surprise! Then I continued to watch each episode & have really enjoyed them. I'm glad I was wrong too! 😊

The key thing is to watch the last minutes of the first episode. I gave the show a try because of Kathy Bates. I thought okay it is a fun show but not necessarily something I would have watched without her being the lead. Then the last couple of minutes is what got me interested in the show. I am not 100% sold yet, but it gave me enough interest to keep watching. I enjoyed her in Misery as well as The Waterboy. She delivers well in this show too.

I’m giving the show a try because I love Kathy Bates. I definitely didn’t see that twist coming at the end of Episode 1. However, I’m not entirely sold on the show yet because I find a few of the characters a bit annoying and stereotypical, and some of the writing just seems unoriginal.

I "accidentally " watched this show a few weeks ago (it came on after Ghosts and I didn't change the channel) And I am hooked. You were totally right Dave. Kathy Bates is killing it. She's one of the best actresses I've ever seen. The writing is phenomenal. The lawyers are so sleazy, I feel like I need a shower after the show. If it hadn't been for your comments, I might have changed that channel and missed one of the best TV shows ever.

Dave my wife and i love this show! But you must watch the episodes in order! Kathy Bates is fantastic and the little "twists" throughout are fun. If i may i would also recommend the follow up show called Elsbeth. Also helpful to watch the episodes in order. IMO it is a rework of Columbo.

I did watch Elsbeth the other day after Matlock on Paramount+. I have been avoiding it. I love Carrie Preston, but the premise and promos had really turned me off. The episode I watched wasn't bad, though. I might watch it again but only if the mood strikes me. I enjoy Matlock and Frasier, so they are regulars to me; this would be a "sometimes" if so.

I didn't watch the original. I do, however, acknowledge its quality and Andy Griffith's greatness. And I understood the premise: country boy always being underestimated. Well, that's the theme here, too. But what took it further was the back story where "Maddy" is not who she says she is. But she still leverages that "aw shucks" to her advantage. It is a splendid show, so much so that I STILL don't feel the need to go back and watch the original. This isn't a remake or a reboot. It's a reimagination. And it works.

I didn't watch the original Matlock show much and I'm not a huge Kathy Bates fan but I loved the first couple of episodes. The writing is witty, the plot suspenseful and the cast on point. Bates plays her "dual" role incredibly well...she's believable with great timing. I look forward to the next episode as the story unfolds!

If you haven't watched the first episode of this one, I would suggest you give it a try. But...if you really just don't care to watch any of the new programs that are offered up by the networks, I totally understand. They have burned us all quite a few times.

I agree I didn't like the new Battlestar Galactica, Hawaii Five-0, MacGuyver, Knight Rider, Bionic Woman, Magnum PI, The Equalizer, Night Court, Quantum Leap all failures I definitely won't watch Matlock.

I couldn’t agree more, I sat down to watch the first episode only because I had read some good reviews and I was ready to hate watch the show but surprise, surprise I was hooked! It is so good that it’s one of the few shows I actually watch on regular TV, not streaming, because I’m dying to know what happens. Strong recommendation.

I like Bates and Jason Ritter, but I couldn't make it through the first episode. Cliched and overly political. Guess I'll go back to watching Murder, She Wrote and Law and Order(seasons 1-17).

I actually thoroughly enjoy the new Frasier reboot. I think it is because Kelsey is even funnier than before and I do love his faculty colleagues Toks and Nicholas (Olivia and Alan). It is now my preferred appt on Thursdays. Actually Thursday IS my tv day now, it seems! Frasier, Matlock, Ghosts, Matlock, L&O, and SVU, as well as NFL! I had the SAME concerns as you did about Matlock. I felt like Matlock, along with the other reboots and new shows were catering to a segment of Hollywood that would like to re-do everything because they have no new ideas and well, we know what the other problem is. I adore Kathy Bates, but I thought - uh, this is going to be bad. But I watched the first two episodes and I love it. It moves briskly and the people are engaging. Of course, I do still have some reservations about a few of the characters but how can one really complain about having a show with Bates and Beau Bridges?! I guess I just kind of look at it really as in the "Matlock" universe and not Matlock. That makes it much easier for me, tbh. I loved Matlock. Part of it was AG's charming character and its decent stories. It was kind of like how I loved Murder She Wrote and Judging Amy. I guess I am now getting to the age where I am coming to want to watch older people in stories on tv, especially ones where they clash with younger people. As far as Night Court is concerned, at first I hated the new show. I mean, the first episodes were really bad. But I stayed for John Larroquette. He is one of my fave people. I could watch him in anything. But it got a little better over time. I heard that India is leaving and that saddens me. Is it actually renewed or is it canceled? I admit I wouldn't really miss it if it goes, but still love seeing JL.

A year ago I totally agreed with you and I think I even commented on that video but…Last week I had the Matlock channel on (on Pluto TV) and when I got back from brushing my teeth the new Matlock was on. I groaned about it b/c I didn’t want to see it but I was just curious enough so I watched it and, like you, I was very surprised. Since then I’ve been on the lookout for the second episode b/c I won’t subscribe to the channel it’s on but hopefully they will put this on DVD and I can buy it later. Now, as to the other remakes you mentioned. Personally I didn't even bother with Quantum Leap b/c I saw the previews and yikes they looked horrible and I was right. But, I was very pleasantly surprised by the Night Court and Frasier updates b/c they do seem to fit in those worlds seamlessly and they both felt like natural progressions of both story lines. But trust me, I could go on and on and on about “remakes” or “updated” shows that were huge disappointments in both tv shows and movies.

I disagree about the new Quantum Leap. I feel like the show has met my expectations as a continuation to the original series. Can't wait for the new season! As for the new Matlock, my girlfriend and I got excited about the show! Can't wait to get started on this series!

As a fan the story DID meet my expectations. The quality and the story on the new series IS good and the charm of the original is there.

I recently heard of the New Matlock series from a friend. I goggled it, there was not a lot of hits, and something about Kathy Bates not wanting to do the series. Did the show go back 12 yrs on NBC? I watch a great deal of NBC programming in the PNW (unless the series) was not in this market I never saw an ad for it.

I agree. The folks behind Matlock are doing it right. Not just rehashing what came before. I'm shocked that there still is some creativity in Hollyweird. Your skepticism is earned. The other follow-up shows mentioned just seem like lazy attempts to make a buck on an established name.

Dave, Kathy has her own TV Series before "Matlock" it's "Harry's Law" (Comedy-Drama) on NBC in 2011 the series end it for 2 seasons until 2012. Unfortunately the series didn't pick-up for Season 3 on NBC.

I'm definitely not DEI obsessed. I hate all the gender and race swapping that occurs in Hollywood. That said, I loved the first episode of Matlock! And honestly cannot wait to watch the next one. Very well done. It's really not what you think. I don't have high expectations for where they'll take it. They ALWAYS find a way to ruin things we start to like. But I was more than pleasantly surprised by the first episode.

The reason why the initial video was retracted is because he was wrong. It’s not a reboot or remake. It’s a completely different story and show just using the name. And it’s amazingly acted and engaging.

I'm not a fan of many current US shows, being more a fan of the classic shows you talk about here. I even switched off this Matlock, early on, as the choice of supporting cast left me cold. I really think the lead boss woman was miscast. I cant see her and John Ritter Jr as ever being a couple. Anyway after viewing your post I had to check out an encore screening, to see it till the end. I still don't understand why it had to be called Matlock, but i am curious now to see what happens next.

I heard from a friend of mine that the show is quite good and I should watch it. Now that it has your seal of approved I will definitely check it out. I was also disappointed with the Nightcourt and Quantum Leap reboots. And you are right about the Frasier Reboot. I love the original Frasier show and watch it regularly from beginning to end. The reboot has been as you say “inconsistent” . I am still watching and the last two episodes have been better. Thanks for the video… I will watch the new Matlock this week😊👍

@@jdsundstrom My parents and I have a bit of different taste of shows and we would like to see if the new Matlock will last as long as the original. It does look good from the trailers and we do like how they kinda reference the original show in a way. We're hoping it will last.

For me I’m not totally against the series my issue has always been its name cause it didn’t need to bank on the success of the original series Kathy bates name alone could have probably carried the series under and original name and like u pointed out the dig at the original series was not cool either just like the reboot of the wonder years cause I liked the concept of the series showing the 60’s from an African American family’s perspective and I like Dulé Hill who was the father but calling it the wonder years was was made me check out if they would have called it something like the Williams or something I might have at least given it a chance cause race had nothing to do with it for me

I don't mind seeing diversity in a show. In fact, I welcome it. But, no worries. There's a lot of TV out there. I'm sure you'll be able to find something else that you will enjoy more.

u were wrong alright. i watched the 3rd ep and it was awesome. totally awesome. K Bates is in deserving of one of those tv awards. Bates has said she will leave acting once this show is over. so now the trick is how to make it last. revenge, the tv show, did last many yrs. i think 7 or 8. without checking. // have a good one. Happy Halloween wear a donald trump mask and go to maga homes. the maga will hand out more candy to a person with a trump mask than to a person with a Harris mask. lolol
