The drooling could be him looking for mom's milk, because when kittens knead they're looking for milk. The habit can stay with a six month old kitten, and the kneading when they're happy stays over when they grow up.

When it comes to eating too fast, or giving him snacks between his main meals, you could try a little toy that he can get treats out of slowly, so then he has to work for it, and it's mentally stimulating for him. Congrats on your cute baby!

you're probably tired of getting cat advice, but a lot of people recommend switching to wood pellet litter and a sifting litter box if you don't want to get an automatic litter box. Also, I learned very early on with cats that are that food driven to get them a puzzle toy you can fill with dry food/treats. Happy for you and Remi!

If he's food-driven, you can train him! Positive re-enforcement is amazing... I trained ours to sit and wait for his food (no more counter jumping). Also, recommend velcro over magnets when pet-proofing; it's a stronger hold and won't accidentally trap them between the contact points if/when they burrow their way into a drawer.

I would recommend keeping the water bowl/container far away from the food bowl(s) because cats don’t like drinking water near their food as they think it’s ‘contaminated’ so that would be a big thing. And if that doesn’t work I’d say get a cat water fountain of some sorts. I recently adopted another cat too, his name is Loki (he looks like Tom Hiddleston) and he’s five months old and he always falls into the toilet bc he likes watching the water drip after it’s been flushed (dw it’s always clean)
@killakamikaze88

awwwww what a cute kitten! If you’re having issues with him drinking water, the two things I was always told was 1) faucets and flowing water. Some cats enjoy that better and there are some bowls that have that. 2) Add a little water to their wet food which tricks them into hydrating more.

I would get a little device called a Litter Genie to eliminate the smell of the poop. It’s a little trash can that has a little reservoir cut off by a spring loaded plastic platform to create an air tight seal so the smell won’t poke through. I got one for my cat and I haven’t smelt her poop as much at all.

I love him!! My cat is also super driven by food and one thing I've found to help with her behavior surrounding food is having a constant source of it. At first she ate a LOT but once they realize the food isn't going anywhere they don't eat nearly as much and they are in general less stressed and don't beg for food. Not the best option for everyone but it is one to try and/or consider!!

When I introduced myself to my boyfriends cat I did the “hand greeting” where the you stick your arm out and the cat sniffs your hand. The cat had sniffed my hand for all of a second then instantly started to nuzzle me, my boyfriend was shocked, his cat is a really shy cat and doesn’t like visitors much but for some reason, she wasn’t shy towards me at all.

It's so cute hearing you talk about what you go through with him lol, cats are very much "Imma do what I want to do" creatures so they can be both fun and frustrating at times but it's definitely worth it when you snuggle up with your fuzzy buddy and just enjoy the time together. Young cats have a whole lot of energy so they need lots of playtime and stimulation so it's great that you dedicate playtime for the little guy.

About click training: when my cat was younger (she's now 8 btw) me and my father really tried training her and if we had insisted it would have worked because she still comes when my father calls her (mostly) and we now have a toy for us that clicks and if we play with it she gets very focused because she still remembers my father trying to train her I guess! So I don't know if it's normal or not, but it's definitely possible and it might be fun!

The combination of him kneading on the cat bed and drooling on it might mean he was separated from his mom too early. We adopted a little lady who’s mother passed pulling her and her siblings out of a house fire. She must’ve been young at the time, cuz she does the same thing to fuzzy blankets.

Tip about the bowl, cats don't like their whiskers to be touched when drinking and eating so maybe his whiskers are touching the edge of the bow when he drinks. Also, you can show him a KZbin video about how to cover his litter, I've seen videos of people doing that and it seems so work. Hope this helps

for the stinky litter box, it can also depend on the brand of wet cat food, like it does with his breath. He'll most likely start learning to cover his poop and stuff when you switch over to actual litter. If not you may have to actually show him he can dig in the litter (while its clean obviously lol)

Advice re: training - if you want to teach him tricks like "sit", clicker training makes it go so much faster. I had one cat that I taught to sit without it, and he was very food motivated so he picked it up quickly, but for the 2 cats i have now, they would have been hopeless without the clicker, lmao. the most important part is that you have to practice with them regularly or they'll forget the commands pretty quickly. It's not as formal and regimented as it sounds though; you just buy a clicker, teach them that the clicky noise = treats, and then start training by clicking the instant they do the thing you want them to do and then give them the treat. I'm using it right now to teach my newer cat his new name - i say his name and then click when he makes eye contact. I genuinely am not sure how you'd use clicker training to train them _out_ of an undesired behavior, though. Mainly with undesired behavior, the thing you have to do is deny them attention while they're doing it. So if he's meowing a lot when you don't want him to, ignore it, don't react at all, and then give him attention when he starts being quiet again. With the biting your feet problem, same deal - don't react at all. i know it's tough bc it hurts, but just accept that your life will be wearing thick socks until you break him of it, lmao. Cats engage in behaviors that get them what they want, so if they stop getting what they want, they'll stop the behavior. (beware the "extinction burst" though - they start going _even harder_ on it right before they finally give up, and that's the most important time to stick to your guns of not reacting.) It sounds like you've already managed to teach him to let you sleep by proving that waking you up doesn't get him food earlier, so it's just a matter of applying that method to his other behaviors. The most important thing with training a cat is CONSISTENCY. You have to make sure the reward or consequence happens 100% of the time. If they think their attention-seeking behavior works _some_ of the time, then they'll keep trying it until they get to the one time when it works. Re: the windows - fool's errand, lmfao. It's basically impossible to stop a cat from doing what they want unless you give them a more attractive alternative. With cats, you always have to give them a "yes" option for every "no". For example, if scratching on the furniture is a no, then you need to provide a scratcher nearby that they are allowed to scratch on. For the window by your dresser, give him a path from the bed to the window that _isn't_ along your dresser and then make the dresser an unattractive option (with sticky tape or bitter apple spray or whatever). If you have the space, the simplest solution is probably going to be a little cat tree that's about window height, that he can easily jump to from the bed and then climb into the window from there. Other options might be rearranging your room so your bed is closer to the window than the dresser, or putting up a shelf above the dresser that you can move the plants to and let Remi freely use the dresser as his pathway (probably not feasible since most apartments don't allow you to drill into the walls). My guess is he wants to sit in that window because a) it's got a unique view out of it that he can't see from another window, and/or b) he wants to look outside and be close to you at the same time. So telling him "no, sit in _that_ window instead" might not be a workable solution because that other window doesn't give him what he wants. In general, dealing with cats just requires an understanding of a cat's mindset. They are concerned with "what do I want, right now" and "will this get me what I want". You cannot make them change their mind from "I want this" to "I don't want this", you can only change their mind from "I want this" to "I want _that_ instead". They understand correlation but not causation, which is why punishment doesn't work - they quickly learn it only happens when you catch them, so what they end up learning from it is "don't get caught." The only way to stop them is to teach them "this will _never_ get me what i want." And by far my biggest piece of advice: watch Jackson Galaxy's channel about cat behaviorism!! He's extremely legit and you can learn a lot from him about how cats think and behave and how to co-exist harmoniously with them.

As for breed: most cats are just standard issue cats, aka cat version of mutt. They’ve only fairly recently started actually breeding for different breeds in cats. (“Recently” as compared to dogs and their breeding). The main thing people use to describe the is DSH (domestic short hair) and DLH (domestic long hair). And then they just go into coat patterns, like tabby or calico or tortie. Edit: 8:10 also awww he suckles!! Cute!

A tip ! Wet food generally makes cat feces smell worse, I’d recommend slowly switching to daily dry food and wet food once / twice a week (as a treat, it’s not necessary). The only risk then is dehydration so watch his drinking habits, but if it helps you could give him a fountain to stimulate him to drink more :)

Recommendations from a serial cat owner who currently has 9 in terms of water and litter To encourage him to drink more consider buying a water fountain - cats prefer drinking from running water. Cats also can take water in from wet food For the cat litter you can mix the litter with litter fresh to reduce odor, or you can buy litter that reduces odor

Hey Fredric, about the water, cats dont usually drink water because it isnt flowing water. You should get a cat water fountain or running water because he will definitely like it better because it will make it taste fresher to him. And the reason why he probably drools and kneads because he is probably sucking on the bed because it reminds him of his mom. Lol have a nice day :)

@TheGuindo

scratching post: absolutely essential; spray bottle: not recommended. Spray bottles don't really work with cats, they learn to associate the spray bottle with _you,_ the person spraying it, rather than with the behavior they're getting sprayed for. so instead of learning "don't do this thing" they learn "don't do this thing when that person is around". Basically it just teaches them "don't get caught", and can even teach them to fear and resent you which is not the desired outcome. The "no, but" method is better - discourage unwanted behaviors by providing more desirable alternatives. frex if they're jumping on the counters, put up a cat tree nearby that's taller than the counters so they can get a better view if they climb the tree than they do from being on the counters. then put sticky-paws tape on the counters or something similar to discourage them from getting up there. they'll quickly learn that the tree is the better place to be. "no counters, but here's a cat tree."

such a cutie! Some advice since you asked- get those balls removed ASAP, since he is 6 months he is old enough and the sooner you do it the less likely he is to pee on everything, not sure who told you boys were easier but girls don't tend to pee on everything. The poop smell could b from his food, my baby was 2when we got her and her poop was pretty bad since the shelter had her on Purina, once we switched she was fine. Also it is normal for cats to be energetic after eating but Jackson Galaxy says to play before eating since its more natural or something. Also with the food I suggest baby locks on the cabinet. Oh and he may not be drinking the water because it may be too close to his food or litter, they like everything to be far apart, but since he's on wet food he may just not need to drink as much.
@TheGuindo
@TheGuindo 3 жыл бұрын
yeah "hunt, catch, kill" is how Jackson Galaxy puts it. simulate the hunt by playing with them before they eat, and they'll settle down and be relaxed after eating instead of feeling like they have all this energy they didn't use up when they should've.

One of my cats do that all the time so I feel like it is normal For water, they really like moving water so you might want to invest in some water fountains. Start with a cheap one to see if he likes it and move on to better ones that will actually last For your plants: cats like the chlorophyll in plants and you often see them eating grass as it help them throw up when they have a stomach ache. He might start eating your plants so be cautious of that

For food driven cats it's interesting to clicker train them (positive reinforcement). I taught one of my cats to sit so he'd at least wait for me to put his food bowl down instead of jumping and trying to steal food (also useful for getting leash training if it's something you'd like to try). Like, my cats still do ridiculous shit and break my stuff, the training is just something to engage them mentally and they get their favorite treats in the end (fun fact, my cat now gives me a high five instead of just stealing food from my plate).

So from what I know cats have a marking behavior around often visited places. That might be the scratching behavior on the toilet. there are scratching posts and scratching matts you can try. put them in the general area u expect him to use it. there are some you can attach to walls and corners.

My cats had the same problem with not drinking. they would pass their water bowl and try drinking from the toilet or a dripping faucet. I figured they must like moving or fresh water so I got a pet water fountain off amazon that cleans and keeps the water fresh as well as making it easier to drink. my cats love it!

If you notice he has a tendency to be destructive, consider getting him a sibling! Kittens really thrive when they have another cat to be a cat with. There's a whole thing called "lone/single kitten syndrome" that hopefully Remy won't have, but you never know 🥺

just a note if a cats food is near water they may not drink from it since ofc in the wild. eg. a rat dies near a water source the water may be diseased so yea they might avoid drinking it.

My boy kitty also kneads and drools on things (mostly my lap)! I was really worried about it when I first brought him home but I've learned it's just a quirk about him. He's nearly 3 now.. Looks like he won't be growing out of it😺

Congrats on your new child! I have a boy cat and he does the same wiping his paws on the wall and not covering his poop thing. My cat also doesn't drink enough water and it became a problem with hydration especially since we used to give him mostly dry food. The vet said to cut down on dry and to add more water to his wet and it cleared it up. If you're still having problems with him not drinking enough water that's always an option :)

so about his needing and leaving drool spots: it’s possible that he’s acting as though he’s nursing. this is a result of being taken away from their mothers too early. i only know this because my boyfriend’s family is fostering kittens and they do just that
