Seeing that it is a program for Ilayaraja's birthday, the excessive and exaggerated words of praise and adulation are understandable. And any artiste who has influenced the emotions of a generations of rasikas deserves such adulation. But before calling him God of music ( I can understand it as an emotional outburst, but not accept it as a statement meant literally ) etc, one has to remember that Ilayaraja was not the first to do all this. He followed the footsteps of several geniuses who painstakingly paved the road for him to march through. Such names as G.Ramanathan, K.V.Mahadevan, C.R.Subbaraman come to mind immediately. Especially remarkable was M.S.Viswanathan. All that this generation of the nineties have felt emotionally and musically had been felt in abundance with regard to MSV by those who were in their teens during the late fifties, sixties and early seventies. He was the pathbreaking genius of TFM ( not in any way taking away from his predecessors, contemporaries and successors ). As Ilayaraja himself said "நான் உருவாக்கியதெல்லாம் அவர்கள் ( விஸ்வநாதன் ராமமூர்த்தி ) துப்பிய எச்சில்" ! By accepting and recognising this, we do not in any way put Ilayaraja down. Rather, we understand his achievements in the proper perspective.
