It’s time to fish for the big and angry bluefin tuna! We spent the first day fishing offshore for tuna commercial style (aka wicked tuna style). This means gunnel cranking, landing a fish, sampling the meat and selling the fish on the commercial market…most likely to the Japanese seafood markets 🐟 The second day of fishing was then a recreational fishing day which means any fish we caught we could either keep and eat or tag and release. What we were surprised to learn was that bluefin tuna fishing is all about stealth mode. Things like black anchor rope, clean leaders and blacked out crimps can make or break the Boston tuna bite.

Last time I went on a bluefin charter my buddy and I brought 18 tuna to the boat (keeping one & tagging/releasing the other 17). Fish we kept was #185 and the biggest was estimated at #325.

Seals play hell with your bait, they did up at PEI. Fight a fish a long time and it wears a hole and if he gets any slack he can shake the fish. Another issue is the gill plate will cut the leader. Up at PEI they have a garden hose on the line about 2-3 feet with 4 egg sinkers taped on the back end and it is attacked to the rod with a rubber band. When a strike occurs, this slides down to the tuna mouth and protects the line from the gill plate. Cat 1 hurricane going over the keys. Earlier today they had it going over duck key and this afternoon it track goes over key largo.
