Hello my friend, I had to take a break and head down to the coast because I have been frozen in the snow for weeks! I'm just defrosting and trying to fix my boat which is basically ruined right now. I almost sank my boat and it needs a lot of work before it's running again.

I learned a lot about sailing on my friend’s 34 ft. boat, but I also knew about the maintenance he did. As I told him regularly, my goal in life is to always have a friend who owns a boat.

There should be a large screw on the side of the engine halfway down to the water line, use a large screwdriver and loosen, while holding the engine and it will release the hydraulic pressure and the engine will drop down. I see this info is a little late!! Lol

Hi Hanna. You don't need to replace the bilge pump. You can get an automatic switch that is quite a bit cheaper which will make your existing bilge pump automatic. I know Rule makes one.

It would be a dream to live on that sailboat. I was really into sailing for decades and my last sailboat was a smaller cabin boat, a Hunter 22 which I loved, but unfortunately life's responsibilities took over. I still miss it so much. Enjoy!

I’ve heard that a boat is a hole in in the water where you throw your money. You have to love them to own one.. A friend has one that that he and his wife love. It’s definitely a lot of fun, but he’s spent more time working on it than enjoying it. If he hasn’t yet spent more money fixing it then it cost to buy it he will soon with his upgrade plans. You’ve inspired me! Not to buy a boat, I have enough projects already 😂 but to get some art supplies. I haven’t drawn or painted in a while.

Hello Hannah. A standard multimeter won't show the battery condition. On a multimeter, you can still have a weak battery and still show a 12 volt reading, because it doesn't test "under load." You should pick up a battery tester for the type of battery you have. This kind of tester will test the battery "under load" and tell you if it's bad or not.

Yippee! A follow up video on your boat! My preference is a either a small yacht or catamaran between 40'-55'. We all know it takes constant work and the money to fix unexpected things, but I consider that part of the fun and challenge. I'd still keep a condo on land just in case. Just food for thought... Your next purchase need to be a small turboprop airplane. :) Great adventures.

The Tsunami from the Tonga volcano seemed minimal in your area. Up in Santa Cruz a number of boats were damaged and the harbor parking lot was flooded. Back in 1964 the great Alaska earthquake caused our house in La Mesa (east of San Diego) to vibrate. Two days later (Easter) we went out to Coronado. The beach near the Hotel del Coronado has an obvious high water line. The people in the hotel must have been concerned. I’ve had a healthy respect for Tsunami’s ever since, even though I’m now in Minnesota.

I would expect there would be a manual override to the tilt for the outboard. Maybe you should look into a Porta-Bote. It's an ideal dinghy and extremely easy to take down and stow on a larger craft.

Dear Dr. Straight. The Yamaha outboard on the dingy has tilt hydraulic rams that have bleed screws. Those screws can be loosened and the engine lowered manually. You would need to rig a catch basin to recover any hydraulic fluid if you need to use that method in the future. I would guess most of the electrical connections are oxidized from water exposure. The battery switch and fuse buss will all need to be rinsed in fresh water, dried out, and cleaned up with some 250-400 grit wet or dry sandpaper. I'm in N. San Diego County and owned boats since I was 13 yr.s old. Been diving San Diego Waters since 1973. If you ever need any info or help while in San Diego, please don't hesitate to ask.

Most guys ocean voyage carry a small can of bitumen to fill in all cracks and seams…portholes and hatches. Using it especially during hurricanes. It became like a bottle with a weatherproof cork in it. We did have to open one hatch a crack every two hours or so to renew the oxygen supply. Yuen bituminous the hatch closed again.

I was thinking "after pumping the water out, some baking soda and then dry out the inside with an old towel, then place a rubber seal around the panel board so that water doesn't get in even if it rains, should do the trick! I left my 4x4 truck for a couple of weeks in the winter time in the Mid-West when I moved and the battery was nearly dead when I came back, jumped it with a handheld jump starter to rejuvenate the fluids in the batter and was ready to go again! Seems as though batteries gain impurities over time and changing the fluids helps to reduce those impurities once again from reading online. Can imagine a boat sitting all winter what the battery would be like! Love your videos, you are awesome for who you are!... Take care!

When we lived on a boat in Dana Point I bought a $12 tripod off amazon and put it in the middle of my dinghy to ensure the rain wouldn't pool on the cover. I also tied a line from bow to stern that went around the top of the tripod to basically make a tent over the dinghy, it never failed. I highly recommend it.

If you are traveling by boat, a sailboat makes lots more sense. Even under power, their diesel sips fuel. And fuel costs are never going to be cheap. What's cool is using Mother Nature to move the boat. Weather is not always cooperative, but pretty awesome when it is. I have a 30 footer and hope to sail into my 80's. Knock on wood :-)

Robert is correct. All outboards have a release valve to lower engine. And after you relocate the electrical junction box, buy a can of Corrosion X-HD or Boeshield T-9 and spray on the switch and cable junction block. Do not use WD-40 as it’s really made to displace water on contacts. Thus the WaterDisplace (WD). You can also rig up a tent pole flex system to maintain your cover and prevent it from sagging and pooling water.
