One thing I did when I was in a similar situation after paying bills and putting money in savings, I'd buy a $5 to $20 gift card for my local grocery store and Amazon each pay period and set them aside. When I needed/wanted something and funds were low, I'd use the gift cards instead of the credit cards. It let me pay down the debt and build up my savings.

I went through FPU years ago, a few years after I became a widow. It was so helpful and I paid off a fair amount in a much shorter time than I thought it would take. I cancelled three CC's but kept one. An annoyance to my FPU mentor, for sure! I use it and always know the balance. I keep the cash in my bank account and pay it off every month. I get a whole 1% in points and am not at all interested in getting another card that would "pay" me more. I use my CC as a budgeting tool, not for points. I would also NEVER recommend anyone do what I do! It takes work and a lot of financial discipline which I'm good with. About 3 yrs short of bs7 and can hardly wait!

I've seen many people fall back into debt, and it is very similar to when you lose weight too fast and end up getting it back. Knowing you were able to get out of debt before is a double-edged sword in many cases, because you tend to think if you were able to do it before, you can do it again. And that is true for most of the people who were actually able to get out of debt, but its not a healthy relationship with money, in the same way people losing weight sometimes end up with an unhealthy relationship with food.

This is such a good point. To give my experience, I have never had consumer debt except for a car loan that I paid off and had the car for 15 years. However I was disorganized wasted/loss money. So my savings did not increase the way it should have because I did not pay attention to my spending. But once I heard that Mint was going away, I started using spreadsheets and formulas to track my spending. This has been a game changer. Expense tracking helps me to be intentional with my spending, and to understand my cash flow in semi-real time. I try to use credit cards for my spending as much as possible for a few reasons. The key is that I view the credit card like a debit card, I track every dollar and I pay it off each month. This has changed my whole relationship with money.

Thank you for being open and honest about your debt history. When I finished graduate school, I was $18K in credit card debt (a lot of the debt centered around grad school expenses) and I needed to purchase a car. I buckled down and paid off all my credit cards and bought my used car with cash ($11K) all in 1 year. I lived with my mom to save on rent during this time. It was not fun particularly being in my 20s watching my friends traveling, shopping etc. But when I sent the last credit card payment, I felt financial freedom something I had not experienced in a long time. You did it before so you can do it again. I am cheering you on so that you can experience financial freedom again. Good luck!

The credit card game takes focus. Essentially you have to treat cashack cards like debit cards. Pay it off before the due date and keep your utilization ideally under 10% on each card. Keep a list of your cards and assign each a purpose if you have more than one. Grocery and gas are common categories. If you don't jet around the world you do not need a point card or any card with an annual fee and perks you can't use or convert to cash to help pay down your balances. Good luck!

My husband and I have gotten ourselves in and out of debt so many times it's ridiculous!! When we take the quick way out, like that time we did a cash out refi of our mortgage, the change never sticks. I learned that we have to go about it slow enough to leave a painful scar or else the change won't stick.

My suggestion is instead of a monthly credit score. Move that to quarterly but on the monthly portion you should use to keep track of your net worth? Which I think would be a lot more helpful and motivating. When you see from month to month, your negative net balance # is going lower. Which is a good thing!

Thank you for sharing. We have similar amounts of debt - and I have a plan to be debt free in 4 years, which is WAY shorter than I thought it would be! Don’t be too discouraged!

I use credit cards for everything to get the cash back. I keep an updated apple notes balance with interest rate highest to lowest and balance. I cross it off after it’s paid and if I use the card. I add it back. Then I add my installment loans from highest interest to lowest interest. This simple method has helped me a ton. Then I schedule all payments before my paycheck hits. 😊

Yup, I’ve gotten into and out of debt twice and this is my third time. Difference is that this time my income equals the minimum monthly payments (on top of rent, etc) so I don’t really have a plan on how to pay them off this time. I’m so mad for putting myself in a bad situation to where I can’t afford an emergency to happen. I have a few side hustles and am about to get a part time job bc this life is not for me.

Soo relatable, almost same story! Can’t believe i got myself in debt, but blessed to have a memes to take care of it. I just did a debt plan for 2024 it took me 6 hours to plan my year but I’ll be out of debt 95% before year end! Well except student loans, I don’t count that 😂 i wish everyone well & hope that everyone share their journey with their kids, family & friends!

I just love that you share your truth whether its good or bad. Don't let the look of your debt discourage you because you are doing something about it, effort is important. Every 3 months I write down my balances one to see my growth and two to remind myself that I have goals to achieve. I may even go backwards sometimes but I need to pick myself up and keep pushing to remove the debt. You got this! Keep pushing with Purpose and be intentional about it! May God Bless your Journey.

Might be a good idea to check what $ amount you pay for interest per month also. Those minimum payments won’t fully come off the principal. Helps with calculating time it will take to pay off

Thank you for your transparency. You are helping me and many others to get their debt in order and paid. I wrote my credit card debt down last week and my plan to repay. I have $20K so let’s inspire each other to get this debt paid off! Just like you I ran up some credit card debt during and right after college. I was able to consolidate and pay them off. Told myself I wouldn’t use credit cards again. It worked for a couple of years and then I started with one card for emergencies and now I’m back in credit card debt. We are human so we will make mistakes. Don’t be too hard on yourself! I will be following along with you working on my debt. Let’s go!!

Thank you for being transparent. I’m working on paying my debt also but closing accounts as well. Yes my credit will take a hit but with paying them off, the credit will rebound. I can’t keep them open because I charge them right back up. Only keeping my oldest card and will only use when I can pay it off monthly.

Good for you young lady. I'm 65, retired 10 yrs. and debt free since 2007. Financial freedom will make your life so much easier. And what I came to understand is how rich folks stay rich. The easiest way to pay off your debt is pay the minimum on the highest balance loans and pay off the lowest bill 1st. Repeat that for each bill and you can't go wrong. I put together a spreadsheet on my desktop, which made it super easy to manage. Once you reach your goal and start to save, let your money work itself. Make sure you have a wide portfolio and don't buy things that you can't afford...good luck to you.

Thank you 🙏🏽 so much for your raw honesty. I know that was hard. But this video is helpful to so many and most importantly, it was helpful to you! I thought the debt would be $10,000 too. A lot of people in high consumer debt hide in shame. But we are all human, not superheroes. Nobody is perfect. There are some “gurus” online bragging about how they have a lot stashed in savings/investments but not revealing their true credit card debt, their huge student loan payments, their huge car payments, their underwater mortgage, their high rent etc. That first story you told about the credit card debt was so relatable. I had cards maxed out and go into collections my 20’s and 30’s too. But I use my two cards responsibly now - in my 40’s. Not enough people talk about how bad credit is a prison and how it can adversely affect your life. I applaud you! 👏🏽 Great video!

Like many young people, I had zero credit when I first started out and it took a long, long time for me to build up good credit. Flash forward 15 years and I just went to a dealership today and was able to finance a brand new car with a good APR, no questions asked. It's a lot of work, but it's worth it! Stay the course!

Thank you for the authentic sharing. I am about to start this same journey. I and functionally deaf without hearing aids. I had to finance a new pair. Then my husband had to go through some extensive dental surgery. In six months time we racked up about $36k in debt and then I lost my main job. It seems like a major hurdle to jump but we did it before and I know we can do it again.
