So each thing is a pun. The rooster catches the chickens off their guard, and now the chickens are laying eggs. Cool cool, but then things go off the rails: The rooster catches the cow off guard, and then the cow starts giving EGGnog, a milk-based beverage. The gum tree is giving no gum, until the rooster came into the yard, then the gum tree starts giving CHICKlits (brand of chewing gum) The Waitress wasn't bringing any drinks...until the encounter with the Rooster, and now she's got loads of COCKtails to serve. That's it, it's a series of bad puns and silly impressions.

This is the real VoicePlay. This is what they're like with each other and you can see it in Butter too. The video is basically them taking videos of themselves horsing around. I swear, if they ever tour again I'm taking a sign to hold up that says "Chicken Song" on it. Can you imagine Cesar doing the waitress? LOL

This is one of those weird songs you learn as a kid as an introduction to puns. Chicken makes eggs = normal. Cow makes EGGnog = funny twist. Gum tree makes CHICKlets = technically inaccurate but still a silly pun. Waitress makes COCKtails = the point where the teacher knows which kids figured out puns and which have dirty minds, hahaha!

I forget whether you’ve done “This is Halloween” yet or not? If not, when you do, take note of the guys’ costumes when they open the door. Both Earl & Eli are dressed as their parts from this song. That intro doesn’t last long but it really cracked me up to see them in their Cow & Rooster onesies!

There is actually such a thing as a gum tree. It is called a Sapodillia Tree. The bark from this tree is called Chicle Latex. It is the Spanish word for gum. The Mayan's discovered it. The sap was used for other things too. So, the Chicle Latex has become a brand of gum we call Chiclets. They were tiny little pieces of gum that came in a small packet & so much fun to chew. I believe we still sell them in the US. This is the history of how we all got chewing gum.

Lots of American puns on chickens. It has been around about 90 years. Comedians and folk singers did it. About the same time was the song. 'I'm my own Grandpa.' Voiceplay hasn't done it that I know of but it is hysterical as well.

Actually I laugh so much that I cry. These guys are incredible. They take their WORK so seriously that, as you said, they can take a "whateverthesoundofaroosteris" and make it sound like a great note, and MEAN it. This is by far one of my top 5 Voiceplay songs. First time i heard it i was laughing so hard my dogs had to make sure I was alright. You should really check out the one where Tony got stuck at an airport and missed their performance; and a member from a different group (Paul) jump in and did the waitress. Great reaction! I love how each one of them puts their personality into their little character. When Layne prances out there I laugh every time. Just before Geoff announces the title of this song, you can hear a little kid in the audience whispering “it’s the chicken song” excitedly. They did a lot of touring in family friendly venues and this was part of their regular routine. It is also on their first album! When I first started watching VoicePlay I heard that they had gone under another name so I went on Spotify and found 4:2:Five. The first album had a lot of songs from my teens so I put it on to play. After about 40 minutes the Chicken Song came on. I had never seen this video. I was so confused! 🐓p.s. There is a parody of Ghost Riders in the Sky. (WAY different from Geoff’s Ghost Riders) Marty Stuart was an old country music star with his own show. This was a guest appearance. Marty can barely stand up straight he is laughing so hard. The best thing they did with Tony in it, is Phantom of the Opera. And he has the lead. Well, half the lead; Rachel Potter has the other half. There's also an older, incomplete version of the Chicken Song floating around out there somewhere, that doesn't yet have the fourth verse or some of the backup vocals. It might've been from before they renamed the group (from 4:2:Five to VoicePlay), not sure. (There's also a video of 4:2:Five performing only the first verse, but I don't think that's all there was of it at that point; I think the person filming the video didn't film the rest for whatever reason.)

The song is actually on their first album as 4:2:Five. It has a lot of old school rock ‘n’ roll that I grew up with. I saw the first few songs and they were from the 60s so I just played the album. Then The Chicken Song came on. I was so surprised. Only these guys would actually put that song on an album! 🤣

Tony isn’t in that many vids really. Phantom is the only one where he really took the lead, IMO. There are several “top ten” type of melodies, but for full length songs, I think it’s just Phantom, I Love Me, and Cheerleader. Now, there are recordings you can hear him on. I love their Aladdin melody. But not so much in the way of vids.
