On my surgery rotation at the moment. I had a patient on Halloween who turned out to have a really bad bowel perforation. It was honestly heartbreaking to have someone's abdomen open and realize how ill they truly were. We spent about four hours on stabilizing the patient for additional surgery in the coming week. As we finished clearing the bowel the surgeon said, "I know this is a pain in the ass guys, but if this was one of you on the table I would be doing the exact same thing". That comment stood with me and reminded me of the importance of the work we do regardless of our medical specialty. The humbling part about surgery is that you can actively witness a patient decompensate and die in your hands. If anything, surgery taught me the importance of preventing patients from having to go to the operating room in the first place. Because although it's interesting and fun, it's also a start reminder that there's a patient whose truly suffering from an illness that could've been prevented in the first place.

You hear this a lot, but you're truly inspiring. From someone with a similar background, I can't express how thankful I am to have been able to see a person who looks like me and from a similar upbringing achieve--and continue to--greatness. I start my cycle next year and figured I'd let you know you're one of the reasons I know it's possible!

Dr. Webb and Dr. Maita, as a pre-med student in my second year of college, I cannot express how impactful this series has been! I get so excited when I see a new episode of I AM DOCTOR and I soak in every single second of the show and get so sad when its over. It is so amazing to listen to two awesome physicians keeping it real, shooting the crap, and teaching and inspiring the next generation of healthcare workers and researchers. The fact that I am equally learning and laughing along with you guys is priceless, and I really hope that this series also inspires and motivates other people the same way it does for me, and I wish you two further success as you continue honing your skills as physician-entrepreneurs!

Y’all spitting facts about interest vs money vs lifestyle. You have to sacrifice something because there’s no ideal job. I’d say the most important factor is interest because if you hate doing what you do, it will affect your well-being. No matter the pay or other perks. And yes, people ignore this critical advice all the time and live miserably because of it.

Quite interesting & informative episodes. I like how Dr. Maita thinks. He does not seem to be an egotist. Dr. Webb did he really win that hand combat? Love the camaraderie between you two. Everyone should realise that although the surgeon/s is/are performing the procedure, it takes a cohesive team to attain the preferred outcome. Hope you both could celebrate Halloween with your family!!

Your videos are absolutely inspiring. I could spend hours watching you. I am just wondering....I was never initially in the medical field, I got interested after my grandmother was diagnosed with cancer. I went into nursing a bit blind, thinking there was more medicine and autonomy vs ONLY nursing. I am looking for advice, I look up to the doctors and am ALWAYS trying to listen and learn what the residents are being taught in the hallway outside of patient rooms. I am 30 years old, 2 babies and a wife. I want...so bad....to study my butt off, take the MCAT and at the very least, see how I score. I am just so worried my family life will suffer, any advice? I feel like I should made this decision BEFORE all of this but I just didn't know until recently.

They're lying. Most doctors have 9-5 hours and plenty of holidays while still being top 1% earners. A family doctor in Australia charges Medicare $40 for a 15 minute conversation with a patient. Theyre just sitting down on their chairs the entire work day (many are obese), sometimes getting up to examine you on the bed. Its only in residency or in some fields that you get the crazy hours, but that's purely a decision you make and you can always reduce your hours by chosing a different specialty and still make a ton.

You should never do medicine for the money. You pay back tons of student loans. Even if you make it to a high paying specialty, you will spend 5-7 years of residency training plus fellowships and by the time you pay off those loans you trying to save for retirement and it’s not worth it. If you want to make a lot of money do investment banking on Wall Street.
