Bananas are magical plants, like the hydra, you cut one and it's replaced by 2. I am growing an apple banana and was told it was a dwarf, and I don't think it's dwarf now. It is really huge. I also have a mystery blue java or ice cream. I started some loquats and crunchy green guava from seeds for fun. I am going to plant hundreds around my county because I don't know what else to do with them. I have 27 different banana clumps or circles, I don't know what they are called, but I am going to dig up the pups and only leave 3. I will plant the pups in the woods along with the guavas and loquats. I hope I'm not breaking the law, but I have a strong desire to plant food everywhere.

Awesome! All tropical fruit is amazing to grow, but IMO from a self reliance perspective, Dwarf Bananas have to be my top choice, and if I could only grow one Tropical fruit it would have to be Bananas. Yes there are more delicious fruits than Bananas, but most other tropical fruits don't provide much calorie value, whereas Banans can be used as higher calorie starch food like Potatoes as well as sugar. Avocados would be my top choice if they were as easy to grow as Bananas, but Avocados take more effort and care and easily die if conditions aren't just right. Citrus is my 3rd choice. If I can grow Bananas, Citrus, and Avocados, I'm a happy Man. Any Tropical fruit I can grow beyond those are cherries on top of the Sundae.

In my climate the top staple fruit trees are avocado, banana/plantain, coconut and breadfruit. You could easily feed a whole family year round on very little space with those. Add in some chickens for eggs/meat and you got all the essentials like fat, carbs, protein.

I was given Raja Puri so I've been growing that variety, and I'm satisfied with it. I like how strong, sturdy, and lush the plant is, and I guess it's considered a dwarf, as it produces fruit before it gets too tall. It blossoms in about six months so it's only like one year total from planting to harvesting bananas. The flavor is very good, very similar to Manzano, in my opinion. The second variety that I just planted is Goldfinger because I had heard so many good things about it. As far as I know, it grows in a similar fashion to Raja Puri, but I'll let you know. I'm glad you're back on the banana wagon, Paul. I love banana plants for their looks, too, as well as the flavor of non-supermarket and homegrown varieties. I mulch heavily like you, Paul, and feed them green-juice-pulp (my wife is a juicing fanatic), which seems to be a fertilizer that they thrive on. I'd happily give you (or anyone else in Dade/Broward/Palm Beach) pups when I have them if you're interested. I've grown Dwarf Red in the past, which is a beautiful plant, but the flavor is a little on the strong side (similar to Dwarf Brazilian?), and you probably wouldn't like it. I've always felt that if you live in SoFlo or SoCal you should grow bananas. Commercial bananas just aren't the same.

Thanks for the video! I was wondering about the mulch, as a new fruit farmer I was confused about how close the mulch should go to the stalks. Since being too close could kill a mango tree I thought maybe that concept applied to bananas too but it looks like you have mulched right up to the stalk. Very helpful to know.

On Banana trees the mulch can go all the way up against it.

I grew mysores for a while; they produce a delicious fruit. My issue with them is they grew too tall and would easily break from the weight of the racks. I also found they produced an excessive amount of pups compared to my dwarf cavendish and dwarf namwa.

I’m growing Tropical trees in Melbourne Australia not the best climate in Australia 🇦🇺 to grow Tropical trees as Queensland is the place to be in Australia for growing Tropicals. Love the channel as I’m always keen to see what your growing over there. We have a channel here in Melbourne called Real life Fruitopia that’s way a head of my trees of success of Tropicals growing in Melbourne. I think if I was to move to the United States 🇺🇸 Florida would be the place to be. I love Melbourne and Aussie Footy AFL to much in following the Richmond Tigers 🐅 to leave Melbourne. Queensland maybe the place some day to grow more Tropicals 🌴 Great Channel you have there. 👍

I have never liked bananas but all I have ever had was from a grocery store shipped here so I tried growing a RajaPuri in a pot the summer before the one we just came through but it got stem rot and someone here on KZbin said cut it down and it will grow back so I did but it never even tried to grow back so I think I'm going to have to have a place that stays warm enough all year where I can plant it in the ground because I don't like wasting money. Thanks for showing us.

They actually do not grow on a root ball, it is actually called a Mat! Dwarf Nam Wa is a star and there is a full size Nam Wah as well. Ice Cream (Blue Java) has always has been interchanged with Nam Wah but a true Blue Java is a much weaker plant with less yield potential as Nam Wah. It is irritating when nurseries take advantage of people and muddy up the lines. The true Blue Java have a silver green leaf, that is the indicator that you have an authentic Blue Java. Also the trunk is thinner then Nam Wah usually. Nam Wah will not bend over as easily as BJ and is a superior plant overall. BJ has an incredible flavor however and to me growing them close by each other, has a slight advantage in flavor,

I only do Dwarf Namwah now because I’m tired of spending all this time and energy growing tall varieties only to have tropical storms knock them down when they are heavy with fruit.

As I predicted a few months ago, it's looking like there will be a Huge shortage of Bananas in the coming weeks, which may last months, due to the Port Strikes. Bananas are most likely about to get REAL expensive or unavailable from the store. Mangos and other exotic fruit trees are amazing, but when the shortages and hard times arrive and peak, Bananas grown in Florida will be come one of the most important and valuable fruits to grow due their versatility and higher value as a food than other Tropical fruits, not to mention the ease of growing them. Hopefully this Port Strike doesn't last and just ends up being a wake up call highlighting the fragility of our Import system and the coming Banana shortage prompts a huge number of people in Fla and other Warm Southernmost states to become Banana growing States. People take Bananas for granted and wont realize it until they aren't available. I predict we will see a huge interest and uptick in Florida people growing Bananas due to the Port Strikes, but unfortunately there will be a 1-2 year delay before all the newly planted Banana Plants fruit.

My favorite banana so far has been the goldfinger, its a hybrid that was supposed to replace the cavendish if that gets too diseased. It's way better than the cavendish. Also a dwarf. I also have raja pisang (tall), praying hands(very tall) and manzano but I have not tried them yet. I was bummed about my tall namwa they are extremely prolific but the racks didn't seem to fill out very well for me, I am up in Tampa Bay and it seems every yr there is either a frost or a hurricane or this yr was a severe drought! Not good for bananas.
@TheChenny736 ай бұрын
Frost doesn’t hurt the bananas. Sure it burns the leaves but out comes new ones as soon as it warms up.
@inchristalone256 ай бұрын
@@TheChenny73 Yeah, I was referring to the fruit, I kept having something happen to the fruit. I finally ate some raja pisang, I didn't like them. We also finally got fully ripened namwa and it was very good, but actually I think I like the goldfinger more than the namwa. And my one mat of goldfinger has 4 racks on it right now! So still very prolific.
@TheChenny736 ай бұрын
@@inchristalone25 I tried Goldfinger but they get the black fungus disease on them causing leaf drop. Namwah, Orinoco seems to be immune.
@inchristalone256 ай бұрын
@@TheChenny73 Oh really? Where do you live? My goldfinger is very healthy, maybe yours is in a bad spot? I think using a lot of compost under the banaans is key to disease resistance. I even use urine instead of commercial fertilizers. That's how I got 4 racks!
@TheChenny736 ай бұрын
@@inchristalone25 bad spot? Is there such a thing? I’ve got plenty of Orinoco and Namwah…no problems. Where do I live? Dunnellon. If your plants get infected it won’t matter how well you feed them. Black fungus forms at the leaf base and eventually causes all the leaves to drop. Certain varieties are very susceptible I like to stick with the ones that are bullet proof.
@inchristalone25 Жыл бұрын
Ice cream is the same flavor as dwarf namwa, it's called tall namwa, every nursery sells tall namwa instead of the true blue java as that is not being propagated as tissue cultures. And they are extremely prolific, I just took out three clumps and nearly destroyed my back digging out the 50 lb corms.
