To me, it just isn't a good adaptation of the book (a separate question of being a good film), if they don't put in the twist in the end. It's literally the title, after all, and the twist made the book a classic. The idea that no matter how right we think we are, we might just be a monster to someone, is a compelling and worthy thought. Point of view is a powerful thing. Yes, that includes the final line, "I am legend."

Maybe you should include the Heston movie Beneath The Planet Of The Apes in this comparison. Basically, its the same movie. Heston is the "last man" on Earth (except maybe that other Johnny-come-lately Heston looking guy), gets captured by the vampires/zombies/mutants/whatever, listens to their twisted logic, then everything ends in a cataclysm. Nova is kind of the Ruth part, not a mutant, not a human in the same sense as Heston, not an ape. The apes are a differentiated kind of vampire/zombie/mutant/whatever. I am also thinking Bride of Frankenstein might be on this list. The monster is the "last man" or only man on Earth, the regular humans are the vampires/zombies/mutants/whatever, and the bride is Ruth, somewhere in between the monster and humans. Everything ends in a cataclysm. Sure, these movies are not based on the novel at all, but they tell the same story.

Thanka for the nice breakdown offering a fun chance to go down memory lane (although I am Omega might be best forgotten!). How did you get "Giant Lakes" from "Langostas Gigantes?" Not that "Giant Lobsters" makes any more sense... Oh, and Soy Leyenda, the protagonist is writing in the journal something like, "Is it possible that the germs that kills the living animate the dead?" And "Today they arrived at 6:44, two minutes earlier than yesterday." Not exactly super-scientific, but the kind of notes and observations a science-minded person would make. The Omega Man is far and away my favorite of these films that i have seen (yet tonsee Soy Leyenda), despite its flaws. It is a very inventive adaptation and avoided the re-use of the hackneyed vampire trope, while riding the at-the-time popular "bacteriological warfare" trope. I am eager to see Soy Lelenda version. Thanks again for turning me on to it.

Smith's version actually touches on a lot of this, just, a lot of them were kind of vague. For example, the other hallucinations were him shooting Frank because he got outside and he thought the other one waved at him. The girl unintentionally betrayed him by bringing him to his house during the night time. He doesn't have a pit, but he indirectly but directly burns them by jumping out the window for most of them to be burned by the sun. He is technically captured when his SUV flips after he gives up on trying to save them (suicide pill?) before the woman shines her UV lights. I feel like there was a garlic scene when she was cooking breakfast after Shrek, but, Im not sure. I could be confusing it with Hancock.

For the 2007 "I Am Legend" film, they released these animated shorts that are Canon to the universe. One of them revealed that when the virus was spreading at a scary rate, the American government or United Nations ordered Black Ops teams to invade medical camps with infected and possibly infected people in poor neighborhoods and villages. When they were done shooting them all dead, they burned all the corpses with incinerator type hand grenades. It might be a reference to "the Pit" in the original book and a few of the movies. But either way, it wouldn't make it to this list, since they never mentioned these in the movie. At best, the flashback scene when they denied the infected people access to the city's exit. But I don't think symbolism counts here. I have a small theory that Keanu Reeves' character for the sequel might be one of, or at least used to be, one of the Black Ops soldiers who committed such atrocities. I would like them to reference classic Vampire killing weapons in the sequel. Like these soldiers having belts of stakes, like Marvel's Blade. Burning corpses of the infected. And very unlikely but the infected avoiding garlic. Sorry if I ended up muttering.

I personally like the Vincent Prices and Will Smith Movies. That scene with Vincent breaking, might look like over acting to some, but I rather feel that hysterical break drown, is much more realistic than perhaps many realize. I prefer the alternate Will Smith Ending. I think "Chuck's" film is most likely a cash in, from his sci-fi fame in Planet of the Apes. Which is a masterpiece, and probably shows Charlton at his best. That said, I strongly agree with the point given to Omega man for the loneliness. That scene playing chess, is actually one that stuck with me. The TV Series: "The Last Ship" follows a very similar plot. One might argue the Film: "28 Days Later" is a variant of this story as well. If not "War World Z", which has striking similarities in characters and story arc. The actually titled TV Series comedy "Last Man on Earth" (Will Forte and Kristen Schaal), also appears inspired by the story, though more in the first series. (Though it forgoes the "Zombies"). I think it could be argued, that Series 1 of the Walking Dead, stems from "I am Legend", and that "The Last of Us", is a further evolution of this story in many ways.

A suggestion for further film adaptions showdowns, especcially some, where the film adaptation is far better than the book, just like it is with I am legend.: - Let the right one in (two movies by now, as far as I know) - American psycho - La jetee (not really an adaption of a book, but then the original wasnt referred to as a movie but as a photographic story) Also with various adaptions: - Ghost in the shell (based on a comic) - Appleseed (based on a comic)

1) Let the right one in - Never heard of it 2) American psycho - Yes! I've been reading through all Bret Easton Ellis' books this year and plan on doing a big adaptation showdown in the future on his books because his first 4 novels were turned into moves. 3) La jetee - Never heard of this one either 4) Ghost in the shell - Would include this in a future series "where the matrix came from" or something like that 5) Appleseed - Also never heard of!
@petermeyer68735 ай бұрын
@@couchbumkino5423 1) Let the right one in is a (dont wanna spoil it by telling the genre) story on friendship. The first film was made in scandinavia, the remake (Let me in) is from america. Both are good, but I like the first one more because of the brilliant acting and choices of actors. Unfortunately, the english dubbing of the scandinavian version allmost ruins it. Like with american psycho, the films focus on the story essentials and leave out the disturbing stuff from the book. 3) La jetee was an SF short film. The story was later expanded heavily into the movie Twelve Monkeys. 5) Appleseed has a twisted story on ethics, that has in the end both the protagonists and the viewer asking themselves whether it really has a happy ending, as the failing antagonists may all have had a better goal to team up for even though for very different reasons.

Fun Fact: It is doubtful that Bram Stoker even knew about Vlad the Impaler, so it is unlikely that his rendition of vampires was based on Vlad, and it probably was just a coincidence that Bram's story took place in Transylvania. It is believed that Bram chose Transylvania simply because of its reclusiveness, name, and mystery. It is believed that Bram's vampire creation instead came from old Scottish, Nordic, or Druidic fairytales.
