As a cosmetic chemist. If its crystallisation or separation its still unacceptable. They should be doing stability studies to ensure this does not happen.

I think it’s because of the newer “paraben free” trend that’s going around. There’s a whole lot of misinformation about paraben being “toxic” when it’s not. It’s one of the oldest, most effective & most tested preservatives for cosmetics. Companies want to fit in with the clean beauty trend (which has no actual regulations or standards btw) and end up excluding important ingredients. Whatever preservative they replaced the parabens with must have been a bad one if products are mouldy.
@fran791

There are way worse ingredients like ptfe (teflon) in eyeshadows and highlighters. I have seen ptfe in the kaleidos highlighters, the pat mcgrath eyeshadows, the urban decay eyeshadows and some other brands I can't remember. Like that stuff is a known toxic ingredient that's about to get banned in europe, it shouldn't be in makeup. Parabens tho are relatively safe in low percentages

I also have a lot of eyeshadow palettes and none of them have this issue. It’s so sad cuz this stuff is expensive like 12 months isn’t enough to get your money’s worth. Also this also shows clean makeup isn’t always the best like they put some safe chemicals there to prevent exactly this!!

@@rachelforshee6014 what does "telling the difference between water and chemical waste" have to do with the point that everything is a chemical? when "clean" products say they're using avocado extract - they're not just putting a whole ass avocado into their product (at least I would hope they don't), just as not "clean" brands do. they're still using the "bad chemicals" most of the time. Mould is a fungus that feeds on organic materials and likes moisture. Probably why the matte shades aren't having the issue so much, because the formula is dry. Often, the preservatives in eyeshadow are the same preservatives used in eye drops. These eye safe preservatives are clinically proven to not harm your precious eyes, mold and fungus, on the other hand, certainly could. Which is why I don’t buy “clean” makeup that doesn’t use eye safe preservatives. Also, gross! You should hang onto the palette and check it every week or so, documenting the growth of the icky-ness. 😊

I believe the reason why old palettes aren’t molding like new palettes is “paraben free” was a marketing ploy back then. Parabens are chemical preservatives that was typically found in everything cosmetics but not “clean beauty” is a thing so everything is just molding quickly because of the lack of preservatives. Not everything that’s “clean” is a good thing and not all chemicals are bad. Bring back the parabens!

Mold is not a plant. And while it could be mold, more likely there is wax in the formula that was not emulsified properly. Sometimes wax in cosmetics will separate out and look like little white chunks, or like the white wax bloom you see on chocolate bars when they get old. Still an unacceptable quality control issue for a product that expensive, but may or may not actually be unusable. You’d need to look under a microscope lens to tell for sure.

They also give their ticks completely inconsistently. I mean firstly, nothing with fragrance should be on any kind of good for skin list. Secondly, every single product they claim to be fragrance free on Sephora Australia has fragrance in it. They're not capable of detecting that. I'm not even talking about essential oils or flowers/fruits but straight up "Fragrance" or "Flavour/Aroma" they miss. I dislike the "clean" beauty people so much. This is why I go through and check all my makeup about once a year (not blaming you, just a warning/advice!). I don’t listen to expiration dates either and have some makeup that’s like 8 years old, but I’m vigilant to any signs that it’s gone bad. Mold fuzzies/bumps like here, random discoloration, changed smell, changed formula, suddenly breaking me out, etc. I just recently went though all my lipsticks; swatched, inspected, and sniffed them all. I threw out 12 because of weird smell, they were completely separated or dry, or one looked a weird texture in the tube. Thankfully out of +40 eyeshadow palettes I’ve only ever had to throw one away from mold; it was the BH cosmetics zodiac palette at around 4 years old. Stay safe!

The open container with the number and letter in it on the back of the packaging i.e. 12m or 18m, etc is the time frame I pay attention to. That number and letter is a PAO, the Period After Opening the product should be good for. If an item's shelf life is 12-months, that means it expires in 12 months even if just sitting on a shelf (hence, shelf life) in the factory. Anyway, I was saying I pay attention to the PAO because I have sensitive skin and there are some makeup items/ingredients that irritate and breakout my skin. When looking at my palettes, I look to see if it looks the same, the texture hasn't changed, the performance hasn't changed, etc. Regarding mold, if it's seen it's already been there growing in the product. Mold doesn't form and is noticable overnight or a few days.

Another KZbinr I watch found mold in her Major Dimensions II palette. Pretty sure it was one of the two darker shimmers on the top. Seems to be primarily that palette having issues which is surprising since it was the newer one at the time. So the person reached out to Patrick Ta's Customer Service and they gave reasons why it could be blooming due to storage and temperature. Most makeup lovers know to keep makeup stored properly so the answer was total bs and that was the end of the conversation. I've lost all interest and respect for the brand. Take ownership of the quality control issues, refund customers, and be better. Overall silence is not the answer. I know natasha denona has palettes that have cream and powder products mixed in one palette - I wonder if there are issues of mold in them - if not it sounds like it's purely on Patrick Ta

Almost 40 years of makeup hoarding and never had any moldy eye shadows! I actually have many loose pigments from 20 years ago and many palettes over 10 and they are still as good as new and don't give my skin any reaction. Keep your powder makeup as long as they don't start to change their consistency or smell. Other makeup I manage to use up as I don't need to have more than 1 foundation, powder, blush etc at a time.

I guess the pellets named appropriately! the word dimension as a noun means; An aspect of a feature of a situation, problem or thing. The major dimension palette’s Cream shadows add a lot dimension of Major mold

I thought I was the only one to experience this! 😅 Last year in July, I decided to try out Patrick Ta and bought the MD2 palette ($70 😵‍💫). Within 3 weeks I exchanged it at Sephora. I only used it a couple of times before this thick and gray layer of fuzz appeared on the deepest metallic shade😖 Nothing like this has ever happened to me before. Luckily I got something else without a problem. I opted for a completely different brand and I can happily say there is no weird fuzz in my Huda Naughty palette 👍🏼

I'm not much in the beauty scene so without you I probably never would've heard about this issue. Even though I don't own a Patrick Ta palette, this video was still a good reminder for me to check on my eyeshadows and if they're still good. Also have never seen what mold would look like on a shimmer shade so had a TIL moment there

woooow I have the countour and bronzer duo from Patric Ta stashed away in my makeup draw , I haven't opened it in months and have had it since 2021...scared to open it now! I was tempted to get the new matte pallete but am going to skip. Like you I keep products for years, take good care using alcohol spay, scrapping the top layer of lipsticks ect and never have issues with any eyeshadow before... I even own some OG MAC limited products from 2010s era that are totally fine. "Clean" beauty and skincare enage in a lot of fear mongering of perfectly safe ingedirents that serve a solid purpose in formulas like silicones and preservatives.

Thank you for making this video, it prompted me to check mine and eww. Something is seriously wrong with that first metallic shade on mine. It looks like there is a dusty green substance covering the whole surface of it. I’ve had it for just under 10 months. I’ll be going to Sephora tomorrow to show it to them. No more Patrick Ta for me thanks.

Oof I'm glad I have never purchased anything from Patrick Ta because the mould growing on the products that quickly from purchase date is really concerning! 😬 Especially considering how expensive the product is and how many people spent their own money on it for the product to then become destroyed like that. Not great for a makeup brand tbh, especially a high-end one. I still have my Urban Decay Naked 2 and Naked Smoky palettes from 2016 and they are completely fine, and I still also have Illamasqua, Hourglass, and Kevyn Aucoin powders from 2016 that I am using up and they're completely fine. I've recently got into makeup again after a hiatus and have purchased a bunch of Natasha Denona palettes so I hope they'll be okay and last for years. I keep all my makeup in my bedroom and away from humidity or moisture. I specifically purchase powder products with the intent that they'll last me for years, so it's good to know which ones don't. Thank you for posting this video and giving us a heads up (and saving a bunch of us from spending money on something which might become mouldy).

it's honestly highly unlikely that it's mould, you'd also be able to see if it was any type of fungus. It's probably just ingredients separating, which also shouldn't happen but it will due to temperature fluctuations

I have the 1st Major Dimension palette. I bought it in February from a friend and it is still good. A palette go bad in less than a year and a half is outrageous. I have a Naked 2 palette that my dad got me in November 2016 and is still intact, perfect (no mold, no bad smell, no weird texture).

I had the same problem with this palette. Mine was 7 month when it happened. I contacted Patrick Ta support but they didn’t help me because I’m in Europe. After that I wrote to CultBeauty support (I bought it there) and they said they need to investigate this issue. It was in May’22. In August (after my several messages) they finally answered and told me that their investigation showed that it’s not mold, it’s emulsified wax and it’s safe to use on the lids. I requested the link to investigation but they closed my request. I wrote again but they told me that they will investigate my issue. It’s October now but no answer😂 So now I’m not supporting this brand😑

I still have eyeshadow palettes that I purchased in or pre 2016 and have never had any issues with mattes or shimmers in them. I recently bought myself new ones as they're a bit old now but no mold or anything funky for that matter! It's absolutely shocking that the customer services of Patrick Ta and all the outsources like Sephora are just ignoring the issue and being so plaze about it. I hope anyone who has had any problems gets their money back and that Patrick addresses this because it's disgusting.

I had the same issue - eventually you even showed the picture in the video that I posted on reddit. I contacted the Patrick Ta customer service and asked them if I can get compensated and what they will do with this situation (eg. How they will improve the quality): the customer service agent simply said that since I am in EU, they will not compensate me and “there is nothing much to do here, sorry”!!! Simply disgusting behaviour!

I have mac makeup made with good old parabens that are almost 20 years and I can still use then. That is why I still try to buy those made with parabens. The new chemicals that try to replace parabens are irritating to the eyes. Remember if palettes do not last like the old ones, we have to buy more!!

I literally just threw out my Dimensions I and II palette a few hours ago, after seeing this video bc it definitely looked mold, especially the shimmers. I’m so sad about the other two though bc they weren’t cheap.

Makeup should be stored away from direct sunlight, in a cool environment. Humidity can be a huge contributor to causing mold. Sanitize your products often and clean your brushes. It’s important to keep them clean, in order to avoid skin breakouts & infections. I’ve never seen eyeshadow mold before. 🤢 This helps. Thanks for sharing!!!
