I actually have a theory about this, Linus. Currently it's late 2021. This might sound like "uh, current year, hurr durr", but this is actually a rather crucial point to my theory. It's now 2021, that means we've had an entire generation be born, raised, and grow up into adulthood, "by the Internet" similarly to how the Cold War generations were raised by TV. Have we ever considered the possible effects this could have on people's developing social cues? Their primary means of communication with people around the world has been text on a screen, where tone doesn't naturally come through. Is it not possible that this would lead to an underdeveloped understanding of social cues? I don't think it's an accident that online discourse has gradually gotten worse as the 2010s progressed. It would be this decade that people born in the early 2000s would be getting freer access to the Internet. Before the age of 10 (ish) most kids likely wouldn't have full internet access. So I don't think people _can_ discern tone and frankly, Linus, when someone can't discern tone they will more likely assume the worst intentions in people. It's likely a defense mechanism.
@zacharyyyy3 жыл бұрын
I definitely think the average persons social skills are lower than they used to be as a result of the internet and think this may be 100% true. another thought is just people like to find reasons to see the worst in people these days and get offended. @pieceofschmidtgamer3 жыл бұрын
@@conchayftw That's not really a solution. Social Interactions isn't something that can be taught in a school. It can really only be gained through experience. This is actually a massive problem with all content creators and their audience period. Over time I've started to be able to see the cracks in the on-screen character of the people I watch, and once you do the character becomes more well defined. Understanding that difference is critical to maintaining whatever the hell a healthy parasocial relationship looks like. And I really do believe that you can have a healthy parasocial relationship, it's just that we have not a single example to mimic or book to read about how to make one

I also am a Canadian and people do not understand my dryness when telling my self despair-aging jokes about myself. They always just tell me to stop being so hard on myself.

That hole event of linus sleeping on the office and someone throwing water at him while someone else is recording sounds like it could be real in a channel super fun short.

The only thing I assume is that if there is a chance for Linus to drop something he will .

I think it's a result of social media's prevelance. Some people have this issue with (often clearly fake) reality TV shows, but there you have a clear precendance set (i.e asides and intercut interviews) that don't ever show up in homegrown social media content. A prank channel, for example, may be doing stuff that would normally be awful, so the only reason you can really decide that it's rehearsed to any extent is that it would have very different consequenses without prior consent. Also, sarcasm is extremely nuanced, so it's difficult for some (not all) to tell what is and isn't genuine. I think that's why some people seem to despize it so much, as it tends to cause damage in the background to some extent.

"Why is this being filmed" is a mantra every person needs to repeat to themselves every time they watch something on the internet.

I think another part of it is that a lot of people struggle to understand and properly read body language. They tend to only concentrate on literal speech.

I think there is another reason, Linus seems like a really nice guy and even a really nice boss and there is this commonly held belief that most (if not all ) bosses are assholes and linus doesn't seem like a bad person and some people want to take any clip of linus not being the chill guy make it seem like this is his true self.

In fairness KZbin is a different format to traditional media where there was a clearer delineation between on screen persona and reality. KZbin, at least before the move to higher production values and standards in recent years, has felt more personal and grounded which, therefore, made judging whether the person in front of the camera was being completely authentic or not more difficult. Perhaps that legacy of the platform still informs people’s views on current videos. Although it’s just a theory…

Missing disclaimer: No Linus was insulted, injured or mistreated during the filming. That easy ;-)

This would actually be comical, something like: "No Linuses were harmed in the making of this film. Mostly."

I could easily see both Linus falling asleep in the office and Alex thinking throwing water on him would make a good video for Channel Super Fun

I feel like all I hear about lately from KZbin personalities can be summed up with “the viewing audience are not well adjusted” which tracks 100% with reality

I do a student radio show and my friends say that I act so different on the show, generally more boisterous. You will act differently when put in front of a camera, you make some jokes about who you are and put on a persona. It becomes dangerous when someone makes a parasocial relationship with someone's stage persona.

I think that last bit was an ad spot where Linus pranked Luke or something similar as requested by fans and luke just goes (and I'm paraphrasing) "I'm sick, I'm tired and overworked. I'm out.' I remember watching that and thinking holy shit. Turns out I'm gullible I guess.

You'd be surprised how many people have a hard time separating the on-screen persona with the real-life version of a human. I even struggle with it, especially since many viewers commit hours to watching entertainers.
