Carson Strong's knee injury has to do with the cartilage in between two of the bones in the knee detaching and causing the bones to rub together, obviously this is extremely painful. The surgery he got before his senior season was to reattach the cartilage using pins which wouldnt have been a long term solution anyway. The latest surgery he got was to insert a cadaver (replacing the cartilage that was detached) in the affected area. Apparently, this surgery has more of a chance to be successful than it does to fail. His body basically just needs to accept the insert rather than reject it for it to work out

You lost me in the 2nd half. Matt Corral’s arm strength, compact throwing motion, leadership, intelligence, pocket presence, accuracy, athleticism, and mobility are just as important, not to mention play against upper tier defensive talent that can be projected into the NFL. Certainly you can argue that the scheme isn’t NFL style football (with progressive reads) but look at all the guys who did come from those NFL ready schemes and failed when they got to the NFL. Moreover, you compared his stats against a guy who didn’t face nearly the same number of future defensive all pros. Not an apples to apples comparison.

Same.. it's all gimmicky, don't know how to translate it, and haven't shown the tools with Howell and Corral.. then throws up a graphic with Willis only attempting 16 more "pro style" throws than Howell with a lower completion %, yards per attempt, and worse TD/Int ratio. Not hating, but a little lost with the argument.

Anybody who rants about production for that long doesn’t know what to look for when evaluating QBs. I always laugh when they say “Corral threw RPOs 36% of the time how do I evaluate him??”. Like idk bro maybe look at the other 64% of his throws and see how he does?
@Saffold222 жыл бұрын
Agree with you wholeheartedly .. Scheme aside, Corral exhibits more than enough positive traits that give me confidence he can translate successfully to the NFL, especially when considering the consistent high-level of competition that he went up against in the SEC. The main thing that would concern me with him would be his health/durability to hold up at the next level, considering his stature and style of play. In terms of pure talent, I believe you could honestly argue him - with validity - against any QB in this draft.

Was your evaluation of Howell purely from film this year or did you watch some from last year as well? NC is technically part of the Air Raid tree, but they do a lot more with RPOs and pop passes. @nathancarroll73472 жыл бұрын
You said the 3 keys for fail rate were Physical tools, coachability and destination - but I would disagree with physical tools being a thing that causes QB's to miss. Looking at the QB misses from 2015-2019 we have: Jamies Winston Marcus Mariota Jared Goff Carson Wentz Paxton Lynch Mitch Trubisky Baker Mayfield Sam Darnold Josh Rosen Daniel Jones Dwayne Haskins I don't think any of those guys (outside maybe Josh Rosen) were misses because of their physical tools. I think when analyzing a QB's likelihood to fail it comes down to: Decision making Coachability/Development Looking at the list again here's what I believer were their biggest flaws as NFL starters: Jamies Winston - Poor Decisions + Didn't develop Jared Goff - inconsistent/Poor decisions Marcus Mariota - Didn't develop Carson Wentz - Injuries/Poor Decisions Paxton Lynch - Inconsistent + Bad work ethic (From reports) Mitch Trubisky - Didn't develop Baker Mayfield - Inconsistent + Destination Sam Darnold - Poor Decisions + Didn't develop Josh Rosen - Poor Work ethic Daniel Jones - Poor Decisions/Didn't develop Dwayne Haskins - Poor work ethic/decisions (RIP) Development seems random, and to some extent it is going to depend on where you land. some of these teams (Titans + Cardinals in particular) have since shown a track record of being able to develop other QB's, and some of these (Eagles + Giants) showed prior ability to develop QB. I think development is heavily tied to a player's work ethic and is in someway trackable through a player's college development. The guys on this list who didn't really improve as college starters: Jamies Winston (got worse in college) Trubisky (one year starter) Sam Darnold (Identical year 1 and 2's) Josh Rosen (Came in as a great freshmen... And stayed at that level) Daniel Jones (Stats are almost identical through 3 years) Dwayne Haskins (one year starter) To some extent, we could have seen these guys not developing coming. Again, this isn't to say that guys without much improvement in college can't be good pros - this is projecting who is most likely to bust. Which brings me to the top-6 QB's from this class and ranking them on how likely they are to bust: 1. Carson Strong (The injury concerns with Strong might take him off some teams boards all together. Clearly the most likely to fail because of his knee) 2. Malik Willis (Horrible decision maker on film, didn't improve from 2020 to 2021, 2-year starter but showed no ability to go through progressions) 3. Matt Corral (Didn't improve from 2020 to 2019, also showed little ability to read a defense due to the system he played in)4. 4. Sam Howell (Didn't improve between 2019 and 2021. Did have an improvement spike in 2020 w/ NFL talent, but dropped down to '19 levels in '21. I think Howell can be successful with great weapons around him, but can't be an elite QB) 5. Kenny Pickett (Showed development from '19 to '20 and took a leap in '21 with better playcalling + surrounding talent. Biggest concern is his decision making in the pocket with his feet. He bails from a lot of open pockets. 6. Desmond Ridder (Showed consistent development in '20 and '21, is a good decision maker with the ball and most of his concerns are about physical traits, which may limit upside but don't drop his floor IMO) So that's the list. If you want a bust-proof prospect, I think you go with Ridder. I think his upside is pretty low though. Pickett has some bust potential, but I think it likely to stick around the league as a replacement-level starter for a long-time. I think Sam Howell has a decent floor and you can win with him if you get talent around him. He also has a cannon arm that doesn't get talked about enough IMO. I think Corral is similar to Howell, but has shown less in processing/progressions that will need more development. Willis and Strong are boom or bust. Sometimes those guys work out (Josh Allen the most obvious example IMO) but they are also most likely to bust. There you go. My bust analysis on this class.

Have a hard time with the ‘’have not seen him make the NFL throws’’ and ‘’no left to right reads’’ when Brett has Willis as is no. 1. I could argue we have not seen a ton a of NFL reads from Willis in a piss poor conference. I love Willis, but to me there’s nothing in his tape that makes me think that he is (right now) a better QB than Corral. When I see Corral I see high-end mecanics, accuracy and unreal release… in a game that a the pro level is all about getting the ball out quickly. Now, can he make the reads quickly ? Maybe, maybe not. But is it not the same question with Malik ? I just feel people are overthinking this with Corral. Yes, RPO and fabricated numbers. But nobody has ever used numbers to gas up Corral. Always has been about mobility, arm talent (nicest in the draft in my opinion) and leadership. You are taking the gamble on if he can adjust. A certain team in the midwest took the chance with Mahomes. And one last point. Everybody ran that Fields to Olave bomb in the playoffs tape to gas up Justin as a top 1-3 QB in the draft. NFL throw this and NFL throw that. I never see mentions of that Corral out of pocket bomb against bama which the WR dropped. UNREAL pass. I think the team that grabs Corral will have fun with him.

Dude…it’s amazing that you can sound like you know what you’re talking about and be so knowledgeable and yet be so off so often. It’s truly a miracle.

Moreso than "coachability," I'm using the term "mental fortitude." There is actually a pretty intersting record of guys who were Academic All American QBs finding success in the NFL. I talked about this phenomenom more in depth in a Stampede Blue Fan Post. But, I think there is a strong correlation between the professionalism needed to succeed both academically and on the field in college and the professionalism necessary to succeed in the NFL. "Athleticism" (including both arm strength and mobility) then is merely the cap on a player's own ability to reach his ceiling.

Hey Brett, I wanted to get your thoughts on Cole Johnson out of JMU. He's 6'5, making him one of the bigger QB's in this years draft. He had a good year at JMU and reports of the Colts and Charger "loving" him have came out. Do you have a grade on him?

The stuff that translates to success for QB’s is very situational. Surrounding cast, consistent and good OC for at least first 2 years of their career, work ethic, leadership, what sort of scheme they’re in. So many variables where sure fire prospects turn into dumpster fires and guys you didn’t even watch tape on turn into all pros. It’s just what comes with the position. Appreciate your transparency and willingness to admit you’re not the best at evaluating QB’s. No worries bc you’re not alone😂

While yes. Ridder definitely has accuracy issues that are concerning when he jumps to the next level. That throw at 11:22 is beautiful. Perfectly placed and while he doesn’t always set his guys up for YAC or he sometimes leaves them out to dry. This is a great ball to sit his guy down in between two incoming defenders for a first down.
@bciwanted22 жыл бұрын
I trust zero of these QB's to lead a franchise honestly. At least out of the gate. If you don't sit these guys, don't draft them. Unless your second option is Mason Rudolph or something, like the Steelers. Less so but also the Falcons or Saints
@israel68192 жыл бұрын
I think ridder can, but also Pickett was apparently great in interviews at the senior bowl

About the concerns for corral and the high percentage of RPOs he throws, I feel like it shouldn’t be as much of a concern. The last time we had this type of concern was with Herbert. Corral’s tape is good and his physical tools are maybe the best in the draft. I think he might surprise a lot of people.
@ryanoliver56692 жыл бұрын
This is what we rely on these guys for to take the throws they did make and envision them in an NFL setting. Corral did that vs Bama and made NFL level throws. I like Brett but when you aren't even going to attempt to evaluate college offenses you just shouldn't be evaluating quarterbacks.

I cannot wait for your draft day coverage. I love your content. Obviously I don’t get paid for my thoughts, but I just want to talk about Malik. Your description of him could have described Drew Lock or even Jalen Hurts. You’ve watched far more tape than me, but when I see Malik, he can make every throw when it is drawn out for him. First read, he’s fine. It’s when he has to process and forced to throw with anticipation that he really drops off for me. Take the senior bowl with a grain of thought, but he will use his legs when he doesn’t feel comfortable throwing with anticipation. We can argue that is exactly what’s killing Jalen Hurt’s game (though I think part of that is Jalen being conservative as well). But I’m extremely low on Malik and Ritter. Higher in Pickett. Then again I was never a lawrence believer either. So :). Thanks for football analysis !

Thank you for mentioning the "where you go" argument for QB development. Many hindsighters have been criticizing teams for missing on their 2018 QB picks and skipping over Allen in the lead up to this year's draft. I for one fully believe that if the Jets for example picked Allen over Darnold, Allen would be in the same situation that Darnold is in now: a labeled bust starting to bounce around the league.

I said it when you did the video about QB draft picks in general. Just don't overthink it and you'll be fine. Because QB is the most important position, scouts and fans and media all spend so much time going over every single small detail that they find one insignificant wrinkle and blow it up onto something that lands Mitch Trubisky at #2 overall or Mac Jones as QB5

Great analysis. You sold me on Willis going at number 2 to the Lions. Your projected drafting for Ridder is less logical, though. You projected him going in the back half of the first round. The problem is that the teams needing a quarterback who can start early -CAR, SEA, ATL-are drafting at the front end of the round. The teams who already have a quarterback are the ones drafting in the back half.

@SLaird222 жыл бұрын
Nice work as usual Brett, I like that you don't double and triple down on your past draft takes like a lot of the talking heads on TV. Yeah, you thought Hackenberg would be good. Well, so did the Jets and they allot millions of dollars in resources to this. Every team misses more than they hit. One of my favorite things is reading mocks and in particular watching on TV and reading/hearing something like "this will solve their ILB woes!", like uhhh, it might but probably not. A lot of people like to act like they never miss - everyone who actually goes out on a limb misses way more than they hit. Shit I thought Herbert and Allen would be terrible, Herbert in particular. I think I compared taking him in the top 5 to malpractice. Ehhhh not quite. I'm on that same limb as not being a huge fan of Trevor Lawrence coming out. To me, there is a lot of negative groupthink on Kenny Pickett and I think he can be really, really good. One of your clips was concerning - @16:38 where he just doesn't even look at the deep post opening up for a TD and does the Baker/Darnold tic where they just run to the right. Could also be due to that arm strength thing you mentioned where he's not going to stand on one hash and drive the ball out to the other hash. I still agree with you that there is a chance that he becomes really good and surprises everyone just because of what he is good at. I love that Carson Strong is Drew Bledsoe. I don't know if it's going to work in the NFL but I hope his knee is ok and it does. I think Desmond Ridder is kind of like Deshone Kizer and nothing is going to allow him to overcome his inaccuracy. Matt Corral at Ole Miss was like the final boss version of the wildcat offense. He's like a fullback who plays QB. It's the weirdest thing I've ever seen and how can you even evaluate that other than just hoping for the best? I could see Bailey Zappe's NFL career going anywhere from Drew Brees to Duck Hodges. Malik Willis plays like he's going to lose his scholarship if he throws a check down. He's also not Lamar Jackson, no matter how many times people love to make that comparison (I'm not saying that you did). Lamar is on another planet athletically. I think Willis's best outcome is like a Russell Wilson, which, I mean yeah that would be awesome but you've gotta hope that a lot of things go right.

I like this approach! Very reasonable! Having said that... I think the red flags for Malik Willis outweigh his skills as an athlete. 100% agree on Ridder.

I think we are gonna see RPO's take off over the next few years in the NFL. Teams are starting to look at how to maximize their effectiveness which is actually just minimizing negative plays and it works very well.

The RPO revolution in the NFL was about five years ago. The result of it was the immediate proliferation of quarters around the league to handle it.

No offense I think your “new” criteria is still not good. I think Matt coral has the biggest upside in this draft and tbh I have him in the same take on him like I had on Josh Allen, Justin Herbert and Zach wilson. I think my track record with QBs has been good. Except Zach wilson he went to the jets the jury is still out but I think he’ll make it work.

So happy that Brett has reevaluated his thought process on Qb’s. Sucks that the guys this year are underwhelming, to put it nicely. He’s so damn good at player evaluations in general, easily one of my favorite draft guys to learn from. As a chiefs fan one of my favorite videos ever is the “I was wrong- Patrick Mahomes is ridiculously good” video. Unlike almost every other notable draft evaluator, he can admit when he got it wrong, even tho he’s mostly spot on.
@bilalmallick84282 жыл бұрын
Best predictor of success from what I can gather is, what is the QB rating, when under pressure. If you notice Burrows numbers actually improved when he was under pressure. Zach Wilson was hardly under any pressure at BYU, and the one game he was under average pressure against Coastal Carolina he looked average. Watch some old tapes of John Gruden sitting with Mahomes, and you get an idea of what NFL coaches are looking for.

Ridder at the number 2 spot is a bit of a stretch for me. But I wouldn't draft any of these guys in the top 40 unless im the lions.

I am a student at WMU and have gotten to see Eleby live. In my opinion he has a powerful arm but not always the accuracy under pressure. I agree the offensive scheme was lack luster. He is a great guy and coachable by all accounts tho.
