It caused me to create a new pricing structure. If you want ME to do the job...$75 an hour, If you want me to explain it to you as I do it...$150 an hour, If you want me teach you how it's done...$225 an hour. The other one is the people that bring a box of parts in because they decided they would take it up on themselves to tear it apart and try to fix it themselves first, and expect you to sort through everything and put it together just to figure out what's wrong, fix what they broke in the process of taking it apart themselves, replace the missing parts they lost in the process...then actually fix the $5 original problem LOL...oh and not charge them for any labor in doing so.

Hey Steve, a little story. I called a local tool rental/repair service to get a carb kit for a Tecumseh lawn mower engine and was told they didn't have one because Tecumseh went out of business 11 years ago, so I went to Amazon and found a complete carburetor for $11.00 plus S&H total cost $28.00. Replaced it myself and now my line mower ( powerful 2 wheeled weed whacker) is back in action taking down all the tall un-mow able grass. The head takes 140 gauge(I think) 22" string line folded before attaching to the trimmer head creating 4 strings to whack with.

Congrats Steve! I certainly understand your frustration. I’m a fleet manager for a landscape company and I hear it every time I’m in our local shops. They generally have a backlog of 2 weeks worth of potentially irate customers! And to think, I almost started my own shop at one point!😬 Of course I’m of an age where I can recall paying 89¢ for a spark plug, that was way back when $50/hour shop rates were considered highway robbery!😂 Bless’ns, you’ve earned it, Tedd

Way to go! Hope that means more time for your great YT content. One of my side hobbies is finding free non-running small engine stuff and fixing it up and selling it. It doesn't make a person any decent money, but as long as there is compression you can usually make a couple bucks on the deal, and it keeps the engines out of the garbage. I'd love to see more projects from you like that.

I tried dipping my toes into a side hustle in fixing cars, and someone was told about me, and in looking over their car on a repair, it was obvious he was gonna nickle and dime me - poor maintenance everywhere, and he wanted a CV boot taped up. And then he brought in the car to deal with a check engine light - running rich. I replaced his air filter. You could tell he was a little miffed because I charged him $40 for 5-10 minutes of repair. (his fuel trims went to normal when I pulled the filter, sooo). I stopped responding after awhile. And he wondered why his normal neighbor mechanic wasn't available much anymore....
