I am LIVING for you calling out Jay Kristoff! He has turned out to be so incredibly sketchy over the years! I love that so many of us are loving the Parasol Protectorate! All the love to Zoe for getting us all into reading it during the first Amazing Readathon. I'm glad you had some reads that you enjoyed! I haven't finished a single book yet this year. I don't know what's happening, but it's definitely not reading.

Happy New Year!!! There’s definitely nothing like getting home to your own bed after a long trip! Oh gosh, well, I started reading for TBRathon halfway through December… so far, I’ve completed 4 things and I’m currently in the middle of 2 and still nowhere near a bingo! I’d planned everything out perfectly to get 2 bingos and then just mood read instead haha. I’ll get there! And in the meantime, I’m having a great time! I’m so glad you talked about Jay Kristoff. I already knew about his problematic behavior and had heard people mention the problematic/gross things in his books, but I think the more people bring it up, the better. If people still want to read him, they should at least be informed. I really need to read something by Seishi Yokomizo! I’m so happy to hear you ended up enjoying that one!

Obsessed with you to friend!! Loved reading The Honjin Murders with you, it was a great experience. Heres to many more buddy reads 🎉 Im ordering Soulless now 😅 It will fit perfectly for February 'This one is for the bros'.... not me thinking how much I liked Empire of the Vampire 😂 though concerned about the problems around Jay Kristoff, its not something I had heard of before. Im pretty bad at keeping up with anything that happens outside of books... A shame about Everyone in My Family Has Killed Someone. Another book I had a lot of fun with 😅 we are so similar in reading tastes in some ways and sooo different in others

I've finished only two books this year, but both of them worked for all 3 challenges. I've made significant progress on several other books as well, so I'll probably have a flurry of finishes this next week or so.

Thank you for doing TBRathon. It has gotten me to make a really great start to my reading this year. That sucks "Everyone In My Family has Killed Someone" didn't work for you. I loved the second book. Would it be different for someone like me who doesn't read mystery and has no background for it? Ooo... gotta love a multi-world/multiverse book. Yay! Center square makes getting everything else so much easier.

I’m so glad that someone else thought Everyone in my Family Has Killed Someone was a poorly written book! I hated it so much - nothing made sense about the main character and you’re right, the reveals at the end were really dumb. I wish I got the love the whole series seems to have.

I've heard lots of issues relating to Jay Kristoff. I'm a fantasy reader but have avoided his books so far. What I've heard hasn't been great regarding questionable issues. We need to find you a chunky fantasy that isn't problematic 😂 I feel like you would like Paladin of Souls by Lois McMaster Bujold (Hugo winning book), but it's a companion novel to The Curse of Chalion, so I don't think jumping into it would be super easy (also it spoils the end of The Curse of Chalion - which you might enjoy as well). I've read them both and enjoyed them, and they have slight horror elements.

I’m glad to hear that you don’t like Kristoff. I was turned off him years ago when I heard that a 16 year old female spy in one of his books had a boob job done. I took all his books off my TBR after that!

I have a problem with authors who write inappropriate child scenes. I do my best to avoid people who supply the world with such reading matter. I know we are supposed to think “to each their own”. But when it glorifies something that is against the law…it is not for me and I won’t support those who create such content.

I’ve heard some questionable stuff about Jay Kristoff. I’ve only ever read anything by him that he cowrote with a woman and enjoyed that but I probably won’t ever read anything by him on his own. I’m reading Gail Carriger’s Finishing School series right now which takes place in the same world but follows different characters. It’s cute but it’s just making me want to reread The Parasol Protectorate because it’s so good!

Uhhh, Hunt the Stars sounds great. I'll def check it out! If you're looking for similar vibes (from what I can tell), you might want to check out Beth Revis' new series (I feel like maybe you already have😅) and also Nightchaser by Amanda Bouchet. The latter has a pet cat on a space ship 😂

🪐🪐From what i heard about Everyone in my Family Has Killed Someone, i really don't think the series would be for me. Like the whole self-aware wink-wink is something that really pulls me out of the story and it needs to be done really well in order for me to enjoy it. Idk how people read Kristoff, i tried to read Nevernight and it was the worst thing ever. It was basically ebony dark'ness dementia raven way in book form, seemed like it was written by a teenage boy. And also a 16yo girl, who is not like other girls, goes to assassin school and gets a BOOB JOB. But it seems like he still hasnt given up writing teens in creepy situations, can't say he isnt consistent.

Wow i think you are the only booktuber that said that in empire of the vampire are sex scenes with minors.. Thank you for that because male booktubers i follow never said a word and they all loved that series. Guy is sick i swear, he did it in his ya books and knowing that he also did it in his adult series is just sickening.

I found Parasol Protectorate to be very mediocre and dnf-ed it mid third book (could not with the Mr werewolf's cruel stupidity, tbh 😑) That being said, Lord Akeldama is one of the, if not _the_ most entertaining vampire character I have ever read about 😎He is just awesome ✨ and is the only reason I didn't dnf that series sooner
@leandrathetbrzeroКүн бұрын
I can see that! I know someone else who DNFed after how Changeless ended, but I find the relationship between Lord Maccon (Mr Werewolf 🤪) and Alexia to be very sweet and I could see why the author handled the very of-it’s-time conflict that occurred within their relationship the way she did. I 100% agree that Lord Akeldama is an AMAZING character!

I’m with you on Jay Kristoff. Won’t be reading him because he is awful, but also I tried to read Illuminae before cause I love mixed media and it was uncomfortably bro-ish and racist. Really disturbed about what you said is in Empire. Wild how accepting people can be of some stuff. I don’t get it.
