@@artyd42The episode is one of the finest episodes of Capaldi’s run, if not one of the finest in all of DW. Extremely experimental episode that really shows the lengths the doctor will go to in order to protect his companions. It's an intimidating line - but only until you think about it for a moment. He's practically telling _everyone_ what _everyone else_ is now thinking, making everyone realize that he's trying to set up a stalemate. He's essentially failed at Theory of Mind, the "I think you think that I think..." aspect of it. If even one of all his his enemies up there does _not_ fail at that, this whole speech would have actually _helped_ them and sped up the first attempts (if their plan hadn't been what it was anyways)

@@morphicresonance4015 Writers ran dry, in my opinion. 12 had a good few episodes but it mainly felt to me like they were focusing the stories more on the overall universe instead of The Doctor, so I've barely watched any of 13's run. That being said, based on his (very brief) appearances in the trailers for 'Last Night in Soho' and now that 'Morbius' looks interesting, I'm looking forward to what Smith is up to. Hopefully he channels some of this version of "madness" from being The Doctor into those roles. /There is precedent for a Doctor going on to be a truly terrifying Marvel villain (Tennent as Purple Man in Jessica Jones was...so perfect and so, so horrible). I think it's something about the charisma required for the role and how the character walks the line of good or bad...it just depends on if you're with or against him, which is always the best character.

@@asherikamichaela8425 Honestly his escape was quite the timey wimey sort of thing. When you consider he was locked up without any gadgets. And he somehow got his hands on River's Vortex Manipulator ... from within the securest prison made for him? Without River's help (she was locked inside the exploding TARDIS). Sure time works differently, it's more like a big ball of Wibbly Wobbly Timey Wimey ... stuff. But still how did he get his hands on the Vortex Manipulator in the first place? Does anyone know? When you compare it to the 12th's two parter story "Under the lake/Before the flood", 12th improvised, got inspired by what he knew. He saw his future dead self, he knew the names it said and the order in which it did, made him act (when it came to Clara, he was forced to think of something to safe her), so basically his future dead self inspired him, made him come up with a plan (which is, what the Doctor usually does, the planning on the go, and the Doctor is good at that). But how to explain the Vortex Manipulator? It's not like the future self could give his past self the VM, could it? Time doesn't work like that, does it? River's VM has to come from somewhere first. Oh well. It was used again later in "World enough and time/The Doctor falls" with both Masters and the materialization circuit.

He pulled that trick the first time in The Library against the Vashta Nerada - and it worked. After that, he kept pulling it until it became a crutch. And then it became more than a crutch, it became a weakness, a vulnerability - as his enemies became so terrified of him they joined together to destroy him. Twice. Once here, and once at Demon's Run (and its associated child assassin/The Silence conspiracy). After that, editing himself out of history became the only safe move...

I think that this moment perfectly encapsulates The Doctor's power and presence. Of Course, it's just a fake out to try to lure The Doctor into the Pandorica. But just this scene at it's own is marvelous. It delivers just how threatening and imposing The Doctor can be even when he doesn't have anything to back him up. It just takes me back to the 1° Season Finale of the Series Revival, Bad Wolf when The Doctor has this rather awestrucking exchange with The Daleks: Doctor: "I'm gonna save Rose Tyler from the middle of the Dalek Fleet. And then I'm gonna save the Earth. And then, just to finish off, I'm gonna wipe every last stinking Dalek out of the sky! " Dalek: "But you have no weapons! No defenses! No plan! " Doctor: "Yeah. And doesn't that scare you to death?" I personally think that this is The Doctor at is finest. When the odds are completely against him, when he doesn't have anything other than his own intelect to help him. His is still The Doctor, the man who can make entire armies run away just with the mentioning of his Name.

But he got a plan and a back up. He had Captain Jack and Lynda (with Y) and that thingy from Boom Town, the extrapolator, or whatever that was to power up the TARDIS shield. +MercuriaObscura Matts best 3 moments were this speech, his Rings of Akhaten speech and his regeneration speech
@MercuriaObscura
@MercuriaObscura 9 жыл бұрын
couldn't agree more about this & Rings of Akhaten but the regen speech (and the whole episode, for that matter) was kind of rambling and all over the place, I feel. I don't really remember any single line, like Ecclestone's 'You were fantastic' or of cause Tennants 'I don't wanna go'; rather, its the image of the bow tie falling that stuck in my head. Well, perhaps Capaldi gets another good last line... That would have the additional bonus of giving him one good thing to contribute at last. Only two more seasons - we could get ourselves a likeable doctor again in 2018, hurray!

This is an incredibly awesome moment in Doctor Who, to be sure. But it's somewhat humorous what's actually going on. Tennant was the most human of the Doctors, but Smith was arguably the most epic and grand. This is why I loved Eleventh. I’ll always love the different perspectives of this scene. The Daleks, Cybermen, Sontarans and all of the others are under the impression the Doctor is going to destroy the universe, they’re the Alliance and want to stop him. While the Doctor thinks they want to take the Pandorica for some other more dangerous means, and he has no idea about this prophecy to come. The speech is really great, and it works in both meaning to both incriminate the Doctor further for the aliens, and also look like he’s defending the Earth at the same time.
