I believe Mark Hamill was the only one told what the actual line was, and even on set and in the script they said that Obi-Wan was his father. So his reaction seemed off for everyone else on the set if I'm remembering the story right. Everyone else basically found out about the spoiler only after the line was dubbed in I guess.

​@@R2Bl3nd I believe the original fake line was that Obi Wan actually killed his father. Mark Hamill has an interview about it with Graham Norton where he recounts the whole story. It's actually a really funny interview and I highly recommend watching it if you haven't; my favorite parts of it were Mark's account of Ford's reaction to the twist and when Lucas and the director (the only ones who initially knew what the line was really going to be) decided to tell the line to Mark (so he would know how to act) telling him that if the twist came out before the movie did they would know it was Mark's fault.

It is crazy to think about the guts Kershner, Kasden, and Lucas had to basically flip everything from the first movie on it’s head…where Bespin looks like Heaven in the clouds, then a large chunk of the end is seemingly the characters “descent into Hell”…as you go from beautiful sky and city in the clouds, to dark reactors, dimly lit carbon freezing chambers, and the city’s air shaft…all the while, Han gets frozen, C3PO gets dismembered, Luke gets his arm cut off and finds out that the face of evil is his father.

Even the story on how George Lucas even kept this plot twist a secret from the entire cast and crew is incredible during a time before the internet and spoiler leaks. The only people who knew about the line change while recording was Lucas, James Earl Jones and the recorder. Cause when they shot on set Lucas gave a script where Vader says "no Obi Wan killed your father" thus Luke's reaction..but when Lucas got Jones record the voice over he gave Jones the line to say "no I am your father". What's really confusing me about this is that Vader never actually says "Luke, I am your father". He says "No, I am your father". But in this clip he says "NoLuke, I am your father". Either they changed it at some point or this is edited... Interesting.

@Antaris Alduin Supposedly it was a coincidental error with the recording medium. My guess is that this was intentionally edited to spark controversy and create ViRaL ViEwS. I still have my VHS tapes from the early 80's which should have the original recording. My guess is if I go back and watch them, the line will be "No, I am your father".

it’s a glitch; you can hear the same flute from 0:16 when he says “luke”

@@yugen old cameras are really glitchy meaning when vader said "luke" at one point the camera accidentally merged audio.

Im so glad to have this on my Blu Ray and DVD Combo collection. I remember seeing the Words "I am your Father" on the captions. Epic and Nostalgic.
