The "cam part # only" gets me too when I'm wanting to answer a question or offer help and I don't know every shelf cam spec. Along with maybe getting just half the specs - and they're all important to understand the actual cam.

LOL - I enjoyed your Frankness in responding to those questions ! You are obviously right, especially in the WOT Dyno starting at 4k, maybe 3.5k. Now let me be the dummy for a second - In considering changes to my Gen 1 SBC in my 66 Corvette, I am ALWAYS considering responsiveness at Mid/Low range RPMs (let's say 1.8k - 2k) as a key criteria. I've heard it 1,000 times - "Cant do 'driveability' on the Dyno". I get it. But I still want some manner of testing to help choose Heads/Cam changes to gain in that PART Throttle Response at 2k RPM range. As of now - i just have to extrapolate from the dyno results we can get.

I was very impressed with the exhaust porting only. This shows that the intake to exhaust % is very much a major player on the flow characteristics of an engines performance. I wonder how high that % can go before it has a negative effect on the engines performance

Watching further and with regards to customers quoting part numbers rather than cam specs, the same thing happens on the forums. Not just cams but intakes or carbs or whatever. Unless you've been there and done that, the PN is practically useless. I don't recall the PNs of the cams I've HAD let alone a dozen popular grinds.

Your comments about specing cams reminds me of Carroll Smiths advice for specing springs(suspension). Tell your spring guy the your heights, weights and use then let him work it out, he's going to have forgotten more about springs than you'll ever know.

Pre covid, lead times on big industrial cast iron stuff [multi ton pieces] was like 10 or 11 months. I can't imagine what it is now... could cast iron heads ever make sense again? I mean, the premiums willing to be paid on some heavy industry items just eclipses what vehicle manufacturers would look at competing with and gas engines with iron heads may well be over.
@kevinclemence46612 күн бұрын
I can appreciate your reasoning for not porting cast iron. It should be said however that Charles Servedio is still sailing that ship. There's also one other reason why some of us might choose to port cast iron. That's what we had to start with (RHS Pro Torker and long since discontinued). It appeared to be a cost effective means of getting better heads although, admittedly, it may have not been the wisest choice. Like your vids Mr W.

Hmm last question/comment about loading the dyno at 2000rpm, race engines never run at 2000, they are designed to run at peak, so to build a max torque at a low rpm you are looking at totally different design parameters

good on ya. I suggest that a low lift cam can have long duration and a long easy nose lots of time in heavy vehicles you are already in low and need lots of throttle especially 73+ smoggers with no low end (however secondaries are not fully open most of the time

Love the videos. Can you comment on exhaust lobe opening, timing and lift. Example: How opening rate against cylinder pressure and spring pressure affects the valve train, valve and seat temperatures between a fast and slow opening profile, exhaust pulse intensity, cylinder blow down, valve lift vs spring pressure (can limiting exhaust lift result in slight power increase vs, high open spring pressure?) Closing profile effects on overlap and valve sealing (not bouncing). I can't find much info on this subject

You know what makes more torque say comparing to a LS size.. THE GM Holden has a vast torque range compared to Ls of similar sizes. i wish Holden/gm never gave up on their Holden engine for the LS because id believe it would with same rotating qualities and. Size and compression. Compete with the best push rod motors of same size. And sound better.

Yeh the head flows are vastly low . Compared to a stock ls head or a decent sbc
@Link-we8so2 күн бұрын
Ahh I'm not sure I agree with having a head that flows too much air for an engine. I'd like to see that test. I'm not saying you would get benefits but I don't think it would hurt. So long as the head design is good.

Got my popcorn! I have used his methods since before the infamous "128", as outlined in the original "How to Build Horsepower". I don't know if it gave me the "perfect" cam, But it always resulted in a very good cam. Wide range of engines SBC, BBC, 250 inline low compression six, Pinto 4 cyl, Always had strong torque over a wider than expected range and good mpg when the application was taken into account. (the 496 inspired by "Sledgehammer" got terrible mpg, but not bad when you considered what the performance was.) I am very curious to see how his design does in the contest. It would be nice if he was done optimizing his program for the LS... There will be those who will say he has said his program is not ready in order to minimize damage if he does not place well... I have no data driven response to that, so I will wait for results and learn along with everyone else.

I have a question about brodix spec heads. First a little history, if I may. I bought a car with a 410 built by an old imca builder from Penn. That has brodix spch heads on it. Can't even tell you comp ratio or cam specs other than they have a dome and it's a solid roller cam. My question. Have you ever followed spch heads and what did they do? Thanks for the info on advance. Keep up the great channel.
@lcxu10512 күн бұрын
We all do that.
@gothicpagan.6666 сағат бұрын
Why all the hang up on LCA. Only seems relevant while testing. Have the same spec engine with the same lobe profile, just have different LCA's set when your grinding a cam. Once you've understood what worked best, you then grind different profiles to give the valve events and lift values that the valve train will allow. Never understood roller followers until there was a need to grind a negative radii. on a lobe just after TDC to optimise piston to valve motion rates, can't be done with a flat tappet. Never stop learning

Have you ever ported a real deal Pontiac aluminum cyl head and if so what were the numbers thanks!
@marianoleonel891415 сағат бұрын
hi Eric? how are you? maybe I am wrong, but not necessarily, with a fixed cam duration more lift means more aggressive lobe, you can have 240, with .600 lift with a lazy flank, in other hand 240 with .550 could be a very "square" aggressive lobe with a ton area under the curve.. regards from Argentina
@LukeSportsman15 сағат бұрын
I partially agree, thinking lobes of a flat tappet vs roller. But this is certainly still changing valve speeds too. Just at different portions of the curve.

I just got my first set of aluminum heads. This just hit after installing the headers. Do you have any secrets to protecting any bolt threads and installing plugs in unused passages. I boogered the first thread of one header thread. Ran a tap through it and it was good. I’ve been freaked out about bolt holes and plugs. Do you use any special thread lube or lock tight? Is galling of threads an issue?
