Idk where this side of the fanbase created where they just see him as this extremely indifferent and pesimist person, Gon is a complex character but for completely different reasons you all give.

I have a full essay about Thorfinn all written up already, and I honestly just want to drop it here because I haven't gotten a chance to speak on Vinland Saga on this channel in a while, and my brain is still deep in it. to me, Thorfinn's character is legitimately fascinating. starting from the age of six, Thorfinn was already a prideful kid, even when he was back in the village where he was raised. we see it in the first couple episodes... he doesn't want to believe that their people ran away to Iceland, thinking that it's disgraceful, despite the reality that Thors deserted the Jomsviking. at the age of six, this simply hasn't been properly explained to him yet, and in fact, Thors doesn't talk about his time with the Jomsviking at all. but Thorfinn still absorbs attitudes via cultural osmosis from his surroundings. and when his father is called to war, Thorfinn starts playing rougher with the other kids as a kind of mimicking of what he thinks it means to qualify as strong enough to be a soldier. and, like many children, he's in the part of life where feeling angry goes hand in hand with fighting or roughhousing, because it's instant catharsis for his little kid frustrations. Thors is interesting because he goes against the dominant cultural attitude that surrounds him, as shown very plainly when the town celebrates that there's going to be a war, while he stands dejected in their midst. and both of his children are influenced by this culture... we see it in Ylva when she asks about getting a slave, (and we also see how Thors differs from the dominant cultural mindset when pays for the freedom of a dying man in episode 1), and we see it in Thorfinn when he goes looking for the dagger. once again, Thors differs, and he has to try and teach Thorfinn better, but he has limited time. and Thorfinn has a point. Thors is about to go to war. his job there will be to kill the enemy. regardless of how Thors, as an adult, intends to finagle this situation going forward, Thorfinn doesn't know what's going on in his head. and we even see Thors stumble over his words several times while trying to convey this. I think this is because Thors's pacifism is a conclusion that he came to on his own, intuitively, and after a lot of experience. and unless a person has been through his same experiences, it's very hard to make them understand what he sees. by the time Thors dies, he has still yet to say anything that would truly convince Thorfinn of his pacifistic point of view. this is actually a very clever bit of writing, because it basically communicates to the audience "I know you won't believe this idea without proof" and via Thorfinn, the story then intends to provide it. but first, Thorfinn is further disincentivized from considering Thors's perspective by the way that this philosophy fails him. if Thors dying was the result of his pacifistic approach, then it didn't really do him any good, did it? to six year old Thorfinn, his father's method was proven useless, in the most dramatic way possible. Thorfinn still misses his father, so he still tries, to some degree, to emulate his father's conduct. that's why he demands to fight Askeladd in a duel. and yet, you can tell that Thorfinn is meshing this with the might-makes-right landscape of his culture. he hasn't been convinced that there's any good in reconciliation, or taught in a way he can understand... and so the duel, as a gesture, is hollow. the homage is an imperfect attempt to replicate the actions of someone he loved, without truly grasping the root motivations behind it all. but then there's still the intrigue of why his father would say these things in the first place. that's what keeps those words lingering in the back of his mind, long after his father is gone. I also think it's interesting how we, as the audience, can clearly see the position of Thors in terms of the world and it's attitudes. Thors is a man with an uncommonly kind and gracious perspective, given his culture. honestly, the idea that Thors could arrive at this perspective all on his own is why we can believe that Thorfinn might improve someday too. Thors is proof that even violent men can atone and become better... he didn't start out perfect either. but in the moment where they clash, when you contrast Thors with Askeladd and his crew, and the way they conduct themselves, you can see why a man like Thors would be needed. the world needs people like Thors, specifically to counteract this nefarious element. Thors dying robs the world of a valuable perspective, because men like Askeladd also exist. if you already know why Thors was valuable, then watching Thorfinn throughout season 1 is frustratingly tragic... but if you don't understand Thors at first, and you need a bit more convincing, then watching Thorfinn over the rest of the first season is the proof of what Thors knew. Thors is proven right because Thorfinn does everything wrong. and one of Thorfinn's strongest and most defining traits as a protagonist is his tenacity. he tries very hard, gets very far, and never gives up. due to this, Thorfinn stays on the path that runs counter to his father's philosophy, displaying it's every flaw as thoroughly as possible, from the start of that road, all the way to the bitter end. if a story is going to preach peace, it has to put it's money where it's mouth is, and acknowledge all the aspects of life on earth that make peace so difficult to achieve. that's what Thorfinn is there to experience. without his determination, we wouldn't be able to see all of it... but this very same determination will be pointed in a different direction in the second season. (to be continued)
@kamuyking551 Жыл бұрын
(continued) so then it's necessary to talk about Thorfinn's manipulation in the first season... I do think that, past a certain point, Thorfinn is at least partially responsible for the choices he's made. but in particular, when it comes to Thorfinn, I think it's more important to talk about culpability, and how messy that idea becomes around his character. like... I think most people can agree that when a six year old child watches his father die, declares his intent to duel his father's killer to the death, and then an adult takes that seriously and tells him "not until you've accomplished something on the battlefield," that constitutes an obvious power imbalance that the adult in the situation is exploiting. the adult knows how ridiculous that request is, but the kid doesn't. that kid is about to put themselves in danger, and there's an imbalance in who knows it. even if having a mature perspective was the only unequal aspect, this would count as manipulation, to a grossly unfair degree, but Askeladd also has physical strength and coordination on his side... there is no part of this scenario that Thorfinn can control. and that's a tricky statement, because technically, he could just walk away. but what six year old could you actually expect to ignore a smug adult who is consciously pushing all of his buttons? when I say that Thorfinn has no control, I mean over anything. to begin with, this is a matter of wounded pride... Thors was killed, and Askeladd says it's because he was naive. Thorfinn was taken hostage, and Askeladd says it's because he was weak. and now Thorfinn feels like, if he wants to counteract any of those statements, he has to prove himself against the ways that Askeladd is judging him. if Askeladd is the one setting the standard, then as Thorfinn ages, when do his actions become his own? I'm asking mostly hypothetically, because I think the ambiguity works well here... and it's also the nearest we'll get to the truth. as Thorfinn grows up, there's this slow slide into worse and worse behavior, but the presence of all of it is based on his guidance, or lack thereof. he literally wouldn't even physically be in these situations if the adults around him didn't put him there... and that's just a fact, regardless of intent. the adults around him may not know or care what this is doing to him, but it's still happening. in some ways, this concept doesn't even change with modernization... many abusers wouldn't self-describe as abusing someone while they're doing it. and because of this, there isn't really a moment you can pinpoint at which the culpability 100% shifts over to Thorfinn. even when he's old enough to seem less like a little kid to us, we still know how his history led him to this point, with no real opportunity for his trajectory to change. I think that's the point of the scene in the village, with that woman who treats Thorfinn's wounds. Thorfinn was probably around ten years old at that point in time... so he's already spent years around Askeladd, absorbing what his expectations are, and learning that he's never good enough. and the effect that this produces, is that Thorfinn is already incapable of choosing something better than suffering. while following Askeladd, his needs are consistently neglected, he's the subject of mockery, he goes unfed, he isn't given a roof over his head or safe place to sleep... under any other circumstances this would qualify as abuse. once again, just because the times set a precedent for adult pirates to display this kind of behavior naturally, that doesn't mean it damages a person any less to be subjected to those conditions. and in this village, Thorfinn is offered all of the things he lacks with Askeladd... a bed, new clothes, food, hygiene, medical care, basic kindness, and he doesn't even think about truly accepting it. he's already rejecting practical decency... you could put better incentives right under his nose, and he's trained himself not to touch it, because he doesn't believe he wants it. instead, he'll keep following Askeladd, because he's addicted to the idea that he has a slim chance at catharsis. if he can defeat Askeladd, he's convinced that it'll be satisfying enough to make it all worth it. so all he wants is a duel. and in order to get a duel, he has to do what Askeladd says. his wants are now Askeladd's wants. and nothing can alter his priorities from the outside. I always think about how unsettling it would be to pull Thorfinn aside at the age of, say, eight or something? and ask him to explain what he's doing and why. hearing his child voice explain it would be very creepy. and as he grows older, this doesn't change. his motives, and way of thinking about his actions, remain very childish, and very dependent on someone else, even into his teenage years. he's a puppet, and it doesn't even take much to see the strings. it's like Askeladd says in the episode where he finally gives Thorfinn that duel... "everyone is a slave to something." Thorfinn has literally been told what to do all his life... he's never really decided his own actions all this time. so as unhealthy as it is, it makes total sense for him to end up enslaved on the farm. this is well within his comfort zone. and Askeladd had to have known what he was doing... but he's a fascinating character, in large part because a lot of his motives remain ambiguous. I mean, Askeladd was awake when Thorfinn snuck up on him with a sword... we could assume that Askeladd would let Thorfinn kill him in his sleep, given what Askeladd did to his dad, but Askeladd also could've simply been curious to see whether Thorfinn would do it or not... or he may have believed that Thorfinn wasn't capable of it, whether due to his age, or his father's values. we already know that Askeladd was intrigued by Thors's values, and that intrigue might've carried over to Thorfinn a small bit. we never get an explanation, so we can only speculate. but I think we have to be careful not to project too much fond sentiment onto Askeladd... he's a smart tactician, and when he tells his uncle that he's using his slave wrong, he literally says "anyone can be useful if you know how to handle them" and it cuts directly to Thorfinn. Askeladd knows he's being manipulative, especially during the duel, when he baits Thorfinn's anger by calling into question whether he even killed Thors in the first place. Askeladd also consistently sets Thorfinn up with near impossible missions, like bringing him a head with a helmet, or killing Thorkell, and then his crew retreats before Thorfinn can even extract himself from the situation. Askeladd has no qualms with presuming that he died... and he keeps tasking him with missions like these, which are designed to leave Thorfinn constantly falling just a little bit short. to me, this high bar dangled just ever so slightly out of reach is part of the manipulation... because Askeladd knows just where to place it so that Thorfinn has to keep striving for something unobtainable. and the longer this goes on, the less possible it is for Thorfinn to give this up, because if he does, then all of this will have been for nothing. Thorfinn has already done too much... if nothing comes of it, then he will have been a monster for no reason. (to be continued)

(continued) I also feel like I have to give some supplementary thoughts about Askeladd, so here's a thing I wrote about that: to me, Askeladd is stuck somewhere between his warrior's pride, and his human sentiment. but when it comes to Thors, it seems pretty obvious to me that Askeladd found his Artorius figure. during episode 12, Askeladd flashes to Thors, and then says "the more you fall for a man, the less things go how you want" and then starts asking Gratianus about whether or not he believes in the old legend of the general who is supposed to return, from far to the west, to restore the Britannia of old. later on, when Askeladd's men are betraying him, there's a conversation between Askeladd and Torgrim where Torgrim asks him why he's fighting so hard... Torgrim has never seen him struggle like this. all throughout this episode, we've been flashing back to young Askeladd caring for his mother in the stables, as she tells him about Artorius. she tells him to serve the true king when he appears. and Askeladd tells Torgrim that he's getting old... there's only so much time left that he can work. and he's also been saying ever since unrest began to spread amongst his men, that a man should follow a leader that they want to follow. Askeladd killed Ragnar because he wants Canute to change, and become a man he wants to follow. he's still searching for the true king. back during his encounter with Thors, he asked him to lead them, in true seriousness. but then, during Askeladd's telling of his backstory, he describes the time when Olaf raised a sword against his mother. he says that if Artorius wasn't going to come save her in that moment, then he was probably never going to come. if Artorius was in a paradise like Avalon, he'd probably never return for the sake of a world like the one Askeladd has experienced. he literally says that if you want anything done, a person has to do it. not a king, and not a god. to me, Askeladd's story is that he became jaded toward the legend his mother clung to, and by the time he encountered Thors, it was hard to consider choosing to believe in it again. it moved him, somewhere deep down... but he was also already too entrenched in his warrior ways to be able to pivot and choose to follow Thors. he probably really hated himself for that... for destroying the hero Artorius that he'd been waiting for. it's possible that he even blames his Danish blood. I think his relationship to Thorfinn is all about half measures. Askeladd won't kill the kid himself, because he promised Thors that he would let all the rest of his people go, if Thors gave his life willingly. and there's a grain of Thors within Thorfinn... he at least won't do something dishonorable, like kill Askeladd in his sleep, though to Askeladd, this is just tactically stupid on Thorfinn's part. but past that, Thorfinn doesn't really embody all the honorable things about Thors that Askeladd wishes still remained. and this makes sense... Thorfinn was only six when Thors passed. I think Thors himself knew he was struggling to convey all these important things that he wished he could teach to his son, but part of the tragedy of Thors is that there was simply no time. if Askeladd hadn't stolen Thors from his family, then the Jomsviking would've... Thors was leaving home before he had time to fully raise his son. at least if he'd been able to leave Thorfinn with Helga, he knew she'd understand and be able to teach him. but we even see Thors struggle to find the words for what he's trying to say. but rather than resembling Thors... in the first season, Thorfinn mostly resembles a young Askeladd. there's an adult in his life, who brought harm to his beloved parent, and who he now lives in proximity to... and this casts Askeladd in the role of his father, Olaf, a man he hated. and you can see a complex type of bitterness there... Thorfinn is simultaneously the son of the legendary Thors, and nothing like Thors. simultaneously just like younger Askeladd, but unable to accomplish what Askeladd did. simultaneously taking a page from his father's philosophy by demanding the duels, and yet taking all of his cues from Askeladd when it comes to his behavior, thus holding a mirror to Askeladd himself, saying "this is what you teach" because while Askeladd never wanted to be a father, he's become the only thing a father ever was to him... someone who ruins the kid they're training by setting the violent standard, which becomes the way that said young child feels he must prove himself. Askeladd is simultaneously raising Thorfinn wrong, pretending he's not raising Thorfinn at all, identifying with Thorfinn deeply (even in terms of his own self loathing), keeping his promise to Thors by leaving Thorfinn alive, and regularly professing that he doesn't care if Thorfinn lives or not. to me, Thors was someone who had a mindset that the world needed... especially given how nefarious a lot of the people he was encountering were. Thors was proof that a violent man could reform himself and become someone noble, but to an outside observer, he was a paragon who left the world behind... with only the imperfect people left, to sort out how to live amongst themselves, in the messiest way possible. but if a good man like that isn't capable of surviving... if he was too naive, or too kind, to live through the trials that violent men put him through... then it kind of proves Askeladd right. the legendary hero wouldn't be able to stay in a world like this... it would reject him. Askeladd destroyed his hero. the source of Askeladd's nihilism lies in a type of perfectionism... nothing is quite good enough for him. even Thors couldn't survive what Askeladd is capable of. it is then interesting to note that Askeladd starts to mirror Thors in the tail end of the first season. just after he sends Atli and Torgrim away, there's a shot of Askeladd from behind, standing alone, which resembles the shot of Thors from way back in the village when he's looking for Thorfinn, just before leaving. and overlayed on that shot of Thors, is a girl at the pier asking Lief, "if Thors is going to send all the men back to the village, does that mean he'll be going to the battlefield alone?" this same question applies to Askeladd here. he's sent Atli and Torgrim away, with instructions never to touch a sword again. he's sending good men far from the battlefield, to find a wife, have kids, and raise sheep. and when the time comes... when Askeladd has to figure out how to save Wales while also ensuring Canute's ability to rise to power... Askeladd sacrifices his life for the protection of others. he becomes Lucius Artorius Castus. I think it's appropriate that this is where all the bitterness falls away... and where Askeladd acknowledges that Thorfinn deserves to live a better life, far different from the one he's led up til now. Thorfinn's true battle will be to venture beyond the world they've been living in. beyond the world that even Thors could see. this is when Askeladd chooses to call him "son of Thors" to cap off this little string of observations, here is the direct quote of the story of Avalon from Askeladd's backstory: "my mother was a slave. she said that far to the west, in a land across the sea, where ordinary people cannot reach, there lies a paradise where the hero Artorius lives. the hero is still there now, healing his battle wounds. if our ancestor really was living in such a nice place, he'd never come back to a world like this." and here is the tale of Vinland, which is consistently told to suffering slaves as a source of hope: "far to the west, across the sea, there is a land called Vinland. it's warm. and fertile. a faraway land, where neither slave traders nor the flames of war can reach." the difference in these men may, in some ways, be contained in these expectations. paradise as a far off place, which ordinary people cannot reach, where heroes hide away from the ugliness of the world... vs. a paradise that the poor, downtrodden, and destitute can dream of going to, when everything else in the world seems cruel. there's a place for you there. if a man truly believes that... what could he do, with that idea in his mind's eye? (to be continued)
@kamuyking551 Жыл бұрын
(continued) I think the hard part about seeing Thorfinn in the beginning of the second season, is that there are two hugely painful aspects of his psychology that are weighing on him at that point. and we've seen both of them in action throughout the whole first season. the first is Thorfinn's sense of self loathing. even when he was still just six years old, Thorfinn was told that Thors died protecting him. Thorfinn was weak, he was taken hostage, and Thors traded his life to save his son. if Thorfinn hadn't been there at all, maybe things would've gone differently... but more than that, Askeladd and his men judge Thorfinn by an adult's standards, and mock him when he fails to match their violence. Thorfinn's quest to make Askeladd pay for what he did is just as much about this, as it's ever been about avenging Thors. Thorfinn's mission statement, on the surface, is to avenge his father. but deep down, he seeks to kill the weakness and shame within himself. and Askeladd knows this, so he toys with it. originally, Askeladd refuses to duel Thorfinn again until he's "achieved something great on the battlefield" which is a vague enough statement that it could mean anything. you can keep implying that Thorfinn's efforts just aren't quite good enough for a very long time, before he finally gets old enough to realize that he's being strung along, and asks for something more concrete. that's when Askeladd switches to "bring me a head with a helmet" which is doable, in theory, but at that point Thorfinn's never done it before in practice. this lets Thorfinn feel like he's actually being tested, and true enough, he does achieve it. but Askeladd is also perfectly willing to retreat before Thorfinn comes back with his requested prize... with the implication being that he's already assuming Thorfinn died. Askeladd is subtly displaying that he had such little faith in him. and Thorfinn knows this... it's only making him angrier. and so, Askeladd uses that anger in their duel. he mocks Thorfinn, pretends to not even remember Thors, and then mocks Thors... knowing that this is the easiest way to manipulate Thorfinn into losing. then the next goal is "defeat Thorkell" which is known to be impossible by almost every man on the battlefield. and so we see this pattern developing. Askeladd always moves the goalpost to a place that seems achievable but is actually impossible. Askeladd knows it, but Thorfinn doesn't. and this means that Thorfinn's entire experience with Askeladd is one of constant failure. from Thorfinn's perspective, he's done nothing but fail all his life. and on top of that, there's the second aspect of his psychology to consider. Thorfinn knows he's been committing horrible acts this whole time. however much it hurt him to lose Thors, he's been hurting others just as much, if not more. the whole time he told himself that if he could just defeat Askeladd... if he could just accomplish his goal... then the cost would be justified. in truth, Askeladd set the standard by which Thorfinn would be judged the entire time, and then never let Thorfinn meet his standards... and now Askeladd is gone. now, Thorfinn's actions have to be his own. and Thorfinn literally doesn't know how to do that. and furthermore, if Thorfinn considers all of his past crimes to have been for nothing, because he also failed to be the one to defeat Askeladd, and now all of that effort was a waste... then the severity of the things he's done have no shoulders to fall upon but his own. he did those things. and while there was a coercive element to it all, Thorfinn's hands were still the ones that held those knives. consider what he thought Askeladd deserved for the crime of killing Thors. if Thorfinn has committed similar crimes, what must he think he owes for that, based on his own standards? Thorfinn doesn't know how to live like this. this is why Einar is so important, and one of my favorite characters in Vinland Saga... but if I start trying to get into him and his psychology and role in the story, I could double the length of what I've already written. so I'll leave off here.

The true otakus stay at home and watch anime as if it was a second profession. That way when they leave for an anime event, they can correct the mistakes of the rookie otakus :)
