Totally disagree for the TR. The norm is defined by what people accept. If absolutely no pilot paid for a TR, how would airlines type-rate their new pilots ? Exactly, they'd have no choice but to pay for the TRs. For me it all comes down to the way pilots finance their training. After loaning +100,000€ many resort to pay a TR to reach the right seat more quickly because they feel financially pressured. I know many pilots who completed modular training along their job and were totally debt free when looking for their first FO job and guess what, they could afford to be very picky and not accept whatever Bs some airlines ask. To think carefully before even starting training 💭

In Thailand I heard that most/majority of pilots (in lowcost carriers dominating the domestic market) pay for their A320 TRs because the airlines are soooo cheap here and basically won't hire you without one. Further increases the barrier to entry.

Awesome life Information in general, as a Former manager & recruiter in several industries most of this information applies to any job you apply for.

Sorry to say but I'm a bit disappointed in this video series. Is it useful for candidates to prepare for a selection? Likely. On the other hand it's supporting the unhealthy direction the industry is headed to. An employment relation should be a win-win situation. If the potential employer is 'not impressed by a tiny bracelet' , do you really want to work there? What kind of culture is that? Yes, recruiters are avoiding risk indeed but they should be able to see below the surface. Are they really, or just (mis)using the current market situation in which candidates spent 100k and years on training are queuing to do anything to get in?

Imagine you have a full time job where you spend majority of your life away. On your time at home you have kids and a wife and a house. Of course friends and family to maintain contact with. But they want you to spend a year preparing for an assessmemt? I have been to major companies interviews and most of them cant even answer basic questions on the contract. They dont cooperate to help make a decision if spending all this time preparing is worth it. I spent months preparing for an inteview just to turn it down because the contract did not live up to my hopes. But they did not want to trll me this until after the last stage, months of work. I think the companies need to change the entire recruitment process. Some even have the policy that if you fail then you are permanently out.

As many people here I don't quite understand on how knowing an airplane count makes you a better pilot. It has nothing to do with motivation. I work in sales, does that mean I must know how many parking spots we have outside the office? I had my assessment last week and it was nerve wrecking. I mean yes, you can go for it as many times as you want, but will answering all of the questions determine whether you're a good future pilot? Of course not. And sadly I don't even know if there's a way to calculate such a complex thing. Especially when there's a huge debt at stake. It can be both unsettling and demotivating at the same time. Just seems too much.

I totally agree, it;s the famous 'sunken cost fallacy'. All to just get a button push job. It looks like they are looking for astronauts but they are only allowed to push buttons in the end, any deviation from the SOP and you're out. I think airlines will have to ground 50% or more of their aircraft due to a lack of pilots in the next 5 years if they continue to look for astronauts. It's just a job, if you have a frozen ATPL and TR you are good to go. Airlines should provide any additional training for free, if they think it's needed to uphold their standards.

TOTALLY DISAGREE with self sponsored type rating! If you have the money for it, don't waste them! Keep the money for future costs, like rent advance in your future base. Airline companies don't want cadet pilot with self sponsored type rating and ZERO hours on it.
