I Attended My First Rodeo

I forgot to mention it, but the name Cracker Day Rodeo comes from “Florida Crackers”- historic Florida cattle ranchers, crackin’ bull whips. Before tourism development, Florida was mostly cattle pasture.
Did you know that the term for a Florida native is a Florida Cracker? As in: I’m a Florida Cracker - and not only cuz I’m white!

I had a childhood book about Ferdinand, a bullfighting bull who sat there and refused to fight. And a peacenik was born. I guess this is all I ever need to see of bullriding. Even though these are bred for rodeo, and even though they "win", they're intentionally stressed to the point of frenzy, which I found upsetting to watch. It's interesting that they asked who among the audience was there for the first time. It's a specific task of desensitization, a necessary indoctrination to secure acceptance.

Cattle prods (electric shock), spurs, and "bucking straps" are used on the bull just before they enter the rink, as tools of torture to make sure they buck wildly.

If you ever get the chance (when folks can do things together again) you should go to a gay rodeo event. www.igra.com/ Tons of fun, and the after party has drag queens! **My most adventurous weekend ever (in my mid-20s ca. 1995) I competed in the Wild Drag Race event in Del Mar, CA and my team came in second place.
