When I was 11 yrs old I lied about my age to enter a 6 and under tennis tourney. I’m not proud of lying but I’m very proud of beating 6 yr old Carlos Alcaraz and winning the tourney. It was the greatest day of my life. I’ll never forget the moment I held that trophy and looked down at the little midget who would one day win Wimbledon.

Hey! Great video! I hope you look back on your tennis career with pride. You are/were still an elite level athlete, truly the top .1%. In such a competitive sport, especially one like tennis where being "self-started" is so hard, you did what others could only dream of. Also, I'd be curious to hear your thoughts on new UTR tournaments, and how they seem to be a bit more accessible to those wanting to climb the ranks without losing so much money on ITF/Challenger circuits where you lose 1 match and you gotta go home.
@ChangBangTennis Жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for the encouraging words! I am pretty happy with the level of tennis I got to. Of course I wish I had been better, but it’s all good haha. For the UTR, I think it’s great to have access so these local tournaments. You get a ton of practice that you don’t have to travel a lot for. Growing up, we used to have to drive/fly to different cities to play tournaments which was really time consuming. I played so many UTRs when I was playing pro, but I used the UTRs for practice. You can’t get professional ranking points from them. The downsides for UTR is: 1. The level of play depends on who signs up. 2. Sooo many juniors will withdraw from the tournament if they lose in main draw. So you could sign up for the tournament and only play 1 match…

You also be Dominic who is current 87 ATP and was top 50 ATP... But both of them really were kids trying to find their game... Also if you look hes had a lot of success on grass where being 6'7" and Hitting a huge shot is not going to come back... you need a weapon to get to the "big time!"

I see no mention of his racket change to the powerful tf iso which seems to suit his game to perfection, especially on grass courts!

I like to think that your equipment doesn’t matter as much as the amount of work you put in. But I do agree that the racket/strings can make a difference
@adamgray6025 Жыл бұрын
At this level it really doesn’t work like that. You don’t even know if he’s playing with an ISO, the frames are all painted.
@ilips6588 Жыл бұрын
It's possibly another frame (his original dynacore), but it seems more whippy when I see him play.. Bublik is having success with it too on grass. Could be wrong :) Equipment can make a little difference for some people, none for others, there's no rule..but a little difference is still a lot at pro level!

Chris’s story, and yours as well, is a powerful reminder of just how awesomely good any pro player in the top 400 is. I’ve watched guys ranked in the 250-300 range and they are beasts, yet they’re stuck playing Challenger events, making almost no money. I remember way back in 1987, I think it was, watching a small tune-up tournament for the US Open, in upstate NY. Agassi was the new golden boy. He was about 17 and everyone was fawning over him. One day I was watching the practice courts and saw a skinny kid playing. After about ten minutes I turned to my regular tennis partner and said, “that kid is amazing, he’s going to be something”. That kid was Sampras, whom I’d never heard of. If only I’d ever had a fraction of that level of talent.

Excellent. I'm guessing, but I'm willing to put $100. on "his secrets" being the fact that he's now 6'7". Unfortunate that tennis has fallen into the big-person sport that has always been true of the big three in the U.S.
@Tennis214 Жыл бұрын
Ideal height still seems to be just above 6 feet tall The big 4 Carlos Alcaraz Ruud Rune Sinner Rublev Tommy Paul Tiafoe Norrie Musetti All of them top 20 now or in recent years and not near 6’7” But generally yes, being taller than average is better in sports or life in general
@info781 Жыл бұрын
USA is so hard court centric it favors players with big serve/forehand. Growing up on clay forces players to develop other strengths.
@ChangBangTennis Жыл бұрын
I wish I was taller :) haha
@andrewsmith3613 Жыл бұрын
@@Tennis214 A huge serve can get you in to the top 100 or top 50 though. Say you are working with an 80% win probability on your serving points and a 20% win probability on your return points. Now at this point I was going to work out all the combinatorial probabilities associated with winning a set, but basically my point is that you can win matches that way, because you just need to get lucky on a few return points in the tiebreak.
@pavementpounder7502 Жыл бұрын
Being too tall has its drawbacks, too. Low shots, skidding slices, drop shops, less agility in general. 6 to 6'3" is the sweet spot for modern tennis.

Yeah beating him 2/3 set does not mean much. Playing at least 10 set to figure who have better techniques and skills in a span of 1 month is better to see who is better. There are people who have the best techniques and skills but aren't comfortable to play and show their talent at the moment. 2/3 set is just too short.
