Hi, I am from Derry, and it is so nice to see parts of our city on screen. In fact today I walked past some of them you see here. Derry Girls put Derry on TV for better reasons than ever before.

Such a hilarious series! Poor James, he's sadly both male and English at an all-girls catholic school...in the mid-90s LMFAO! They are a RIOT!

Not only are you along for this hilarious ride, but you're constantly predicting and relating so hard, the absolute involvement already makes this my favourite reaction to Derry Girls! Brilliant work. I spent a few months in Derry as an exchange student/intern years ago, absolutely love the city and the crazy accent that had me asking the locals to repeat themselves so many times it wasn't socially acceptable anymore.

One of the best derry girls reactions I’ve watched! It’s nice when people bother to learn/know stuff about the Troubles before they head in because it makes the whole thing much funnier Just a note on the context of the troubles (yes The Troubles was one of my history hyperfixations) - there was a religious divide but it’s perhaps more accurate to say it’s a socio-economic/cultural divide - Catholics in NI were much more likely to be living in poverty, because of segregation between the Anglican/Nationalist/Pro-British community and the Catholic/Republican/Pro-Ireland community, that protected the socio-economic power of the Anglican/Nationalist/Pro-British Community (which isn’t to say there were no poor anglicans - but you know general terms) Also people could be Catholic or Anglican without being actively involved in the conflict - the religious/cultural/national identities are all very complicated Sorry for the rant in the comments - I’m just very interested in the Troubles
@lasfrxsas5764 Жыл бұрын
I looked over the Troubles for half an academic year in secondary school and that was A LOT. I watched the Derry Girls later and I was thrilled to see more about it. Also, don't apologise for the rant you gave lots more information!!

It's worth noting there were a lot of nationalist protestants outside of the north too. It just became a more clear divide in the north because of the plantations.

The family vibes so reminded me of childhood. I'm from Newcastle but the the northeast we're more similar the Scot and Irish then to the Southerners. I did a DNA test not too long ago and turns out I'm actually more Scottish than English because of ancestors 😂

Just an observation: (I love love love irish accent) every word spoken in Irish accent has an upward rising tone. Isn't it? I guess that's why it's so cute. 😊
@alfafalk Жыл бұрын
In Northern Ireland in particular. it's my favourite accent in the English language. The melody and the tonality of the NI accent reminds me a bit of a Swedish accent in western Sweden called "Värmländska" ( it would be like vairmlandish in English). The also have this rising tonality in south eastern Norway as well.

I am so pleasantly surprised to see you react to Derry Girls! I've loved it since it first aired and recommend it anytime someone is looking for a comedy. A lot of the comedy does translate even if you're not from Ireland or Scotland. I'm American and it's still funny as fuck to me, though I'm sure there are things I miss. I love history so the show did prompt me to research a bit about The Troubles, since I didn't know much aside from the fact that there was conflict in Northern Ireland. I grew up in the 80s and 90s in Oklahoma, so it just wasn't a hot topic. Anyway, enough rambling from me. Looking forward to part 2!
