You definitely need to fix that temp guage asap, should be just a sensor it’s a very easy sensor to get to. I think it’s been overheating this whole time. Usually when people get e36s they bulletproof the cooling system first by replacing the entire coolant system with all new and upgraded full metal parts instead of the plastic cooling system, then and only then will they start to drift or drive it hard. Drifting on the stock brittle plastic cooling system with a non working coolant guage was asking for big trouble.

Collete, shout out from Poland - a kingdom of E36 drifting. From what i see and hear it is quite possible that your engine blew a head gasket. It is overheating, when you try to start in the end I saw white smoke from exhaust and those sounds are probably pistons trying to compress water. E36 is a great chassis but a bit more demanding maintenance-wise. Driving without temp gauge was a bad idea. You all bought cheap, almost 30-year-old E36s, done nothing to protect the engine (like a bigger radiator, bigger fan or at least oil change) and started to abuse them. Unfortunately thats the result. I wish you all the best and don't get discouraged - E36 is probably the easiest drifting machine you can still buy for cheap.

Definitely sounds like top end noise not a rod. I know you need a temp sensor or manual temp gauge 100%. The rattle sound sounded like my old truck when it runs hot and its pre ignitioning.

Engine does sound *extra crunchy.* Parts have too much clearance. Parts may auto-eject / leave the block if not remedied soon. Glad you got some slide time with it. Was a blast just riding along.

Sounds like the camshaft has gone from heat and probably valve Springs. Check the oil plate for bits 👍🏼

Bet it was hot as sounded like pinging u can get it when car is over heating. Do a TK check for combustion in rad and pressure test cooling systems over night and crank engine with plugs out see if coolant is in cylinders

Pistons, rod bearings most likely and crankcase vent hose is corrosive. Go for that new motor or do a complete rebuild. In the process of converting my e46 to drift ! E36 vs 46 do a lot of researching on various models during those manufacturing years.

chain tensioner or valve lifters, engine sound, check clutch fan with engine on and with cloth try to stop if easy stops clutch fan is dead if no then good, starting problems can be after overheating engine coolant sensor to ecu is bad , under intake have 2 , one for ecu another for dash,gearbox getrag is shit especially shifting at high rpm's doesn't allow even with good gearbox, zf ftw

Great chassis, but everyone was taking a gamble on the engines. Sometimes u win and sometimes u lose, but no temp gauge is always a ticking time bomb in anything banging limiter. Oh well, what engine is going in next? 😅

Sucks about the car, time crunch sucks cause you never get time to do the small stuff that is really important like water temp, oil temp, crank case pressure (for turbo cars) etc that lets you catch stuff before it goes wrong. Would love to see you dump a proper BMW engine into that chassis.

The overheating probably didn’t help. lol Merry Christmas 🎄🎁 P.S.: Someone should smell the dark smoke coming out of the exhaust, because as it’s then not coolant (would be white), it may be oil, which means you could have blown the head gasket or damaged valve guides/seals due to overheating. Enough…Merry Christmas again! lol

beemers use to have a habit of oil pumps dieing too 😂 as for being worse than rotary, I think someone is forgetting about Sailor Moon, how many years did it the to get that car running half decent? 😂 Those beemers are the perfect throw away drift missile and handle great and take very little set up. If you want to annoy Adam go buy the 5 series 535 from the same era then, you'll have something like you're jdm drift missile, thay handle great too.

You know what happens when you do! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 J/k, I'm sorry you're dealing with this though. The E36 was notorious for cooling issues, but the engine itself is petty tough. A dakar yellow E36 M3 was my introduction to BMW back in 2001 lol and Now I have a G82 M4. Needless to say I got rid of my E36 a long time ago before things got REALLY crazy. I must have Stockholm syndrome though because I miss it 🤣🤣🤣 I definitely suggest checking the VANOS system and every aspect of the cooling, especially thermostat and temp sensor

sadly bmws are well known by engine failure usually crankshaft go boom an very common on bmw people over rev the fragile bmw engine The most common cause of engine failure is dirty or low oil, which can be the result of an oil leak, faulty oil pump, the oil burning too fast, or driving too long in between oil changes.
