I had an identical '84, mine was maroon, that I bought used in '90 with 105k miles for two grand. Unfortunately I had to sell it in '94 because of medical reasons. Some of us younguns in the '80's and '90's liked the Chevy Impala/Caprice, especially the two doors.
@MrExnyman Жыл бұрын
Great find! I looked at buying an 86 coupe brand new but it was a bit out of my price range. I instead bought a brand new El Camino which I still own. I was only 28 at the time. I bought a low mileage 84 Landau coupe in 1996, should never have let it go. I am now restoring an 80 Landau coupe I found in a salvage yard six years ago. One thing on that overdrive transmission, if you are driving around town in overdrive mode, it’ll hunt for the right gear which makes it feel like something isn’t working properly. The solution is to use drive around town and put it in overdrive on the highway. That way it’s not constantly hunting for the right gear.

I was a kid, 12, in 1984. Yes, I did consider this to be an old man’s car (of course, when your 12 so anybody over 50 was a fossil!) or a company car. My uncle was a manager for the gas utility and drove an Impala then Caprice for years and years as company cars. When the round style Caprice came out in 1990-91, he disliked them and switched to company trucks until he retired. The big Olds Regency 98 and Delta 88, along with the Pontiac Catalina, Bonneville, and Parisienne were my favorite of the big GMs of the late ‘70s and ‘80s! The 2 doors are pretty rare these days!

I had an 84 Malibu! I put duel exaust complete with duel catalytic converters to Mega Thrust mufflers and straight pipes on a 454 stock truck engine! That baby was a beast and had this throaty sound! Made everybody think it was a sleeper rat rod! The paint looked like it came from a meth lab!😄 all rust, no color! But it was solid and had a great interior! Of course I had to put a big ass sound system in it and had to run two batteries to keep it from killing the car when you cranked it! I put that car through Hell and back- it just kept on going like the energizer bunny!

Alternatively you delete the bullshit and put an old fashioned pure analog Q-Jet on it. Like the EEC-IV on my 300 six in my 85 F150, the mid 80s Chevy CCC carbs were absolute bollocks at the best of times and 40 years later it's a miracle if they work at all.

Hey brother, as one mechanic and hot rod builder to another mechanic, you should look into the ZDDP or better known as zinc additive for the engine oil, these older engines have flat tappet lifters and cam and the newer oil does not have zinc in it for pollution reasons so they make an additive to add into the oil for older cars so you don’t wipe out your camshaft and lifters. Alternatively you can get away with running some shell Rotella 15 W-40 in these old beasts without an issue and that has all the vitamins and minerals in it that these engines need. Congrats, you got a sweet ride there!

You're right that 77-90 B bodies usually came with a 4.75 inch bolt pattern, but police package cars, and some others like possibly Diesels, had a truck 5 inch bolt circle. The 91-96 models have the 5 inch truck pattern, and I think the suspension was based on the previous generation.

I'd be curious to know the last date / mileage entry in that service record book. That will give us an idea of when it was driven last and how the guy may have slowed down over the years. My grandfather's 67 Plymouth had a similar record and it showed 10k miles a year, then gradually tapered off to maybe 1500 miles a year. I bought it with 68k showing at 14 year old. BTW, that hanging choke probably needs a new vacuum pull off. A very common problem on those older engines.

I've updated a 1984 Vanagon Westfalia and made it a reliable daily driver and transcontinental RV. It was built in 1983... almost 40 years ago. The older you get, the faster time flies. Early 80s US cars didn't have EFI and were mostly asthmatic smoggers. Worst asphyxiated engines ever. The vanagon thankfully does have EFI. Chevy EFI by the end of the decade was a huge advance. I have an 89 pickup with TBI, an 85 Corvette with TPI and a 68 SS396 Chevelle retrofitted with TBI. I rebuild carbs for others but I hate them.
