I just picked up a 1984 e30 318i as well. Mine is in really rough condition although it only has 104k Kilometers. It’s awesome seeing you and motorhead rebuilding e30s same time as ive started my own project 💪🏻💪🏻

Yes! This is more my style. I'm so tired of all the supercar builds. You're ahead of the curve with the classics. If you're going to do a swap, stick with something OEM+. S52 would be pretty straight forward, S54 would be awesome!

Nice to see you finally on one :) Battery trays are common but so are the scuttles where they join the wings on each side, the front of the foot wells and the in pockets in the boot. I know as most i have seen have this issue lol. You could turbo the engine as a lot of people do it being a M10B18, the old 2002 turbo had that engine in a believe. Also for a nice upgrade for steering you could fit a steering rack from a e46 and put the battery in the boot. good luck with the build :)

In 1987 when a BMW E30 drove into a parking lot, everybody stopped to stare and appreciate that European compact look. Be sure and talk to an older BMW shop mechanic about engine replacement possibilities and what they are using in Germany to improve performance. Really a good choice for a new Episode series for vTuned. Congrats.

I recommend to rebuild it to original specs and leave the same engine in it after a good overhaul. In the long run, it will be worthy. As for the paint, silver-gray and black interior.

One of the best and most desirable engine swaps for the E30 is the BMW E46 M3 "S54 inline six" which has around 333hp NA.Put headers and a CSL carbon fiber intake to increase with a tune to around 350 wheel hp on it and you've got "THE PERFECT PACKAGE". Put in the trans and LSD from the same car or many of the M3's from the 90's to 2012 and you'll be Gold. It's a very straight forward swap with a fantastic power to weight and handling balance yet will really rip. They have kits to do this swap that you can get.

E30's are wonderful stock... The current engine can perform! A slight lowering, bigger sway bars, tune the current engine (cam and exhaust), tuck the bumpers, interior and paint. The handling of 318's is really good 🙂

I had a 1976 320a and a 1979 325i, both European spec while stationed in Germany. When the automatic transmission failed in the 1976, I converted it to a manual. Be sure to check the shock towers in the rear and the rocker panels, both were notorious for rust in the model years I had. Hopefully corrected in this one. Stay with BMW powerplant with turbo or supercharger. Back end is really light so consider that when changing the engine

Swap the engine for a BMW straight six 2.8 and be happy with 240-260 bhp. Upgrade the brakes and suspension, but keep it stock otherwise. Estoril Blue would be nice.

Throw in a m50b25 engine from an bmw e36 from 1990 to 1993. The engine with out vanos. And turbo charge that. The stock internals are good for around 600 peak horse power. And then you can still use it as a daily driver :)

Maybe the gas is pretty old and got down on the octane levels. Those engines have a little more compression than old US ones, so they tend to knock earlier. It probably already has an MCU, but that vintage probably didn´t come with knock control. But still a good rebuild is necessary, with >300k its very likely the rings are worn down and who knows if that engine always got the right oil at the right intervals.
