Great job on breaking it all down, i have a 2016 4runner trail with kdss, and I can not imagine having anything else. This truck still looks as good as the first day i bought her. Maybe even better since I've decked it out for overlandding. I've done a lot of camping trips with her, and yet i I'm still able to keep her looking newish. Japan knew exactly what they were doing when they built the 4runnner and the GX. I only wished that they would have come out with a better looking 6th gen. Love my 5th gen.

I love our 2 5th gens, Toyota would have an absolute all star if they would have just done a body and interior change and left the drivetrain alone. Part of the draw for me is the reliability which I don’t see staying as good with the newer ones.

I like the way you and anyone should think when you acquire or keep a vehicle. This vehicle will always have solid resale vs something else but it is rare air for anyone to make money cherry picking a purchase and holding and maintaining it over 10, 20, 30 years and making a real net return. The best proposition is if someone has $50k cash sitting around you’re better off most say investing that money. Those returns over the same periods are much better than any car. No matter how good or rare.

My 2004 Toyota 4Runner SR5 V6, I bought in 2019 with 119K miles. Got a steal of a deal because the person thought the rims were flaking off and a scratch on a fender made it not worth as much. I bought it for $7K. Now 164k mile on the odometer no problems just maintenance. , i bought factory refurbished rims on eBay for $425 put on with AT tires. I don’t mind the scratch on the fender added a couple more going down forest service roads. I Have driven across country on vacation several times it’s a Daily driver and not once have needed to add oil between oil changes. Plan on driving to at least 300K miles then selling it for about what I gave. Now I’m saving for that future 5th gen I plan on buying around 2030-2035 when the best deal appears

So in January I bought (investment built to last forever!) a new 24’ TRD OffRoad 4 Runner AND I never gave them a second glance before (even they been out forever). I didn't even have to mess with a dealership. I bought the SR5 premium because it had the exact features I needed on it. You basically have to take what they have right now, and you can't be super picky about color, etc... mine is white, 4WD, and came with the blackout package and the TRD wheels on it. I bought my wife a new 4runner (pro - lime rush) a couple of years ago. It was her first non mom car in over 20 years. She loves it - she only has 23K miles on it and it is such a solid vehicle. She is thinking about getting a new vehicle but we will probably keep it. I have had several Tacomas - bought a 23 Tacoma (Pro - solar octane) only because I was afraid of the turbo. I put 250k on my 19 Tacoma and it was flawless. As much as I like the Tacomas, the 4runner is in a different league. ** I just bought an 06 4Runner (V8) with only 84K miles...one owner 4x4 Sport. Whoa 😱 I know they exist, but I've never actually seen a non-Premium 5th-gen 4Runner TRD OR before. They're surprisingly difficult to find info about. I picked up my '24 ORP in Underground new this past February. Stock. The only add-on is the MTM and the cargo liner. $49k OTD in Michigan. I love it. My only two issues are (1) I wish there was more takeoff speed because it's very slow to accelerate, and (2) the backseat folded down aren't flushed because there's like a 3" drop into the trunk space. Unless, if you have the pullout tray. But, aside from those two things, I love it.

I just bought a 2024 ORP in Underground, loving it so far and will be keeping it for a long time. I definitely agree with you, the 2024 4Runner is the last of the old Toyota (the Toyota everyone loved). It’s the end of an era and it’s the last chance to get a new version. The Gen 5 has been perfected for 15 years, it’s the culmination of slight improvements year after year. The demand for them will definitely go up as soon as Toyota releases the new MSRP for the 2025s, expect $50k base and going up to possibly $75-$80k for the TRD Pro. You also have to factor in inflation, money today is not worth as much as it used to be. A $30k 4Runner 5-10 years ago is now a $50-$60k 4Runner. It’s just going to continue to get more expensive, might as well lock one down now while you still can. The longer you have your 4Runner the higher the possibilty that you’d be able to sell it for exactly what you paid for it (or more). Like the FJs you mentioned, $30k new, fast forward 10 years and you can sell it for $30k+ and essentially have had a free truck to use for 10 years (minus any potential interest/dividends/growth you would have made if you had just parked that $30k in the market). When I was shopping for a 4Runner I went to at least 12 different dealerships. They all had a few things in common: 1) The last remaining 2024 4Runners were flying off the lots. They couldn’t even keep them on the lots (unless there was a dealer mark up on them). Most of the 4Runners, mine included, didn’t even sit for a day on the lot. I had reserved mine, it got delivered in the morning, went through pre-inspection, and then I drove it home in the afternoon. 2). The dealerships had only a few more allocations of 4Runners coming for the entire rest of the year. I had an internet manager send me their entire allocation sheet for the rest of 2024, there were about 6 more 4Runners coming… that’s it. I’m pretty sure it’s like that everywhere. As production is likely only manufacturing the last of the 2024s what’s left on lots is all there is. 3). The dealerships I went to all complained about low inventory. Word from Toyota to dealerships was to expect little to no inventory for awhile, slow allocations across the board. One Dealship I was at didn’t even have a Camry or Corolla on the entire lot. 4). Despite having almost no inventory, they all had literally dozens and dozens of 2024 Tacomas and Tundras. One dealership had two 4Runners and 27 Tacomas. The sales rep there said they couldn’t move the Tacomas, no one wanted them! 😂.

The dealer had a dozen or so in transit and all of them already ha deposits on except the one I placed a deposit on. I think it's a testament to these vehicles as most people would wait for the new model and the outgoing would be sitting on the lots, but not the case with these. I watched several 4Runner videos from the Car Care Nut and Automotive Press before choosing my first 24 Limited 4wd. The only question that will be answered in time is that the 22-24 models increased substantially due to inflation. I suspect that the values on these will drop to align more with the 19-21 model values. While we don’t buy cars as investments, it’s plausible to assume that these will depreciate more.

Made the investment decision and went in on a new 24 TRD Pro just last week in Terra. I actually got around 3500 off sticker, so the deals are out there, just be patient, and be willing to drive if you’re in places like SoCal where these go with a dealer markup. Like it so far, only regret was getting rid of my 22 TRD OR Tacoma 6MT to get it. If I could have kept them both, I would have.

I just picked up my new 4Runner TRDORP on Saturday. It made more sense to me to buy a new one as the used hold their value so well that even with 30-40 thousand miles they were only about 5-7k cheaper. I also wanted to know that from day 1 she’d be taken care of and with a used vehicle, you just can’t do that. How was it broken in? What intervals did they change the oil? Did they do regular maintenance? Did they do scheduled maintenance? Too many unknowns for me.

I sold my 2016 4runner sr5 premium about 2 months ago for $25k. It had 65k miles on it and it was in fair condition, some scratches and a dent, interior was pretty rough due to my 3 dogs walking all over everything. I then bought a 2024 4runner limited in the underground color and I couldn't be happier with my choice. I am going above and beyond to take care of this one and am hoping that in 5 years it is still in close to perfect condition and will be worth the original msrp of $53k or more. Especially if inflation continues and the price of a new 4runner that no one wants is 60 something k for similar trim level.

I test drove a brand new 2024 Land Cruiser FE yesterday morning. For the money, I was not impressed at all. Technology was great. But the ride quality was massively lacking. On my way home later in the day, I saw a 2023 4Runner Limited sitting on the side of the road with a for sale sign in the window. It had 4400 miles on it. Looked absolutely brand new. My wife and I had it out for a test drive within two hours of me spotting it. The ride quality compared to the LC was striking. The 4Runner rode so much better. I was shocked. I dont doubt that prices will go up with the 5th gen 4Runner and 3rd gen Tacoma. The new ones while they look good are flawed. Suspension issues, 4 cylinder turbo engine that needs lots of field hours to see how reliable is. I got no doubts on the hybrid system as Toyota has been doing it for years, but there is no doubt they cut corners in other specs of the new gens. Toyota Landcruiser 200 series is another one that if you have the money get one while you can.

@@Jason-Samko I'm skeptical. I think it's all tied to bigger macro picture. The 4runner is a legend and it shows in the longevity study that just came out but there are a ton of them on the road. All hinges on how well the new generations end up fairing. An ugly start for sure but lots that could impact in fuel prices, alternate fuel developments (long way to go but lots of runway to prove themselves). Probably fair to say they'll keep depreciating at a slow rate but a smart market knows they're going away and there's no reason to believe prices of them used rise but for actual inflation.

I have a 2015 TRD Pro that I will never sell even if i need to replace the entire powertrain which I will do if the time comes. I think the Japanese will find a way to make this new 6th gen last as long or maybe longer than the 5th gen. The quality difference from the Tacoma to the 4Runner is astronomical even with the 3rd and 5th gens respectively. I think that same quality with the 6th gen will continue. 4Runners at the moment are the only Toyota that is assembled and QC'd in Japan - just be careful about what the pricing shows online - they will add mandatory add-ons then port-installed add-ons and list it as "TSRP". The last bugs of the 5th gen 4runner were worked out in the 2024 model. If you count 2009, when you could first buy the 5th gen, even though the official release year was 2010, and 2025 when you know you can still find the last few 2024 models still on some lots, it will mean the 5th gen was available brand-new spanning 17 different years. And, it will be missed, and it will go up in price. I think it's the land rover's last good year that's really starting to shoot up in price. The same will happen to this year's 4runner. I own a 2024 ORP. I don’t think the value will go up. They made too many of these trucks. Well over 1 million.

@timalan7406 they made many more 3rd gen tacos and their value is going up fast.

@@Jason-Samko I traded a perfect 3rd gen DC LB ORP (hard to find inferno color) on my 4Runner. I wish now I had kept it and just bought the 4Runner outright.

I needed a truck during the pandemic and found a 2020 with 4800 miles for $41000. During that time that same was going for $47000+ at a toyota dealership for a base model 4x2 in Austin. I went to buy that and he said it was 55k because of the markup. I bought the 41k used one...from carmax of all places. At the time an amazing deal. I already gave it to my son in college. He has put only 7000 miles on it. Basically its not even broken in. I told him when he wants to get rid of it, to give it back to me and i'm gonna overland it. I love that 4runner...and yes I know prices have dropped but at the time, that was the price. it is what it is.

@ABach-ld2oc yep amazing truck and those were brutal times to buy during the pandemic 75% of buyers then (or something close to that) are still upside down now.

@@Jason-Samko 100% agree, but it won't even be broken in (at my son's current rate lol) for at least 10 years. I literally have my lifetime (i'm 54) to enjoy it.
