So glad I found tour channel. I’m digging the 3rd gen build, and I like the Tahoe pick up. I have a lot of experience with the 99-06 Silverado/Tahoe platforms. If you plan on towing which you mentioned, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND a trucool 40k trans cooler. Best mod, definitely the first mod I’d do to a 60e truck/Tahoe. Hope it gives you a good run!

I am a huge Chevy fan, over the years I have seen and driven various style of Tahoes. It's interesting because 10 months ago I bought a 2002 Tahoe same color as yours, LT with 227,000 miles. People though I was crazy for buying this thing for $2000, however the more I drive it the more I appreciate the true quality Chevy used to put out back in the days. Nowadays, leather seats only apply to butt and back part of your seat specially rear bucket seats, not these body style tho. It is full on leather seats all around. You truly feel the quality and pride that went into building this truck. Of course, my Name would contradict what I am saying here but trust me, I have seen these thing go as high as 400,000 miles if not more. I know you won't regret buying this. I've done multiple maintenance items my self at home including shocks, break lines, calipers, breaks, gaskets (oil pan, valley cover and valve cover), knock sensors and wiring harness (crescent moon and foam removal from intake manifold), front and rear diff fluid change, alternator, coolant flush, levelling kit and lastly awesome wheels and tire. All set and done I put additional $ 1800 in to bring it up to my standards. Now it will keep on trucking for another 200,000 miles. Believe me when I say this, I would drive one of these with 227,000 miles than one of the newer Tahoes with 100k. Sadly, quality has been compromised by Chevy due to to cost cutting and profit margins. Next, I will follow your lead by detailing and paint correcting the exterior. I had black carpet that was fading to grayish black, so I used rug doctor and RIT dye to bring it back to its formal glory of black. I admire and appreciate someone else is out there like me that shares similar passion when it comes to these older Chevy trucks. Good Luck

When you flushed the coolant, did you remove the drain bolts on the block?
@MilanPatel-ch1qu Жыл бұрын
@@justinbeynon7980 I did not remove any bolt from the block. I just left the coolant reservoir open and ran the truck with heat cranked all the way up including the aux heat for rear on speed 1 or 2. You will see a drastic drop in coolant as it opens the thermostat after warming up. I also did a trick one of the old school mechanics taught me, squeeze the top and bottom hose multiple times before starting the car so you get good portion of the bubbles out from the get go. Squeeze it about 10-15 times on top and the bottom hose of the radiator. Once it’s warm top it off while it’s running. Just check it on and off for couple of days to make sure you don’t need to add anymore. One way you can tell if you have air pockets is your truck will tell you it’s overheating but your coolant reservoir is filled right. You just have a air pocket which you can get rid of by putting the truck on slightly high let elevation to help trapped air get out. Hope this help, Happy Fixing!!
@justinbeynon7980 Жыл бұрын
@@MilanPatel-ch1qu Thanks for the tips: one other thing: Did you drain and fill it just once or did you do that multiple times like super flush style?? I've seen videos of guys who drain the radiator, fill it with water, fire up the truck, wait for thermostat to open, shut off truck, then drain again and do that until it runs clear, then add the final coolant??

The 800 series GM trucks / SUVs were built to last. Easily go several hundered of thousands of miles. Lots of examples online of them with 300k, 400k 500k and up. We bought an 04 Yukon Denali with 105k a little over a year ago (Oct 2019). Been very happy with it so far. You should do a video on what to look for & look out for when bidding / buying from an online auction site. You got a PHENOMENAL buy on your Tahoe. Congrats!

Hi Matt, not sure if youre reading this, but you inspired me to do the same. I picked up a 01 Tahoe LT 4x4 with the 5.3 on 1/11 for 2500$. No rust, body is immaculate minus some clearcoat damage, but shes in need of some work as to be expected. She has i think 243K. You also inspired me to create a build series on it, so i appreciate that more than i can explain! Love these trucks!!

There is a ton of stuff you can do to that to make it a great tow rig and as far as mileage goes you got nothing to worry about as long as you maintain it you will get over 400k out of it easily and parts a dime a dozen. It would be a good idea to show some repair vids on your daily drivers since most youtubers just show their project cars.

Hi Matt, I got a free Tahoe from one of my subscribers that need a lot of love so I have started working a little on it and I have been searching KZbin for Tahoe videos and i found your channel a few days ago. I have been watching your 9 latest videos about the Tahoe and when I watched the video you switched the battery out you said your old battery was 3 years old so I did scroll down in your video list and found this first video about the Tahoe. So I'm gonna start watching them from here in chronological order, too bad I already spoiled the Tahoe serie by watching your newest episodes. Love your videos and you manage to get so much information said in such short time. Too bad I'm in Sweden cause the prices you pay for parts is doubled for me with delivery and import fees. Keep up the great work with your videos and now I'm gonna enjoy watch these Tahiti videos from the start. You just got a new subscriber. //Stefan the Swede

I found your Video on a Suspension upgrade and loved your video so much I subscribed and noticed you did I whole series on the Tahoe so I started with this one obviously. I have a '03 Tahoe with 330k miles, original owner, picked it up with 2 miles on it. I've had to rebuild the Transmission twice, change the Water pump twice (I think the first one I got was bad because it went out within a year), replaced the Alternator, replaced Knock Sensors, replace one passenger window motor, had the cluster repaired, upgrade radio (old one went out), also had to to a reverse flush on the heater core, and had the Radiator Repaired. Now all of that was stuff that had to be done. Most recently I've been wanting to get the suspension upgraded so it rides like new or better which is how I found your first video. I opted to take on that chore myself and now I'm regretting it because I didn't get the ride I wanted and I have a funny feeling I did something wrong because things are starting to make noises. I'm looking forward to going through your videos and hopefully making my ride like new or better.

Nice man, I'm in the UK and have a couple of third gens and a 1999 GMC Sierra truck! Bought it for the same reason, as I wanted to start towing my car to the track too. Somethings I've found is get your brake pipes checked over, the brake pedal felt crap when I got it, then found out every pipe was pretty damn corroded. Replace them all along with the flex lines and a set of Power Stop callipers all round. Still has a terrible feel with loads of travel, but this seems to be pretty standard. I'm just glad now that I'm not about to blow a brake line while towing. Also make sure you use the Tow / Haul mode when towing, don't treat it like a race truck and that gearbox will do you well! As a side note I've also just bought an LM7 engine which I'm getting Matt Walter to put together for me before shipping over here to fit in my 1991 RS.

Of course we want to see you work on the Tahoe. I also have a 3rd gen Camaro and a 2006 GMC Yukon. The Yukon has just over 190,000 miles and have never had any problems except for a small main seal leak at about 110,00 miles. Never had any issues with the transmission. I do like the 4L60E in the Yukon much better than the 700R4 in my Camaro. Good luck with the new purchase. Can't wait to see more content whether it be the Camaro or the Tahoe.

I bought a 2001 Tahoe that had real dual exhaust installed by the previous owner. Everything was fine until I towed my car to a track 400 miles away. I got about 250 miles and 'stopped' for gas only to discover that I had no brakes. The sag in the rear caused the rubber brake line to come in contact with the tailpipe and burned a hole in the hose. I tried to locate a replacement with no luck so I had a custom extra length braided steel line made and zip tied the line so it wouldn't come in contact with the exhaust again. Never had that problem again. Thank God for the emergency brake when it first happened though.

Good buy! 4L60e aren't hard to work on. Mine went out in my truck and being cheap I decided to rebuild it myself. I went to my local transmission shop and bought a rebuild kit and upgraded pistons for $120. Pulled the trans out and pulled it apart after watching a youtube rebuild video and the 2-3 clutches were done. Replaced all clutches and the pistons and it ran fine. Didn't even do a full rebuild.

I found your channel while looking at replacing the autoride shocks for my '05 Escalade. Sub'd and went back to the beginning of this Z71. I love these "old" Tahoe/Yukon/Esky's. I had a base '04 Tahoe I bought in '09 with 30k miles. Zero issues (other than the minor things) until it died at 190k when the oil pump went out 50 miles from the house. My ex wife drove it home after adding 2 quarts as she thought it was just low oil...not oil pressure. Should have kept it but it had rust and was the family vehicle. Bought an '07 fairly cheap. A complete dog that ended up totaled 4 years ago. But I bought that Escalade a year ago to tinker strictly because of my love for my original Tahoe. I firmly believe '06 was the last good year of them. They're fairly cheap now since they're 17+ years old. Not as cheap as you got this one. But they're damn good vehicles.
@Ryan-sl2oe5 жыл бұрын
I'd love to see the tahoe get fixed on. My dad's suburban has been through 2 transmissions and only ever towed a fishing boat on occasion. The real disaster was when his water pump shit out when he was driving over the continental divide. Not a cheap tow bill. Good luck with that chevy. I love those engines and hate those transmissions!!

I know EXACTLY how you feel when you said "It doesn't feel like a 200k mile truck." I bought a 2001 Tahoe with 260,000 for $2000 back in October of 2020. Original owner. Garage kept, no rust, tons of maintenance records. I took it for a test drive and was just shocked at how powerful and smooth it ran. I've put about 20,000 miles on it since and not a single problem. I took a gamble on it but I'm so happy with it. It was built at the Wisconsin factory and shipped to San Jose where the owner put 75,000 miles on it then moved to the Portland OR area so it's never seen any snow, ice, salt or freezing cold starts so maybe that had something to do with it. I always try to get a feel for the history of a used vehicle. Anyway, my question is: Have you ever drained the coolant drain plugs/bolts on the block. I'm doing a coolant flush and I've never done that before. Are they hard to get to? and what is the torque spec on those two bolts? Thanks!

Nice intro of NYC :-). Love that year Tahoe! I always wanted one but I ended up getting a TBSS. Which I absolutely loved. I had an extended warranty on it and just as expected, the trans went out at 20k miles. Sun gear and output shaft broke. The trans mechanic told me to upgrade those and the valve body because I would have the same problem at another 20k. Im glad I took his advice. I ended up trading it in for a brand new chevy cruze because of my work commute. :-(

Daily drive my 5.3 and it’s at the 230k mile mark and still drives perfectly fine motor last if you do regular maintenance. Only thing that I would recommend to keep in mind is the 4l60e is complete garbage I switch a corvette servo on my rebuilt tranny and it’s been running better than my tranny before but something to keep in mind

I got a 2001 Suburban with 223,000 on for $800, it needed a tranny. I also got a 89 Camaro. I'll post pics on my Instagram.
