I am an owner of a TI-89 from its initial release with rom version 1.00. I bought it when no one knew what it could do. I even covered the front display facia to just black so noone could see the model name. I also have a TI-89 classic hw rev2 in the blue and grey color scheme available in EU. I also had the original 81, the original 82 and original 83 before them. Anyway. The biggest difference between HW rev1 and rev2 from what I remember way back is that rev1 has the ability to display more grayscale levels whereas hw rev2 only allows for 4 levels of grey. This is why some rev1 game graphics did not work that well on rev2. So while rev2 is slightly faster, rev1 is better with graphics. But, it was many many years ago i player around with games on my Ti89.

I still wanna add the black 89T and silver 89 to my collection, but it's been impossible to acquire them as most sellers aren't willing to ship to the US. Rev2 also introduced the clock feature, which naturally came with some very useful time functions such as the timer, which I use to make little timed math games.

It cost me 600 CNY to buy a new TI-89T on Taobao. I am from China and graphical calculators are really expensive for me😢
