That is crazy to think that this Merc cost the equivalent of $260k in today's money and it's just a standard car, not even a special edition, Brabus or the rare S73 or S71 AMG model?! With the top of the line SL63 of today topping out at $175k, it shows how much of a premium these cars were back in the day. Considering KBB gives a Fair market value of $7851 which would be a 97% Depreciation on this car!! That's got to be some sort of record.

It is not quite a standard car. It is basically a roadster with a V12 engine. Which big manufacturer has that in their line up?
@gregphelps57386 ай бұрын
@@AntonovP To clarify, Standard in the model lineup. Although the V12 is the top of the range, they made 'special' models like the S73 and S71 models. You make a solid point though, only Jag made a V12 GT car that was less in price. All the other competitors (Ferrari, Lambo, Aston) Were as, or more expensive.
@AntonovP6 ай бұрын
@@gregphelps5738 actually, AMG made those models. BTW, Jaguar didn't have a roadster with a V12 engine. SL is a roadster, so, it is unique in that sense.
@gregphelps57386 ай бұрын
@@AntonovP Jag made the XJS with a V12 in Convertible (roadster) form until 96', I mentioned they were AMG in my original post, but they were still just standard Mercedes SL600s that were Modified by AMG, they didn't build them, in the way that Porsche Built the 300E for Mercedes for example. AMG was just an independent tuner until 99' when Benz took controlling interest, and then bought them outright in 05' and brought them in-house. Fun Fact: AMG also tuned other brands like Honda and Mitsubishi!
@AntonovP6 ай бұрын
@@gregphelps5738 Jaguar XJS is a grand tourer, not a roadster. XJS has 4 full seats, while SL is a 2+2 seat car, Mercedes-Benz calls it like, that, rear seats are practically not usable. Also, I simply corrected you, that "special" models were AMG made, not a Mercedes-Benz made. But, that is not important. My point is, that there is not a single big manufacturer who had a V12 roadster in their line up, and that is why Mercedes-Benz here shines.

I'm new to the channel, saw you on VinWiki and was pleasantly surprised you focus on millennial Mercedes! I can't wait to go back and watch all of your videos. My dream as a kid was to own an R129 and was fortunate enough to buy a 99 500 (Black, SL2, AMG wheels) a couple years back, a fantastic car it's been. No surprise the previous owner DD it a couple hours a day, it's so smooth and comfortable, the perfect highway cruiser. Not a focused car like a 911 or something but a car you would happily spend hours in. Maybe someday i'll find a 600 with the Pano Roof, what a magnificent spec! My one criticism in my 99 is the steering wheel, way too large.

That is a cool car!!! So is that interesting startup noise problem with cylinder activation? It seems all v12 mercs do that, i was thinkin engine is spun up first, so oil pressure starts climb, then start sparks and start spray fuel?
@DCMotorWerks8 ай бұрын
Cylinder deactivation is on the M137 motor. Only in 2000-2002 S and CL600’s. Then replaced by the M275 in 2003

These mercs do have cylinder deactivation and will run on one bank of 6 cylinders when cruising on the highway
@MDavidG13 ай бұрын
@@nelsonlopes3500 I own a 1998 SL600 like this one. I've have done a lot of research on them. I have never heard of this M120 V12 engine having cylinder deactivation.
@nelsonlopes35003 ай бұрын
@MDavidG1 these cars have 2 ECUs, each one controls a set of 6 cylinders. You can infact feel this activation kicking in if you have been cruising on the freeway (running on 6 cylinders) for some distance and now you want to accelerate. It is very subtle though . This is why an sl600 is more economical than a sl500 in long distance cruising. These cars also have 2 ratios of reverse gears depending if winter or standard is selected on the gearbox setting button. It will also pulloff in second gear(if going forwards now) unless you kick down off the line in winter mode. This is all to prevent loss of traction in snow situations.

v12 is very hard to work. That engine has a big problem with waking up. When just running around every other cylinder will fire. It is to get better fuel mileage. for some reason, it will not go back to running on all 12. You can go to the dealership and get them to shut it off. And spark plugs are $1800.You have a special tool to get to them.
@GNXClone8 ай бұрын
Wow, are the normally aspirated V12 that bad? I have a 2005 SL65 (R230), with the M275 V12 twin turbo. 24 (IFR6Q) plugs are $300. Still a lot, but not $1800. And it runs VERY smoothly. No special tools to access the plugs either, at least on the M275.
@DCMotorWerks8 ай бұрын
The M137 is more involved than the 275 even though they are similar. The big intake manifold on the NA cars main contributor to that. I imagine his $1800 includes labor.
