I drove a few back in the 70s , as worked for the local Austin dealer. The gear change was very "rubbery" as i remember.

Nothing short of incredible - congratulations! And credit to the previous owner for keeping her so tidy despite the lack of use.

What a wonderful surprise Alex! A companion for George. Alex from Alex Assets has Peggy, a two door, same year but a two door in a similar Colour. I agree, the hydrogas specialists are the best, this, George, need love. Now, a name for this Allegro; the only name I can think of is mine, Freddy! Old, a bit worn, not in bad shape. Congratulations Alex!

Great find! Apart from having four doors, quite identical to mine! You need these cars to be in a bright colour to stick out a bit in the traffic;) You’re quite right that old cars need to be used. Mine hasn’t, and have brakes etc all seized up etc. to show for it. Ought to be back on the roads soon though! Will follow your channel with even more interest now, if possible!

I keep getting shot down by my Ford friends when I say that I actually prefered the Allegro to the MK1 Escort. I am so old now that I remember when they first came out in 1973 - an Allegro 1100 deluxe was £900 pounds or so brand new! Those were the days!

Wow it's been 50 years. I was in my teens in 1973, so it makes me feel a little old in age now knowing that the,Austin Allegro is that old. I live in New Zealand and we assembled them here in the 1970s. They sold well although the Austin Maxi was more popular then. We didn't have the estate or Vanden Plas models here.

What an awesome find! Your starting to have quite an amazing collection of Allegros! I actually was looking at this car when it was for sale but didn't have anywhere safe to keep it, so I'm glad its gone to such a good home. Its a really solid example and by the looks of things it just needs some TLC. I've heard of the Allegro meet that is planned, looks like its going to be a big meet up! 👍😎

Subscribed. Bought back some memories there... learnt to drive in my Dad's late MkII 1300 Special, same colour as your latest acquisition. it was the 80's, 'Money was too tight to mention' and I was allowed by my dad to do the repairs to the family 'Allergic' including waterpump replacement etc. before I even started to drive! 1st car was an '73 M plate Austin 1100, gf at the time 1st car was a 76' P Morris Mini 1000 and now I have come full circle with a '06 R50 Mini Cooper. I get a lot of the '...it's not a real Mini' but I can certainly feel the DNA! Brother in Law's older brother had a Mk1 Allegro in a khaki green colour complete with 'quartic' steering wheel on a N plate... driving a 'quartic' steering wheel was something you tended to get used to fairly quickly...

Allegros dont have springs. Their suspension is Hydragas (gas and fluid), similar to the Citroens.

Congratulations on doubling your Allegro aggravation! I had a 1500 series 2 (1976) with a 5 speed gearbox in the late 80's, so I get the appeal - I loved the shape - beautiful from some (unusual) angles (e.g. looking upward at the front indicators) ... are you avoiding the E series engines, or have less survived (having a fuel filter on top of the engine may not have helped in this regard!)? You'll need to invest in extra supplies of teabags to calm you down between the wrath wrought by the rotten roads and the terrible torment of troublesome tinkering! All the best from the Surrey end of Hampshire to the Southerly end
@AllThingsAlex
@AllThingsAlex Жыл бұрын
Ha ha, thank you. Not trying to avoid any engine sizes, its just this example came up for sale and my thinking was that it would be handy to have another with the same engine incase of needing to borrow or swap parts. Also the A series is something I'm familiar with working on :)

To TOM WINCH Decent fellow sir! Someone who LIKES the Allegro's distinctive shape! Unlike today's lookalike cars, where the makers are trying to copy each other's designs, to poach customers away from rival makes!

Nicely done Alex! I must admit, I was looking forward to seeing your progress with your Minor and then your Ambassador, however, after obtaining my 1968 Morris 1000 with only 26,000 miles since new and about as straight as they come I understand the up/forward selling of cars to get the model and mileage you are after. Looking forward to further videos from New Zealand ;)

Thank you for your comments. Yes I think the Minor was far too much work for my budget. I'd considered keeping the Ambassador, but saving it from being scrapped was the priority. Its gone to a good friend and we will see it again :)

So happy this car has gone to a good home. Looks as I suspected when I first saw it for sale. A genuine solid car. 👌 Hope it polishes up well. The knocking DEFINITELY sounds like steering rack bush. Get bronze one fitted from Ed Kay. See you at Gaydon x

I need to investigate. It sounds horrendous. I thought it may be a top ball joint. If it is the rack I'll rebuild georges original one and fit that. In some ways that would be easier than doing a ball joint. I'd need to find one first for a start!

Lol. Don't worry. George is going nowhere. I'd never sell him. Idea is to have two so I can take the strain off him being the only car, have two tax exempt vehicles and in a tricky situation have interchangeable parts :)

Lovely! Always thought they were perfectly good cars. Dunno why they got the slating that they did? I think it was mainly driven by the media. Ditto the Marina. Nothing wrong with either of them. Enjoyed your video! 👍
@AllThingsAlex
@AllThingsAlex Жыл бұрын
Thank you. Yes they are nowhere near as bad as the media make out. No better or worse than anything else of the period really. It was British Leyland management that was largely blame. Most of the "I had an Allegro and the wheels fell off" are just fabricated tales and something lazy journalists still latch on to.
