Thanks for reminding me why I stopped buying Dell PCs and started building my own. Proprietary motherboards, proprietary power supplies (the connector looks standard, but the pinout is different), even proprietary fans (same thing - standard connector, different pinout). I'm on my second DIY build and very happy I chose to go that route.

Once I saw Vista sticker on the front, I knew there was very slim chance of it actually being a sandy bridge or ivy since those came out years after vista ( ivy bridge launched after vista stopped having support). The 3.6Ghz listed was also for the i5-660 too and not the i5-650

Surprised it had a Vista sticker to be honest. This was probably one of the very last machines to ship with it, either that or whoever bought it specifically ordered it with Vista for whatever reason. Also the 1st gen Core i-series stickers look different than any later generations, so you can immediately pick them out based on that.

I have brought a few of these home from the e-waste bin at work and two had the same symptoms. I was able to get one of them to turn on and boot fine by shorting the green PS_ON wire on the 24 pin to ground. It will force the power supply to come on and either fry something or work if as in my case the fault was something in the power on circuit. Not exactly a solution but I got to make the system boot before sending it back to e-waste bin.

G'day Greg, After the other fixables it is sad this one is Dead, but this is why I stay away from these different from Standard ATX/M-ATX SI PCs, unless they are free I really don't want to deal with Proprietry Parts. As you showed here Firstly it can be frustratingly hard to diagnose faults, Secondly it's hard to find replacements as it is generally the same problem that kills the others in the line & 3rd that limited availability increases replacement part prices.

Hi Greg, I've been supporting Dell PCs since before Windows. The 980 desktops are a weird edition in the Optiplex line. 980s along with the 780 USFF and very few of the 780 units introduced the new look that would become standard in the 390/790/990 series and beyond. The Optiplex 980 was positioned as higher end business targeted desktop. It offered more central management features and it was more expensive than the 780 desktops. The series was short-lived, and that role would eventually be assigned to the 990, 9010, and others through the years. As an example, the Optiplex generation just discontinued included the 3090/5090/7090 with the 7090 being the top offering. Back to the 980, as someone else mentioned, these models have a "reversed" BTX motherboard. The case and power supply are also unique to this unit and differ from the more common 780/990 series. Most people are unfamiliar with this particular series and based on the appearance, many think that they have a more modern unit. You could have a bought a similarly styled Optiplex (like a 7020 MT) and it would have an MTX motherboard and 4th or 5th gen CPU in it. In the last 30 years I've gone through more than 2000 Dell desktops. In all that time, I've only supported 4 or 5 of these. Since the main components like power supplies and motherboards were unique to these units, keeping spares on hand for them was a hassle and I took every opportunity to decommission and replace them with other more common (and newer) Optiplex models. Thank you for sharing your experiences I hope this helps. If you are looking for an even more rare Optiplex, just before the series was discontinued, very few 780 SFF units were made sporting the new "modern" look. In this case, since the eBay listing misstated the RAM on the unit, I would have used the "not as described" clause to get a refund. Best Regards, Rod

I'm no PC guru like some of my friend seem to think. But I do work on them and build them from time to time. It could be a preset defect in the motherboard. It has been a few years back, but there was a mother board by Dell who's motherboard would stop working after a set amount of time. I do not remember just what motherboard it was now, to long back for me. Some one who was a friend brought me their PC. The on board Video stop working and they got a GPU for it, and it would still not work, and hoped I could help. I looked it up online, and even found a chat group where there was some people who had come across this same problem for that same motherboard. It would seem that for that particular motherboard there was at lest 12 that had the same problem. I'm not saying Dell done it on purpose. But it would seen that after so many hours of use, something on that motherboard would just up and stop working and there was no easy way to fix it. I do have the skills to replace parts on a motherboard, I do some work with some soldering work from time to time and even have a Degree in Electrical engineering. How ever at the time, I did not feel it was worth my time to remove and replace the part and fix it that way. I used the GPU he had in deferent PCs and it worked fine. Then even tried other GPUs I had at the time, and never could get it to work. Lucky for my friend at the time. I work on many PC back then, and had a mother board I could put in his case and used his hard wear for the rest, like his hard drives, CPU, RAM, even the GPU he had. He used it for a few years, tell he had me build him a new Gaming PC back in 2021, that he use's now.

BTX was super popular around the late pentium 4 / Pentium D days. Mostly because they were trying to find a way to replace the ATX form factor and because of how hot the later Pentium 4 and Pentium D chips ran they felt the BTX form factor at the time would be better for airflow to keep the cpu's cooled. BTX cases are a pain to work with because parts are super hard to find for them and you're raelly limited what you can do with them.

Greg, Dell always makes proprietary hardware. This means that even if you get a regular ATX power supply, it may not work because they make it so you have to use their power supplies. I experience your pain as you do this, but maybe, you should try the original power supply or a DELL power supply for it. Don't worry, I used to work for them years ago.

As far as I remember dell power supplies have properitary wiring and even if replaced with a similar size and wattage they just won't work. In my computer lab in the 2000s plugging a non-dell supply into a Dell board would release the magic blue smoke. The board is probably fine you just need a working optiplex power supply

Swapped CPU and RAM, still nothing beyond standby. I assumed it was the MoBo and told the customer I could rip documents from their drive but thats about it. Fast forward a year or so after that, I tried using that same known working CPU I had swapped in to the computer a year back for troubleshooting. I was going to give someone an upgrade going from their i5 25xx to my i7 37xx ... Now my CPU didn't work. Learned a lesson that day. When a PSU goes out in a prebuilt and a new PSU doesn't fix it... Just stop... Do NOT throw parts at it unless they are disposable.

Greg, the blue jumper beneath (above) the CMOS battery, is that clear CMOS and if so is it in the on position preventing the system from posting?

Prices must be way out of whack over there with over here in the UK. Bought a fully working PC with fresh install of W10 for £30 and free postage only a few months ago for my brother. Only thing that it doesn't seem to detect is the optical drive. Had a Gen 2 i3 on an ASUS motherboard & 500gb HDD ... worked absolutely fine.

Amber led just means it gets power, nothing else, it works no matter what. I used to have a Dell and it was indestructible.

Buy a used HP 400/280 G1 MT PC, they use standard none proprietary parts, Haswell too. Maybe you can do a video on a case swap as well.

What brand/make/model is the portable monitor you use to plug into the machines you work on? I could not find it on your listing of studio gear.

That amber LED is probably just an indication that the board is recieving power since my optiplex 930 has one too and its alaways on when the PC has power connected

for anyone who isn't familiar, when the pentium 4s were getting so hot someone decided to modify the ATX form factor and moving the CPU to the front center of the case with a bigger hole to allow the coldest air in over the CPUs, Dell and other OEMs were the only ones to really adopt the standard for a few years but it never caught in custom building, then Core architecture came along and you had GPUs getting hot again around the nVidia 2x0 family if I remember (was socket 775 like 2006-7 when DDR3 was becoming a thing?)

Greg, there are so many board level repair youtubers. surely you could buddy up with one of them to further investigate board level failures. Your audience would appreciate the deeper dive and the other youtuber would get content to make. These guys can re-flash BIOS (mounted or unmounted) reflow CPU socket or GPU Socket or RAM to test for dry joint failures.... or perhaps get help a local repairer get a channel started to work with you on this sort of stuff.

Like I discussed later in the video, the sheer labor/effort that would go into a board this old and cheap isn't worth it :-/

@@GregSalazar True, I was thinking of maybe some of the more re-us able boards or GPU's you have replaced through fix and flop. Just food for thought.

Maybe you can see if the one of many electronic fixer KZbinrs wouldn't mind taking a deep dive into this motherboard and find out what's wrong with it. Might be worth a shot 🤷‍♀ I'd be interested in finding out.
