One of these appeared in my local garage in 2010. Almost had a middle-aged affair for metal. Silver grey, one owner, under £10k. Oooh! My wife pointed out that picking up her mother in a two seater was a bit silly. Did research whether she'd fit in the boot and I thought bent double she would. Reality kicked in, reverted to being 60 again and saw it disappear in a week. An example of real regret!

I have noticed that, and often understand where he's coming from. But this pile of crap i have no idea why anybody would want it. As the man himself said - very few left on the road, low miles, near 20 years old.....all the ingredients for a future classic to become a classic, and it's 1500 quid. Horrible looking car. I'd rather have a Duke and we all know how Matt feels about those! Really surprised he's got the time of day for something like this.

@9:34 They offered it with the Benz AMG supercharged 3.2 it was called the Crossfire SRT6 it had 330-350hp depends on who you asked! 0-60 in 4.9-5.1 secs and the quarter mile in 13.1-13.4 I think that’s plenty fast for a 20 year old car. That’s Corvette and Porsche territory of that day…. And with mods the car can be a 3.8 sec 0-60 car!

Thanks for the look-back. Never got this car. I owned an original 1996 SLK (2.0l supercharged) from new. By the time this car came out, the SLK version 2 was out in Europe at around the same price. The SLK was a hardtop convertible, this has a fixed roof. It clearly works for you and the low mileage and good bodywork is attractive. Good luck with the sale!

Hi Matt, I totally agree, this is a very interesting and rare car. I liked the Crossfire from the beginning and bought myself a roadster with 80.000 miles on the clock. Since then I enjoy every single trip in it. Those cars are underrated. But I don't care what Clarkson says, I love it.

Love this. I had a Crossfire Roadster from 2009 to 2012, one of less than 10 in The Netherlands. Totally impractical but such a fun car, guaranteed for thumbs-up of bypassers.

Assuming you can claim VAT back and taking into account recovery costs, I reckon you have a net pre-tax profit of around £800 on a 21 yr old car. Let's hope there aren't any warranty claims! On a more positive note, a great video with an interesting car...definitely not the usual KZbinr fodder....well done!

Just to add to this, there was always a bit of confusion in the past because some uprated halogen bulbs are filled with xenon gas to produce a whiter color temperature than standard halogen bulbs, Then they could market them as Xenon bulbs. Halogen bulbs produce light as a by produce of heat (the tungsten element gets white hot and produces light). HID Xenon bulbs (also filled with xenon gas) produce light from an arc of electricity that reacts with the xenon gas to produce an extremely bright white light. HID Xenons usually required a ballast/converter to fire up the bulb because it needs an extremely high voltage to initially produce the arc of electricity. Xenons always had that initial flash and them a brief warm up time of 5 seconds to come up to temperature/color. I guess now Xenons have been phased out by LEDs mostly as the headlight tech has gotten a lot better in the last decade.

March 2019 I bought, (and still have,) a 2002 Merc 320 CLK, (52K miles, (now 65.) Within about 3 weeks the crank position sensor went. I've also had the same thing go on my Citroen CX, so not just a Merc thing.

A very interesting and unconventional car, which is becoming very rare now. I clearly remember watching Jeremy Clarkson feeling very underwhelmed by this car in an episode of Too Gear. It doesn’t seem that long ago, but in fact, it is over two decades ago now, wow how time flies. This example is in amazing condition, improved by you Matt, I hope you get your asking price for it. Almost bought one while living in the US a few years back.. always did like the look.. a sort of Marmite design.. then sat in it, I'm only 6ft but my head was scraping the headlining, felt too claustrophobic.. If they'd offered the option of an exact copy but 20% larger it might have been more successful .. a sort of budget Panamera.

Perfect timing for this. I’ve recently been wondering what exactly is wrong with crossfires at this price point. Because some are priced around here and seemingly in the same condition (on paper) as other examples for 5k if this car comes good I might consider a cheap one but I predict you’re going to massively overspend.

I had a Crossfire and really liked it. Well built, quick (not fast in base trim) comfortable and stylish. Bad was the recirculating ball steering (steered like a truck compared to rivals with rack and pinion; cheap interior with brushed silver trim not holding up well. Some hard angles and plastics in the interior.

@ it rode pretty typically for a sports car, a bit stiff due to huge wheels. Altogether it was a quality product being a Mercedes of the 1990s underneath, but it also felt a little dated. The same weaknesses of the first gen SLK. To me it drove better than a first gen TT (turbo lag & Crusty ride) but was inferior to i6 Z3s and Boxster. More comfortable than an NA or NB Miata, nicer amenities like heated seats, better stereo, torque and acceleration. Headroom on the Crossfire is not the greatest, but the storage hatch is pretty useful.

I had a 54 plate in metallic blue - had it six years as a daily runner - it was a lovely car to drive most expensive thing was the rear tyres - other than that it was a solid run around - not very fast - lights are shocking and people always brought up the Clarkson quote - I also got the lower tax bracket at the time - but your better off getting an old TT

I ran one of these as a weekend car a few years back and rather liked it. Strong V6 and decent handling, manual gearbox a bit notchy but OK. Main downsides were poor rear visibility (I fitted parking sensors to mine) and the cost of some (Mercedes-derived) parts. I had to replace the steering box on mine and even though I sourced the part from the States the bill was well into four figures. I also had to repair the heated seats as the elements had failed, apparently a common fault.

These probably don’t have the image problem that SLKs have but metal folding roof and fully ULEZ compliant outside central London at least must make them a better buy. One for sale (private admittedly) near me - 57 reg and lower mileage for same money.

I remember Clarkson ragging on this for the design and the fact it was built on the last gen SLK platform (which was never that good) but it does look quite cool and retro in black, the wheels are the right size for the arches. Can totally see how this has become a future classic now and done full circle. Looks like you have a nice one!

I had one of these back in 2010 and oddly enough whilst also doing a house up. A BMW X5 went to be replaced by a cheap Crossfire for 5/6 months. I thought it’d be cheap American tat but grew quite fond of it. Good luck with the sale, cracking second car that especially for that money.

Oh my god thats so incorrect. Had an SLK230 and several mx5's. They are nothing alike. Like comparing cheese with a piano. Had two Crossfire's and they a much more raw than the SLK was. They drive differently.

Few years back I wanted a 2-seater with a bit of poke. I got my shortlist down to a Mercedes R171 SLK, Audi TT, Porsche Boxster and a Crossfire SRT6. The Crossfire was let down by the cabin which is a shame as it looked good externally and could move quite well. I ended up with a SLK350. Unfortunately the V6, 3500cc fitted to it suffered the timing gear fault. New part was around £100 but it was around 20 hours labour to do the work. I got rid.
